OK Long ago when I was just a singer although not oblligated to do do so these were my habits. After awhile I was friends with the KJ'S and showed up early and helped hauling in. I would set out books and help newbies. I did not destroy books or steal pencils or pens. I did not try to cheat on rotation or ask to be bumped. I had many requests to do songs and whether I had done them before or not I honered those requests and sang my heart out. I would sometimes clear a table and take the empties back to the bar. If the KJ needed tech assistance I was there. I cleaned the optics on the old pioneer players as well as the newer cdg players. If the coffee pot was MT I made coffee. These are just things I remember.
I did not do these things for favors or pay. I did them because I am an adult and to make a party work takes the cooperation of all. There are obligations from
management on down and to say the customers have no obligations is immature at best. I do not need the strict laws to affect my behaviour but rely upon the teachings of my father and his fathers for I am a Gentleman and a Man. Those are my obligations which I abide by and now that I have the expereince of hosting karaoke those obligations are many fold and I walk in as a fellow KJ and help as needed.
Back to the original question.. What are singers obligations? Ya know like dont destroy the books or abuse the the system..

Well at least I know what you are talking about now Ollie. This thread's been a puzzle to me for the last few days.
But my own thoughts are aligned more with Cueball's.

Bill Bar owners are an longer interested in trying to increase trade by a bunch of drunks trying to sing. That is a thing of the past. They want quality entertainment by a select few. That is what I offer and the singers I attract are very talented. I do not do this by purpose but the crowds do. To put it bluntly the singers at my shows must meet certain requirements. I no longer guage my success by the size of rotation but the quality of entertainment for that is where the money is.
It seems that this forum has been taken over by radical singers who expect hosts to cater to their every whim and get them up as much as possible. I'm sorry but I have a hundred screaming drunks to provide entertainment for. My singers have certain obligations for this is no longer high school but professional entertainment.
I was curious about singers feelings for obligations and it seems that there are none It is ME ME ME and to hell with everybody else... You do not sing at my shows...

Ollie
When one focuses upon singers who ascribed to themselves a level of unjustified importance... well I get what you're saying.
On the other hand... I don't go out to enjoy myself and then look for work... I am out to play.. so I wont' be helping the KJ or the management.
If optic lenses need to be cleaned, the KJ gets paid for his services. If coffee posts need to re-filled, ain't up to me...
Nonetheless, the tone of what you are suggesting regarding how people should behave... which is other than "ME, ME, ME" I well respect. If people acted differently, that poor temporary Walmart worker would not have be trampled to death during the Christmas Season out on Long Island, NY!

You should have seen the venue I as at last night... evidently, they didn't hear of this comment! The host sucked, the sound sucked, and yes, the singers SUCKED.
I sang one song on their crappy microphone, hearing the fuzzy distortion on their amped out blown speakers... didn't even recognize the sound of my own voice, as the treble was gone, and it was all midrange and bass coming out of the mic channel...
((I may never get over that experience!))

Rofl I just get tired of people wanting to argue with me about how to run my bisiness and want to apply their limited experince with a few bars while I have many in many vocations Again it turned into a thread about what my responsiibilites are
Since the the singers have no resonsibilites I formally request that this thread is dleted.

Matt at my venue you will be singing on a SM58wireless mic. It is inserted into DBX 266XL And a Lexicon 550 vocal processor. It is returned thru a Mackie CFX12 mixer and an Alesis Microverb4 further provides EFX. The sound is further processed by a BBE 362 and an Aphex104.. 2-4 JBL Eons are used for the mains and a JBL Eon10 G2 is used for the monitor. It is finely tuned for each venue. It is a system that i am very proud of and back down from nobody.

Here's one--The singer should try to fill out their slip legibly. It is one thing to have to look up the correct number but we got some last night that didn't even have the singer's name on them.
Where we used to sing before we moved, my boyfriend would often take out the trash for the barmaid or help lift the drunk off the host or whatever. Wasn't a singer's obligation but once you're a regular, helping out seems to come naturally.

Yay,
I'll second that. Singers have an obligation to submit a request slip that is both legible and complete.
