After last night out I'm going with sound. Everything else you can compensate for.

I returned a visit to another KJ whom I've known for years in her new venue. I told a few regulars about it last Saturday and seven showed along with myself. I heard her selection was a little thin so I brought some CDs for myself and them also.

It just about floored me when I walked in and saw that her sound system was a pair of Mackie 1530s and 1801s! :o And she was running them at levels I thought only I got away with. It was exhilarating to say the least to step up to the mic. Those things are so clean!

It was Tuesday so there were practically no other singers there. We sang as much as we wanted.

Crowd? We made our own. Selection? We brought ours. Personality of the host? We didn't care or notice really. For me it was a chance to actually talk to my group and sing some... things I rarely get to do as a host.

Without the karaoke filter, your list was much larger. Anyway, you have 20 Springsteen songs on karaoke and I have 75 of them. Some of my favorites are not on your list. I appreciate the fact that you would try to play my discs if given fair warning that I was coming and that is all I can ask.

With a whisk I could have that many too..But the ones I have were bought and paid for with social security money and what I earned at gigs. Youn speak of legalities yet you are one of those bragging about quantity. I proudly state that I have over 13 k karaoke and prune all the junk. Sir you might have a few springsteen that I dont have but the ones that I do have were purchased honestly.

Wow, Bill...what a thrill. Glad you got to enjoy that. To me the sound makes all the difference in the world. I can ignore a lot if when I get up and sing it gives me a thrill. WOOHOOO>..always wanted a set of those big boys. Maybe some day....though that will have to be put off for now as hubby's band (Dog Leg Preacher) just got invited back to the Buffalo Chip at Sturgis this year...

It was definitely fun Karen. These were permanent installs BTW owned by the club and meant mostly for their weekend bands. But wow what a sound!

Mcky57 ... If someone gave off the vibe in a rude and brash way, perhaps a show might not be successful. I maintain control and consistency with my stlye. Structure is important. I've worked gigs in two venues. One I've been at for close to three years. It's half the size of the other one, but always has a good show. I have license to thrill in this place, and people (some of whom would never walk into this 'dive') come to live the hype. I have many elements to my show and it works just fine. In the other place (that I stopped gigging at just before Christmas), the owner was there every show and stuck his nose in way too deep. It affected the vibe. His 'way' adversely affected business, my 'way' helped people have fun. He didn't deserve my 'way'.

If you have a choice of your way or the owners way, whose way do you think will work best? I think it's consensual here that most owners don't know shxt about the karaoke world, and if we left it to the singers, we'd be changing our rules with every one of them.

It's the KJ pros that know what's going to work in any particular venue, if that KJ cares about the owners and the singers, said KJs will accept input from both, but make the right choices based on the information at hand - that's what pros do.
