You left a karaoke show over popcorn, classic. The popcorn was free. Buy a sandwich next time.

The guy next to me wouldn't stop barking about the popcorn, even after I gave it ALL to him and it was beginning to escalate to the point of no return so I did the adult thing and went to a different karaoke bar 15 minutes away. It was getting to the point where I thought one of us was going to wind up in a hospital and one of us was going to wind up in jail. It was a lose, lose situation for everyone involved....and I usually order food there every time I go but this particular night the owner put a big bowl of buttered popcorn in front of me and I was enjoying it. If the popcorn incident hadn't happened, I would have ordered my normal food order later in the evening.
Glad you got a kick out of it, though. At my ADVANCED AGE, I go out to sing, eat and drink a few beers. I DON'T GO OUT LOOKING FOR A FIGHT. I'm 35 years past high school and that kind of high school behavior.
Croakdog, I would suggest you give a listen to a song called THE WINNER by Bobby Bare. It might teach you something about growing up and behaving like an adult when in a bar. I worked in bars for a lot of years and had to break up my share of brawls. Maybe that's why I avoid them now? SOMETIMES, EVEN WHEN YOU WIN, YOU LOSE SOMETHING.

Trust me pal, I've got plenty of experience avoiding conflict. I'm a manager of 16 in the corporate world during the day and turn into super karaoke host two nights a week. I've spent four years in the Corps and four more in college (drank my way through both). Even before turning 21 I was on the party scene. I can count twice the number of times I've been directly involved in a phyical confrontation - sober or drunk.
I sense danger like dogs sense earthquakes. Because of my corporate responsibilities, coming to work with a black eye or a missing tooth might not be the best bet, thus I've learned how to diffuse situations with a certain diplomatic adeptness.
I've jumped in the middle of a couple of fights at my shows, 'cause I don't appreciate or condone violence. That and the chicks dig the braun. Most times I see conflict on the rise (anywhere in the bar), I immediately summon the head bartender - whose job it is to take care of such things.
What I would suggest to you is that you neither blame the owner or the jerks who mooched your popcorn. Popcorn, peanuts, pretzels, etc. are common FREE bar food. People who have frequented enough establishments that serve these thirst inducers aren't typically going to ask if they can partake ... since they're under the impression that FREE means, um, FREE (take what you want). A couple of things you could have done (read take personal responsibility to avoid the conflict) are:
1) Take the bowl with you to the stage, so as not to entice/offend those left salivating over the unmanned morsels. Preserving your perceived rights to the bowl's contents.
2) Stuff the popcorn in your pockets, so it would truly be defined as a violation if someone had to reach down your pants to eat your popcorn.
Signed,
PAFFL (Pamela Anderson Fan For Life)!!!!!!!!

I don't know why I have trouble with this statement....

A lot of people think it's cute to quote what they had learned in Kindergarten. In fact, wasn't there a book that said everything I need to know I learned in Kindergarten?
Well, in Kindergarten we were taught to share....
Also, we were taught to avoid conflict and tell the teacher when a dispute pops up.
So, while the group who took BFFL's first bowl of popcorn forgot that they were suppose to share the bowl he correctly avoided a conflict and asked for another bowl.
However, when somebody dipped into the second bowl to share it with BFFL, he then became the one who forgot to share!
Personally, I don't want to share anything that's sitting unwrapped in a bowl at a public venue, and that is scooped out by people with their fingers/hands. Now when I say I don't want to share, I am not saying that I want it all for myself... I know that can't be - IT'S FOR THE PUBLIC. What I am saying is that I am very happy not to share it but rather give it all up. Everyone else is welcome to it all. I DON"T WANT TO SHARE

and You are entitled to YOUR thoughts and opinions JUST LIKE ANYONE ELSE, but forgive me for saying, you do come across more than a bit preachy here.. as to who is right and who is wrong and it should have been this way versus this person should have done that.
Thought this was a thread about pet peeves, not kindergarten lectures as to who was right or wrong? geesh, lighten up..

Perhaps that was my intent to lecture?
Perhaps, when one considers that the poster was peeved about sharing something known by all to be a public offering for all, the post becomes IRONIC?
Perhaps, when one considers how many postings were delivered by fellow members who went "Yuk", some may belief that the poster was saved from himself by deciding to leave before he had to partake in a public ritual of dipping and double dipping.
I dunno. I'm just wondering.
Oh, and Foxe, I don't need your permission to draw the conclusions I come to. They pop into my head all by themselves without yours, mine or anyones permission. And if you take exception with my post you have surely picked the wrong forum to participate in. While ours is more civil than most, what I posted is tame compared to some of what you will encounter as a participant! Particularly if you get on the wrong side of BFFL (op), wait till you encounter one of his lectures!

Did you miss this part of the original post Eric?
It wasn't long before the guy sitting next to me reached into my new bowl of popcorn instead of the bowl that he and his friends had helped themselves to while I was singing. I really didn't mind the first time he reached in but I did try to take popcorn from the opposite side of the bowl. Shortly there after the guy sitting next to me began coughing into his hands and then proceeded to reach for my newest bowl of popcorn and I stopped him because of his coughing into his hands.
I offered to pour half of my second bowl of popcorn into the bowl that he and his friends had already taken as their own. I didn't mind sharing my popcorn but I didn't want to share his germs. I ended up giving him all of the popcorn before I left.
READ THE ENTIRE POSTS, ERIC; not just the parts that you try to use to start a controversy.
WHY????? BECAUSE, That's why.

aww how sweet of you to worry about me ..
of course you don't need my permission, nothing in my post indicated you did..
and as far as "ours is more civil than most" forum remark, hon, I've been a member here for a wee bit longer than you, and I'm still here, so I guess you needn't worry yourself about what I know or don't know about the SS forums.
anyways.. back to "Pet Peeves anybody else" as was the topic..
I'm traveling today so I'm sure I'll have thought of a few after hopping a couple flights and sitting in airports..

Gas Heat: I stayed at a Motel 6 in Monterey, CA a couple years ago. When I checked in the desk clerk said, "I have to tell you we have no hot water. Somebody backed their car into the gas line." I wasn't in the mood to do more motel looking, so I took the room with a 10% discount. Now I was thinking the discount should have been higher--nobody in the motel the next morning had hot water, and this was a weekend night! And it was strange the next morning because usually you wake up to the sound of the shower running in the room next door, but that morning it was dead quiet, no running water, and all you could hear was the sound of cars peeling out of the parking lot. I took a cold shower. Burrrrr.
Pop corn: Perhaps the answer is to bring two bowls of popcorn, one for yourself and one for the vultures. My peeve with bar popcorn though is the fake butter they use. Give me the real thing!

Pet Peeves
I don't know what "pet" really denotes
And I am not sure how hot water heaters entered the discussion?
But... woke up this morning and found....no hot water
Now, am I more annoyed that I need to buy a new heater or that the "old" one is only 5-6 years old?
Or, am I even more P/O'd because just 3 weeks ago I replaced an A/C unit that I had replaced back in 2000?
Or, perhaps I am most peeved because with the way the economy is going do I want to be paying money for things I shouldn't really be dealing with? Such equipment is suppose to last a good deal longer than it did!
Of, course, popcorn is an important subject in the scheme of things. No?
