The friend that heckles you and yells when you're up to sing

"I don't care what you sing, you can't drive us out of here!"

or after you've sung you get back to your table and a minute later your friend looks over and says feigning ignorance, "Hey Drizzle, when are you going to sing?"

So then when it was his turn to sing, another friend of his said, "Hey Drizzle, want to go outside for a smoke." Of course they know I don't smoke, which make if even funnier.

Anyone else have any subtle, friendly jabs that they might occaissionally use on a karaoke buddy?

I wouldn't heckle anybody I didn't think could take it. I know sometimes I can't! LOL!

a friend of mine in Oregon would always start out the song by saying into the mic. "I've never EVER done this song before... ever!" to which all of us that were his buds would yell out "LIAR!!!!"

soon, a few of his buds were doing the same thing. It became a staple amongst all us dart throwers (and friends)! LOL

One of my nicknames (which I hated) was "mattman"... I even had an avatar on here that my friend Diane did through MSPAINT no less... anyway, I was singing "Kryptonite" one night when the phrase came up "don't want to be no Super-Hero..." and my buds all yelled out "MATT MANNNN!"

I like cracked up and couldn't keep singing.

Tig and his wife constantly tried to get me to laugh... it's pretty easy, and then I'm totally screwed for the performance.

I got my wife (before we got Married), was singing "Whole Lotta Rosie" and Diane (the aforementioned Avatar creator) whispered to her "wouldn't it be funny if he said 'Whole Lotta Ruthie'", so I DID and they both cracked up.

I also enjoy doing "silly" songs, so inevitablly there's a lot of laughing involved when I sing... oh wait, that's usually during the serious songs! Oh well, same thing!

When I sing I do not have hecklers. Request any song in the book and I will sing it.

When the KJ wishes the next --and really bad-- singer's song was already over, simply say to the singer:

"Wow! I'll bet this crowd just CAN'T WAIT to applaud for you!"

When someone sings a song and is purposely doing it badly, I'll say at the end:

"Go sit down and think about what you've done!"

When a song really sucks:

"That was unique!"

and the list goes on.... and on....

I like to try and make the bad singer feel special at the same time being a bit humorous...

"That was Wanted Dead Or Alive as only Sean can do it -- give it up!"

or

"Let's hear it for the one, the only, John Doe"

What is crazy is that often the crowd picks up on it and gives them a great round of applause. They usually end up sheepishly smiling, but being quick to put in their next song.

Not really a serious rib or nasty swipe, but at times I'll refer to the singer as, for example, "ladies & gentlemen, let's hear it for Jim's little brother, John Morrison," or "Kelly's little sister Kathy Clarkson," obviously depending on gender. Singers always get a kick out of it, especially if they are new to karaoke ... Come up with artist's name suitable for the song they just sang. Friends will usually rib the singer after that.

I don't usually poke fun or put singers down, even friends for some reason. I guess because I feel like others who may be new to the show would hear it and think it a bit over-the-top - now inside jokes now and then, that's different ... though again, I don't like to do that too much either because, again, new singers may feel cut out of the fun. If the room is full of regulars I am more likely to say something but for some reason I can't think of any putdown I would do.

...wow, I sound so serious about this ...

When we're hooked up to a big screen AND you've got the "better-than-thou" know-it-all singer, or just some guys sounding as bad as the possibly can, we play this video clip immediately following their song:

After all, this is about PUT DOWNS... not "helpful encouragement" for people who can't hold a note in a bucket.

It seems that quite a few KJ's have issues with singers that bring their own discs or practice at home. These "serious'' karaoke singers seem to get lumped into that group of people labeled as "divas" because they are constantly trying to improve their singing and these KJ's seem to think that karaoke is not to be taken seriously by singers. They seem to think that is all about going out and just winging it because if you practice your own songs and insist on singing them, you are some sort of prima donna who won't allow himself to be laughed AT.

To me, karaoke is like any other hobby that people enjoy but they are always striving to improve at. The bowler who averages 100 would love to average higher and even the bowler who averages 200 is always striving to improve. Your talent level doesn't determine whether you do or do not wish to get better. I think some singers know that they just don't sing well and they are convinced that they will never get any better so they are the ones that feel that practicing is just somethng that divas do. Those people are happy just to be up in front of people making fools of themselves, which is fine with me, but don't expect others who can sing well to feel the same way as they do. There is no need for me to practice songs that I have been singing for years but when I get a new song that I want to sing, I will practice it until I FEEL that it is ready to be sung in front of other people. Crashing and burning in front of a room full of people just isn't fun for me. I prefer applause to laughter. If I wanted laughter, I'd go to a comedy club on open mic night and give that a shot. I don't think that wanting to be good at something makes someone a diva. I think that it is the jealous  people who can't do something that are the ones that label people as divas.

Guess I should have withheld comment on this one. I'm not much for putting people down for any reason. (you know that ol' thing, what goes around comes around - they might be hosting someday when I'm singing! LOL)

A friend of mine (and someone who can take a joke) does a terrible
imitation of Johnny Cash. The other night after butchering "Ring Of Fire"
(as usual) I remarked, "Ya know Jeff, I think a little Preparation H would
take care of your ring of fire." The crowd erupted in a fit of laughter and
so did Jeff. He'll be back next week ;-)

Below are some others I use once in awhile:

"Our next singer is ahead of his time, so let's not make a big deal over a few minutes."

"Our next singer was stopped for speeding on his way here tonight. When he
told the officer where he was going and asked for a warning, the cop fired three
shots over his head."

"Our last singer was a war baby. His parents took one look at him and started fighting."

"Remember folks, I just call them up to sing - I don't guarantee them."

"Our next singer is with the City of ________ and his brother doesn't work either."

"Our next singer says that the best time of her life were the ten years between 29 and 30."

My wife and I are a KJ team. I never put down the singers, however I do occasionally make jokes at my own or my wife's expense like....

"Put in some more slips soon or you will be forced to listen to me sing another song!"

"Take advantage of the special tonight, a red headed slut, named after my wife and priced at only $4.50!"

I Do like Karen does and usually attach the last name of the artist to the person singing it, like "Let's hear it for Eric Humperdink or Yinto Presley- Elvis' japanese cousin!"

I 'll usually rib the OBVIOUSLY DRUNK singers after their songs by telling the crowd "NOW's A GOOD TIME TO REMIND ALL OF YOU TO DRINK RESPONSIBLY"- it usually gets a lot of laughs.

Someday after you have watched hundreds of singers that were encouraged to sing by hosts and then watched them blossom and improve over the years then you will realize how rediculous that statement is. I have thousands of dollars invested to bring out the best in everybody. I can take you to about any small bar in this area and you will hear damn good singers. It is no longer a bunch of drunks making a fool out of theirselves but polished singers.

As long as karaoke has the reputation of drunks trying to sing we will be scoffed at and the main reason that there has been no laws passed in our behalf. I have struggled for years to take it to a higher level and get the reputation that we deserve.

There are singers that dont belong on the stage but when I see that look in their eyes when they nail a song it is priceless and worth every bit of it. We take our karaoke very serious here but we do not regard it as a religion. It is a thing loved by singers and non singers alike. Anybody that takes mic in hand is respected and encouraged by everybody. To be honest with you I have only seen about one heckler and I think that it was the guy's wife.

My philosophy is that karaoke is like the Special Olympics. It's for the singer and not so much the audience. As such, I try to be as publicly encouraging as possible no matter how bad they sound. In private however, I have said things like:

"For having Downs Syndrome, they're pretty good!"
"He was the lead vocalist in the Deaf Children's Choir"
"If he plays his cards right, he can be the next William Hung."

When our buddy Cael gets up to sing, we always leave the karaoke booth and go outside to smoke.....but before we leave, we ALWAYS crack the mike and tell the crowd "If anyone has to take a dump, now would be a good time!"
