The sign on the building reads "KARAOKE SATURDAY NIGHT" What are FAIR expectations of the KARAOKE SHOW when you walk thru the door ? This is WAY DIFFERANT than what are your personal MUSTS HAVES.

Is it fair to expect the KJ to have
CDG PLAYER
EXPENSIVE MICS
WIRELESS MICS
MONITOR
SUB-WOOFER
ALL YOUR FAVORITE OBSCURE SONGS.

I realize that a singer would choose a show over another one for some of the PERSONAL preferences above ..but does it make that show and KJ and less PROFFESIONAL if they don't have everything you wish for ?

As a KJ I offer the following:
GOOD SOUND
DECENT LIBRARY
CLEAN BOOKS W/SLIPS AND PENCILS
13"MONITOR FOR LYRICS FACING THE AUDIENCE
SHURE SM58 WIRED MIC
DECENT SOUNDING WIRELESS ALTERNATIVE FOR ROAMING
PERSONABLE AND FRIENDLY KJ

I am easy to please as a singer ! Just give me a decent sounding system and a few of my favorite songs and I'm HAPPY ....as long as the rotation is FAIR
Nothing ticks me off more than a grossly unfair rotation.

On the flip side as a KJ ... I wish I had a larger venue to play at, man the equipment and power I would love to buy ... more power, a sub , special effects , large LCD screen , dual rack mounted cdg player and some stage lighting. I would LOVE to be able to DAZZLE even the most critical singers ..... If

I would like to point out the distinction between a singer and a karaoke enthusiast. Singers don't need electricity nor an audience. So, as a singer I am not looking for a karaoke show. As a karaoke enthusiast I look for a show where the ladies are likely to flash the crowd and the beer is cheap.

CDG PLAYER: I bring my cds to all show but, if the kj can't play it, so what?

EXPENSIVE MICS: Just need a mic that is good enough for the system. A bad mic with an expansive and good system does not make sense. Like wise a good mic with a bad speaker will still sound bad.

WIRELESS MICS: i don't care for a wireless mic. Just give me an sm58 cabled

MONITOR: Needed only if the FOH speaker is too far front. Nice bonus when there is a set of mon.

SUB-WOOFER: If the main speaker is a pair of 12'', yes I expect it

ALL YOUR FAVORITE OBSCURE SONGS: I bring my discs.

I'm pretty much like you, Jian.

And like Tim -- all karaoke, no DJ.

surprise me

deliver a great show.... that's what I and my business partner strive for. If the host can't do that.... it'll be hard to get the utmost enjoyment out of the experience in spite of all the other elements.

Ideal..
Good and personable hosting
Good song selection

Hoped for...
Good equipment

Required:
fair rotation
good sound mix

What the KJ does to provide that experience I leave up to him/her.

Quick question. If the monitor faces the audience, what does the singer get?

There must be a different breed of karaoke out there that I've never seen. Around here, you just go there, pick your song and wait for your turn. I've never been at a show where people actually brought their own CD's.

Most of the time I've gone to a show or someone's had a KJ at their party, I've pretty much expected them NOT to have most of the rare stuff, but it's always a nice suprise when they do.

I think having enough mics is more important than if they are wireless or not. We get a lot of groups (4 or 5, sometimes more) people that want to go up and it can be a pain with just one mic.

I say let my children sing and do not saddle them with rituals or have to contend with rigid system requirements which in the long run makes them dependent upon crutches.

My children sing from the heart and do not need megawatts or or state of the art systems to add to their talent. Give us acoustics not synthesized crap. Learn these ways then speak of contemporary things. I grow weary of these arguments about watts and which mics and we must do this and we must do that. Do you people realize how radical you present thyself?

This forum is controlled by a few radicals and trolls It has nothing to do with promotion, positive suggestions, or advancement of karaoke. I would suggest you step back and look at the big picture and forget your ego or precious opinions for awhile.

Cabaret Karaoke

Cabaret in itself denotes song dance & comedy in that order. Our main format is karaoke but the theme can be modified into a full party mode at a moments notice. The ratio of karaoke to dance is determined by the needs of the crowd. We can provide a full service with any party theme or provide entertainment. For all your party needs please google cabaret karaoke

Let me try again

My expectation(s) when I GO TO A FAIR is to ride the imaginary karaoke ride!!

Nothing more, nothing less!

I sure hope that you sing better than you tell jokes. How 'bout putting up one of your favorite songs on the Singers Showcase, Eric. Most people with your outlook on karaoke tend to sound a "certain" way.

Maybe I am more forgiving than most of you, but I don't set my expectations as high for Karaoke shows I visit as I do for my own show.

The equipment isn't really that important to me, as long as it sounds good. Mics that sound good and not muffled, and a good mix of music and voice is important to me, that is about it.

I don't care if they are wireless or not, I don't mind getting up in front of people to sing. My own show uses only wired mics and forces people to get up from their drinks and "be a star" for a few minutes.

I don't care if it is a CDG or Computer system, as long as it works. If it is a CDG system, I do expect the host to be quick in changing the discs to keep the singers flowing and now waiting forever between songs.

And while I am on the subject, I *don't* bring my own CDGs. I try to find a song I can sing out of the book. I consider it a skill to be willing and able to sing any version of a song I know, without bringing my own favorite sound choice version. I know some manus have cheesy arrangements, but not being familiar with the particular version I am about to sing makes me more versatile.

My $.02.

Waht's the matter? Am I not allowed to get radical and sound like a fruitcake too?

I don't expect anything, except that there is Karaoke on Saturday night.

Going into an unknown is like a box of chocolates you never know what to expect.

The door swings both ways and I can always leave if I don't like it, and have done so in the past and probably will in the future.

Now when it comes to my show if I see people leaving I want to find out why and try to change it if possible.

Some things are impossible to change, like a bad bartender, wait staff, smell of the place etc.

I don't think IT's FAIR to expect things like expensive mic, customized pens, or even SUBWOOFERS to be present at a karaoke show.

Give me a decent host that's friendly and doesn't waste time with rotation or bad jokes and i'm happy as a clam.

And as long as SOUND is more FM than AM.

I DO THINK an audience monitor for lyrics SHOULD BE larger than 13 inches- unless you're in a very small bar. I used to get complaints about my 19 inch tv back in the day- now it's kinda standard HERE where i live to offer at least a 32 inch tv so everyone can see and follow along. Fortunately most venues allow you to plug into THEIR large lcds screens, so hauling one isn't an issue anymore.

Singer monitor- doesn't matter to me whether it's a 9" or larger, but as a kj, my older singers require a 15"-19" screen to be able to see display lyrics, such as pioneers.
