First I must state that I am computer based, AND have a player for customers cdgs.
Having said that, I agree with Jam about the hosts who are not using players also. The way I look at it is just as if you have a handicapped person situation. You make what is called a REASONABLE ACCOMODATION. Which is what Jam discribed. Maybe you have the same song in your library, or IF it can be purchased, you get it for the next time, OR if it's a SPECIAL CDG, you ask the (handicapped) person if they can give you a mp3+g file for addition to your library. These are 3 REASONABLE ACCOMODATIONS that as a business person you have offered. You can't possibly have the perfect solution for ALL of society's problems, BUT if you make some kind of effort, you're doing more than MOST.

My 2 cents.

Rosario

Rosario --good points-- Playing customer discs is just like all other aspects of the biz, If you play at a venue that REQUESTS all HIP HOP music , as a KJ you better get some quick if you want to keep the gig, BUT normally I am weak in hip hop in my library as I do not get a call for it, so If a singer comes in and wants the latest HIP HOP releases ..they won't find it....SORRY !

yes, I guess you could say that.

As much as it's the kj's ego that says "you can sing something else, can't you?"

Bottom line, I'm the spending customer, you're the KJ that's being PAID to keep your customers happy. If the customer ain't happy, then you aren't doing your job.

As I stated numerous times, count on me NOT to attend your show if you publicly state "I won't play customer discs!"

Ollie Ollie Ollie. Did you really think that you could pull the wool over my eyes when it comes to Sound Choice versions of Bruce Springsteen songs?

I DECIDED TO USE THE SECOND PAGE OF YOUR LIST TO ANALYZE IF THAT'S OKAY BECAUSE I HAVE MOST OF THE SONGS ON THE FIRST PAGE AS DO MOST OTHERS.

song 1) Blinded by the light...according to KJ Pro, only available on a Legends disc

song 2) Blood Brothers...Just released on Bruce's latest album about 2 weeks ago, the day after the Super Bowl I believe. Highly unlikely that is already on a Karaoke disc; even more unlikely that it would be on a Sound Choice disc.

songs 3 through 8) Many people have these but a couple of them are not available on Sound Choice discs as far as I know.

song 9) Darkness on The Edge....I have a version of this song and as far as I can tell, it is a homemade song that is pretty much available on some MIRC channels. If you have a Sound Choice version of it, please give me the disc number so I can buy it?

song 10) Dead Man Walkin'....As Far as I know, this track and a handful of other Springsteen songs are only available from a karaoke company called SBI Karaoke. I know this because I BOUGHT THEM ALL and put them in my MIRC Shared folder. Now I'm not saying that is how you got them, but I looked for them a long time before I decided to BUY THEM. No one else on the MIRC channel seemed interested in PURCHASING THEM so I took one for the team so to speak. You may have very well bought them as well so don't take offense.....Maybe one of your singers just gave them to you so you'd have them in case that person wanted to sing them at your show. I have no idea how you actually got them

song 11) Devils and Dust.... see song 9

song 12) Downbound Train....Please inform me as to where I can buy this one too.

songs 13-21) These are readily available but again, not all of them are available from Sound Choice to my knowledge.

song 22) Jungleland....see song 9

song 23) Leap of faith...Please inform me as to where I can buy this one too.

song 24) Living In The Future...Now this one is particularly interesting to me. You claim that all of your tracks except for a few are produced by Sound Choice. I believe that this track is only available on a Pocket Songs disc, #PSJT379. This is one of the tracks that I took the time to create a CDG file for because all of the songs on PSJT379 came with no graphics and were only audio with a black background on the screen when the song played.

song 25) Lonesome Day... Great song, and on SC

I think 25 songs is a good sampling. I'm not going to go through them all but there are a good handful of titles that you have in your list that I would love to get my hands on, in they are, in fact, karaoke tracks and not just mp3's of the songs. I'd like to get my hands on them, even if they were only mp3's if they were instrumental versions of the songs in question so please let me know where you bought them or found them?

Here's the list of your songs that I would love to find for myself:

ATLANTIC CITY, DEPORTEE, ONE STEP UP, 57 CHANNELS, ALL I'M THINKIN' ABOUT, ALL THAT HEAVEN WILL ALLOW, ALL THE WAY HOME, ROLL OF THE DICE, SAD EYES, SHE'S THE ONE, SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT(NOT THE MANFRED MANN VERSION), THIS HARD LAND, TRAPPED, YOUNGSTOWN, HOW CAN A POOR MAN STAND SUCH TIMES AND LIVE,

Maybe all of these songs are available from Sound Choice and I'm just out of the loop. Please help me out with any directions to point me to these songs so I can get to sing them.

you're talking about SUBJECTIVE terms. Subjective in the EYE of the BEHOLDER.

I HEAR YOU LOUD AND CLEAR, MATT.

Eric is beginning to remind me of a Jahova's witness who tries to convince an atheist that he should convert....or a meat eater trying to convince a vegetarian that he should eat meat.....or a democrat trying to convince a die hard republican the error of his ways.

Eric seems to believe that the karaoke Companies are all knowing and ALL karaoke singers should be satisfied with the songs that these karaoke companies deem sufficient to produce. I wish that Sound Choice or some other karaoke company would produce every song that I want to sing but that is not the case, for many reasons. Why should any singer be limited to only what the karaoke companies decide to produce??? I don't see a reason why I should NOT be able to sing a song that I want to sing, if I can produce it myself. Eric claims to not UNDERSTAND why a singer has to sing a particular song. There seem to be a lot of things that Eric doesn't understand about other people. SOME PEOPLE just LOVE MUSIC in a way that SOME other people will NEVER UNDERSTAND.

I can't speak for Matt but I don't like limitations on my FUN TIME. I want to sing what I want to sing. Thankfully, there are enough places around here that are happy to play my personal discs. I don't let a KJ , who refuses to play my discs, keep me from enjoying life. I just go down the road to the OTHER KJ who is happy to play my discs.

Confession: I break the speed limit too. I hope I'm not the only one.

Bruce,

I have only asked for a simple explanation that you are unable to provide and I guess that the English language is what is coming between us? And I'm sorry for that. And can only ascribed your misrepresentations of what I have been saying to a language problem. I wouldn't want to think that your misrepresentations of what I have said were malicious? Were they?

Meanwhile, here the gist of it all when it comes to BFFL

1. He has provided, I guess, every possible reason why he wants to sing his tracks
2 I did not, however, ever ask for any such explanation from him of why he does so
3. I have never suggested that he, or anybody, stop singing what they want to sing.
3. I have never suggested there is anything wrong with the songs he likes or the reasons his provided for liking them.

I simply have asked, over and over.... why can't he find a show that doesn't play cdg's that maybe has some of his preferred tracks and/or maybe has other tracks that he might enjoy? He doesn't have to go to that show every time he goes out. He doesn't even have to ever go back to that show. But why can't he allow himself to have a good time at a show that won't play CDG's? Oh.... sure.... he has stayed (but will never go back) at a few such shows, but clearly it was only begrudgingly and did not have a good time. I would think if he had had a good time he wouldn't make it a point to say he won't go back!

Now, he can twist my words and my intent all he likes, and he can dance around my question and get cutesy with it all he wants..... but it should be obvious to not just me, but everyone by now that he can't or will not provide any response, rational or otherwise, to that simple request I have made.

And I don't think others will be as gracious as I in suggesting that absence of his response and twisting of my words and intent is due simply to a language barrier?

Bruce on that search engine you have to use the karaoke filter or the DJ filter.

I dont have time for this but I got the ver. on my springsteen karaoke library and here is how it breaks down. UK refers to UK3103 I dont remember where I got it but it is not that bad.

Now if you are coming to my show fill out a song request on the site and I will check the availability. If you are at my show I will download if available. IF YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO PLAY A CD I will go home and get a player.

But I will not tolerate tantrums or allow disrespect to my customers singers or non singers. Respect is a two way street. I run a professional business and make business decisions for immediate or long range needs. When I get an extra $100 I want to buy a DVD laptop player that plays CDG'S. Until then I make do with what I have. If you cant respect that and work with me then stay away.

Gotta play custie's discs. PERIOD.

If you can't I may pop in to checkout your deal one time.

But I WON'T, I REPEAT WON'T be back(and I become a LOYAL long-term custie--and I'm talking for YEARS here, along with my friends that I would bring and their friends that they would bring.) which means MUCH LOST BIZ TO THE BAR OVER A LONG, LONG TIME FRAME-which the bar owner couldn't POSSIBLY be pleased with.

Loyal is not what I would consder someone who would abandon an otherwise good place because they didn't want to play with your toys.

All because the KJ wouldn't play a custie's CDG. Seems pretty silly huh?

Not any sillier than refusing to come back to place over this piddly point.

An prime example is a place called GRAMMA's that's just 2 blocks from my house-I'd walk to Karoaoke!!. I used to go there every other weekend as the KJ there played my discs. I've followed him around for years now from place to place and recommend ALL my karaoke-interested friends to go see him. The place recently changed KJ's so I stopped in to check the new guy. I asked if he could play my disc--he said his CDG drive on his lappy was broken. OK so I gave him the benefit of doubt and came back a couple months later. Same routine. So I gave up on him. Haven't been back in a year and a half. And this used to be my favorite place to hang for Karaoke. I still drop in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon once in awhile as the burgers are quite good. But no more Karaoke there. LOST LONG-TERM MONEY for them(and yes I do know the owner).

Granted, the KJ should not have lied about it, I would just tell you I don't play others CDG's. If you wanted to throw a hissy and leave, then have at it.

KJ's are there to MAKE THE BAR MONEY and KEEP AS MANY CUSTIES IN THE PLACE FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE(not just for one night but a LONG-TERM FOLLOWING FOR THE BAR).

Agreed, but if you think that you personally going to make or break a bar, you are quite mistaken.

"Oh its MY SHOW and I'll run it how I WANT". Well, that may be true to some extent---but its the bar owners bar THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO MAKE MONEY FOR. That's the MAIN PRIORITY. And if you're running custies off simply because of your own EGO(and lets call a spade a spade here--as this whole subject DOES BOIL DOWN TO KJ EGO) by not being willing to allow custies discs and MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY, then that bar owner has a REAL PROBLEM and you are COSTING HIM MONEY, LONG-TERM MONEY (and who knows how much that would add up to over time)

HA HA HA HA. That is about all I can say to that one. At my longest running show, I have had exactly two people ask me to play their CDG's, both of them still come every week.

There are MANY KJ's I've been going to see for YEARS now. They always are able to play my discs. I used to pop in on Matt's show regularly because he would play my discs because he simply didn't have my songs. If he did then I used his computer selections. I ALWAYS PREFER to use the KJ's selections so to save wear and tear on my discs. There are a number of KJ's here in Portland who can't, won't, aren't willing to, don't believe in it or whatever. Haven't been back to see ANY of them ONCE. NOT ONCE. Hence, those bars have lost my $$$ for all those YEARS and my guests, friends and reccomendations to other people who ask me where's a cool place to go see. More $$$ LOST.

Trivial amount of money in the grand scheme of things, I would say that not having whiney singing diva's disrupting the show probably saves or makes money for the bar.

C'mon, WAKE-UP. It's NOT HARD TO HOOK UP A SPARE CDG MACHINE, THREE WIRES AND A SWITCH. You don't even have to route it into your lappy/computer. just plug it into the mixer and the main video!! And the new cdg/dvd machines are inexpensive, lightweight and don't take up much room. Simple stuff!!

Unnecessary expense and room in the hauler.

I don't bring my discs because I want to SHOW-UP, belittle or humble the KJ or MAKE him play my discs. It's because they DON'T have my songs, or versions or labels and probably never will! Mine are ALL store-bought and I keep them in good physical shape. Sometimes I'm the only one with my own discs at the show. Other times other people also bring thier own.

And NO, 99% of KJ's out there DON'T have the obscure stuff I sing. If they DO then I'm like WOW!! JOY!! RAPTURE!! And then I go buy them a SHOT OF THIER FAVORITE LIQCOUR ON MY TAB!! They just won a LONG-TERM LOYAL CUSTIE who will return and WILL reccommend thier place to others!

Chances are, no one in the crowd want to hear your obscure songs.

To my mind there simply IS NO VALID EXCUSE OR REASON for not making provision for and allowing custie's own discs. Particularly if they are in good physical shape and are store-bought.

Fortunatley for us, you opinion carries little weight.

END OF DISCUSSION.Hardly

"Hardly"

Kurt's weight is worth Gold sometimes!

just sometimes!

As you so eloquently stated, you've not had the demand to bring the "unnecessary" weight and baggage.

There's a KJ who thinks that way around here too.

We just don't go to his shows.

and my venue gave him a standing ovation one night... again, your opinion is slanted but wrong.

If you don't want to go to a show that is all computerized DON'T

It's all about personally choice ....FOR GOD SAKES JUST GO TO A SHOW YOU LIKE if playing your disc is the MOST important factor in choosing which show you frequent. ARGUING for the sake of arguig is not fun :D :D :D

I have noticed language can be a problem, from time to time with others. I have understood and repeated what has been established as the pros and cons for KJ playing customer discs. And I need anyone to tell why as a KJ I should accommodate those customers --- I get it' I play discs! And I understand why people might prefer to use there discs.

So, I'll ask you, Matt, when and where did Bruce explain why he can't enjoy a show that doesn't play his discs? That's all I've asked. And now I must ask, where has my command of English failed me and allowed his answer to go unrecognized by me?

All I have heard him say is "wah" I want my discs! "wah" you don't want me as a customer if you won't play my discs, "wah"; I am a diehard Bruce Springsteen fan, "wah"; there is no reason why a KJ can't accommodate me, "boo hoo"

So where did he explain why he can't enjoy a show that won't play his discs? All I've heard is... because they won't play his discs, they don't care about his business, they don't want to spend a $100 to play his discs, he is a Bruce fan....

So, does that explain why he can't enjoy a show that won't play his discs and where did I miss his explanation?!@

AND LET'S ADD ONE LAST IMPORTANT FACTOR TO THE EQUATION - how many tracks will you actually be singing over the course of an evening 2, 3, or 4,,, and that is the basis for someone to say they can't be happy without their discs being played? There aren't four songs in thousands that might include your favorites, that you can enjoy singing?

Please.... who is BS'ing whom? Yep.... gotta be ego! And it is not the ego of the KJ that causes such conditions!

I am quite satisfied with my command of the English language, thank you very much, Eric. I have gone to numerous shows that will not or cannot play my discs and I have enjoyed myself at those shows because I can always find something to sing in any KJ's song book. HOWEVER, I have MORE FUN when I can sing the songs that I PREFER to sing. I enjoy vanilla ice cream and I like chocolate and strawberry too. That is why I buy the Neopolitan Ice cream container at the supermarket because I want to enjoy them ALL. Should I buy just plain vanilla ice cream because that is good enough for you, Eric??? I have gone to karaoke bars that will play my discs and I may sing a few of the songs from my discs and then I might pick something out of the KJ's song book later on in the evening if I have already sung the few new songs that I had planned on singing, before I left my house. I have often sung requests for people that were not on one of my custom discs, as long as I didn't have something already planned to sing. I'm not the type to sing every single request that I receive, especially on a night where it looks like I will only get to sing only once or twice. I'm more receptive to requests on a slow night where I will get many chances to sing.

You seem to lack the ability to UNDERSTAND the way anybody else thinks but I have lots of patience so I will try to create ONE MORE analogy in the hopes that you might finally GET IT!

I like Corvettes(Bruce Springsteen songs) and my favorite color is........mmmmm let's say Chartreuse(particular Bruce song NOT available on a commercial karaoke disc). Now General Motors(Sound Choice) makes lots of Corvettes(Springsteen songs) but they don't offer them in the color Chartreuse(Mary's Place). If I'm willing to pay someone to paint my Corvette Chartreuse(or make MARY'S PLACE myself) why shouldn't I be able to do it? ....The only reason being that it makes ME HAPPY? The RED CORVETTE makes me happy but the CHARTREUSE CORVETTE make me even happier. Why is it wrong , in your mind, for me to seek MORE happiness?

"All I have heard him say is "wah" I want my discs! "wah" you don't want me as a customer if you won't play my discs, "wah"; I am a diehard Bruce Springsteen fan, "wah"; there is no reason why a KJ can't accommodate me, "boo hoo" "

You know what Eric? I DO HAPPEN TO WANT THINGS MY WAY. If I'm paying for something, I expect to be satisfied when all is said and done.

When I order a PIZZA. I say "wah", I want it with thin crust, then I say "wah", I want it with pepperoni, then I say"wah", I want it with sausage too. Then I say "wah", I want it delivered to my house and then I say "wah", I want it to be hot when it gets here.

Then the PIZZA gets to my house and it has no pepperoni on it, no sausage on it and it's cold. That Pizza Parlor may WANT my business in the future but it certainly doesn't DESERVE it and won't be getting it..... JUST LIKE THE KJ WHO WON'T PLAY MY DISC. Sure, I can heat up the cold pizza and still enjoy it, but not as much as if it had gotten to my house the way that I ordered it over the phone in the first place.

I didn't represent any desire to understand anybody's food or automobile or song preferences.

I asked why someone couldn't enjoy a show where there discs couldn't be played... now we learn that one such person can in fact find things to enjoy at such a show.

phewww.... was that so hard?

I am quite curious about the "request" and "planned" thingys, but I am not going there...

You should look up the word analogy, Eric. You don't GET IT when I just talk about music so I thought you might GET IT if I talked about CARS or PIZZA. It's clear to me that you DON'T WANT TO GET IT. You just want to see yourself type so much that you will defend something that you, yourself don't even do.

I'll try to explain it for you. Eric. When I get new songs, I practice them until I think I sing them well enough to do so in public. I know I want to sing them that particular evening before I even leave my house. In other words, I am PLANNING to sing them that night before I would even consider singing anything else.

As far as requests go....believe it or not, some people actually like my singing and will ask me to sing certain songs on occasion, or a song by a particular artist that they may have heard me sing previously. If I have already sung the songs that I had PLANNED on singing(see above), then I will try to honor a request.

For me, sound is very important and being able to hear myself when I am singing. The crowd and atmosphere is important too. Where I live there are a bunch of dives and the majority of KJ's out here don't use good equipment or a fair rotation. There are a couple of places though where it is the whole package... good sound, fair rotation, nice KJ, and good venue. Those are the ones I go to on my time off. :)

I can have fun at a GOOD show.

I have MORE FUN when I get to sing WHAT I WANT.

Matt ((wondering why that's such a hard thing to grasp!))

Without the karaoke filter, your list was much larger. Anyway, you have 20 Springsteen songs on karaoke and I have 75 of them. Some of my favorites are not on your list. I appreciate the fact that you would try to play my discs if given fair warning that I was coming and that is all I can ask.

Like Karyoker said, let me know what songs you want to sing ahead of time and I'll try to get it if I don't have it already. I know I have jersey girl.
