Seems that so many of their machines have problems with CDR's, they start fine but don't refresh properly and you end up with garbage on the screen. Now that everything Chartbuster issues is a CDR this presents a real problem, if you try to keep up to date with their new stuff. The three tray machines seem to handle them better than the single tray decks. Guess it's the karaoke version of Ford vs Chevy. . I use a Numark CDN-25+G player. Its a double tray, rack mounted unit. has a few extra goodies, like the key changer. I have owned mine for over 4 years. And never a hint of issues with karaoke. It will play regular cd's as well, but burned copies are sometimes an issue. But never an issue with CDG's. I paid $249 for mine new. You might be able to find one online for less though. Oh, and by the way, it's a professional grade player, not a cheapo Walmart gadget.

Mr Scott, I'm very interested in that unit. As far as key change, do you just push a button or do you do it with the jog wheels? How quickly does a song load? Can you describe how the unit operates in detail please? Thanks very much.

Stogie,
The keychanger is a slide, (up and down) according to whatever you wish. It will go up 16% if you want it,,,,did someone say "chipmunk"?? . The wheel helps to cue in songs a bit closer to the actual start of the music. It only takes about 3 seconds for a song to cue up, but if you already have it cued, then it intantly starts. Just wanna push pause until you are ready. I have read some revues on this particular machine, and they either hate it or love it...not much in between.
As far as how the unit works,,its pretty simple. It has two different parts to it, the control panel, and the 2 disc tray panel. I put my tray panel down into my rack, very top item. And the control panel with my mixing board. I own a pretty big rack, but it's not necessary, all you need is a 19" rack system of any kind. The controls are very easy to use. Go online to musiciansfriend.com and take a look.

Thanks Mr. Scott. One more question about the key change. When you slide it, does the +1, +2 etc. show in the display? How do you know if it has changed the key the amount that you want?

Knight,
I think a lot of it is the way the disk presents the graphics. If the page is cleared first and then the next page wiped on then there don't seem to be many problems (Sound Choice, DK). But if the graphics are just wiped on and off without a screen refresh the way Chartbuster, Disney and some of the other companies do it, you just end up with graphic on top of graphic until it's totally unreadable. First thing I do when I get a new disk is make a copy and put the original on the shelf. I'd put that virgin copy in a JVC and end up with junk on the screen, put the same disk in any other machine and it would look perfect. I'm not saying they're all bad but of the half dozen venues I've been to with JVC decks, only one with a three tray machine, didn't have problems with CDR's. Go figure
I went the binder route myself originally but it got to be too much hassle to rework everytime I got a couple new disks, they almost always belonged in the front so every disk had to be shifted back. Finally started using ProSleeves and hard cases, much easier to keep organized and haul around. These days the only time I use a binder is when I take a few disks with me to visit other venues.

Stogie,
Yep, the amount of change shows in the LCD window both up and down, doesn't matter. It shows up as a percent of change if I remember right, not sure on that one since I rarely use the player. I only use it when someone brings a disc in since I am computer based.

Stogie,
One more thing, I will check to see exactly what it does at my show tomorrow night, and will take a little more special note of what and how it shows.

So what percent is a half step? Most players change key in half steps.

Stogie,
Getting back to you on the percent thing. Ok, I paid attention last night, even though didn't actually need to use the player (nobody brought any of their discs). First of all, I have to tell you there is a button that switches from a max 8% to a max of 16% on the control panel. The slider will let you go anywhere in-between a full percent amount..example, if you want 1.45%, anywhere you want it. Seems like 1% is a full key. But don't quote me on that. All the controls are simple to use and self explanitory. I think you would be impressed with this machine.

I have been a faithful user of the JVC Triple Tray units and swear by their performance. I have one that is still going after 10 years and with regular maintenance it will probably work for another 5-6.
Matt is correct these machines are very serviceable and over the years have proven themselves virtually bulletproof. Of course there are exceptions to the rule but as a whole they are very good.
Once they stopped making them I was at a loss for what to buy so I just kept mine serviced regularly (cleaning, alignment, etc.) The multi-format machines appear to be ok but I have not ventured into that arena as I have been 100% digital for about 6 years now and only need players on two of my systems to play customers discs.

A slide keychanger? Are you sure it's digital keychange? It sounds more like a pitch control- a different item entirely...

Joe I was thinking the same thing especially when he was talking what looked to be percentages rather than sharps (+) and flats (-) my keyboard doesn't have the right icons. A step changer changes the keys by half steps, ie C, C+ or D-, D, D+ or E-, E, F, F+ or G-, G, G+ or A-, A, A+ or B-, B, then back to C. A slider seems more of a pitch changer ie slowing or speeding up the tempo.

I'm back to looking at dedicated Karaoke players. I saw a Numark Dual rack mount player on ebay, but it got bid way up. I'm just going to watch for an older Pioneer or JVC single tray player. If I watch the auctions I'll find one for a decent price eventually. I saw an Acesonic but that got bid up too. I can get a brand new Acesonic for around $150 I think and I may just get one if I get tired of looking. I wish the rack mounted DJ type CD players had the digital key change.

The old Pioneers can be very slow to load but ours reads people's ancient scratched discs when the JVC can't. A place in Washington state specializes in repairing the old Pioneers so it can be done. I'm guessing anything off EBay would be in need of a trip there soon and a reconditioning can cost around $275. We use the Pioneer as a backup and a JVC triple tray off EBay as the main player. We had a brand new Vocopro that just sits after being sent back to the factory 3 times so we went vintage until we find something more modern that we can trust.
