Which is exactly why I only update one entire book at a time, and date the cover. I hate "updates".... now I have to go through the main section and six sections of updates to find that its not listed, and I should have just asked to begin with.

As a singer if I do not see it in the book, I will assume it's not there. I don't bother asking a kj that won't bother to update their books - not saying entire books, but at least a supplement page. I like to see what is newly added as a singer, sometimes this is the only section I may use in a night.

I could tell you all day long that there aren't long lines waiting to use it, that yes, you can browse and all the stuff you'd like to hear, but I'll admit I'm biased. I've been using a kiosk for 4 years and I wouldn't go back to books for a club.

I was worried about everything you are and then realized after a very short time period that I was worried about something that never happened.

Then again, there are the diehard booklovers....

I am definitely in the kiosk camp. I used books and kiosks at the same time and the books gathered dust after about the third show at the same venue. Given a choice people would rather not write things down. Updating kiosks is free. If you use junk computers for kiosks and it gets broken, you just get another junk computer.

Invincion also has a kiosk but all it allows the singer to do is search the songlist. There was talk about doing something like what AUtoKDJ does but I don't think it went anywhere.

On the other hand, while I have have nothing against kiosks, I would never rely upon them entirely. They're great IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO SING. However, most of my singers want to take their time and browse through the books. Browsing a book is one of the top ways to get newbies up, since they have no idea what they may wish to sing. They may take a half hour or more.

You get someone hogging a kiosk like that the other singers get ticked, and the newbie feels pressured and intimidated. It's books in NJ by a wide margin.

Joe, that was my feeling exactly. As much as I'd like to get rid of sticky books, I can't see the kiosk being newbie friendly. I would like to try it, but would have to phase out the books....

Hmmmm. I guess you must have ASSumed that you could carry your AMP without dropping it????? That's what I call comic relief.

Actually, I didn't get the opportunity to carry it at all. I grabbed my speaker stands and the Amp just "jumped" out the back of my van, and bounced nicely on the pavement.

What was certainly more amusing was the rant and choice words I used in regards to my clumsiness.

I have the songfinder program its just a matter of taking the time & setting it up.
I had taken the demo with me and got good and not so good comments about it. I guess some are just die hard book fans...whatever... Hopefully I will have this program up and running soon

Yup, gonna be needing those Wet Wipes or alcohol for awhile....

Well it looks like one kiosk on wheels takes up alot more space than what our book box/tv stand takes up, then multiply it by 2,3,4, or more. As for updating, when it comes in it gets updated. Those who don't update (and all you really have to do is do an update sheet in the back of your books as they come) is plain laziness.

I can see where having some sort of electronic book or kiosk is a NOVELTY and a selling tool for some. But an old fashioned book will be NEEDED for most venues for some time to come. As time goes on I'm sure handheld electronic books that wireless put in song requests will be the norm ..BEAM ME UP SCOTTY

Remember the time when cdg player was the norm and computer based KJ was at its infancy? This thread remind me of that time.

I offer what I would personally like to see at a show. That includes books. I enjoy grabbing a book & browsing through pages, remembering songs. Maybe something reminds me of a particular song & will be able to look at my leisure, not have to go up, wait for a terminal, type in the name probably making sure to spell it correctly. I work on computers all day & don't want to have to do so in my fun time too. Give me a book to look through - especially for new songs. If I knew exactly what I wanted & sang the same songs everytime, then maybe a kiosk would be great, but for thinking up & looking for new songs, I want a book anytime.
I've been thinking about adding one just to see - but the touch screens (only way I would consider) I haven't been able to find one cheap enough - even though have been told they can be picked up for under $100. I have a couple older computers that could be used already.

I find the idea very interesting, and would like to try one out for awhile to see how it would fly in a venue. The future seems to be rapidly approaching.

Just remember when NASA was looking for an instrument that could withstand heat and frozen temperatures, could be used in a negative gravity situation and was correctible. They were going to give out a huge tender when someone handed them a pencil and said "This covers all the criteria".

Although I use a kiosk, I will never get rid of all my books. I MAY eventually print less, but that hasn't happened yet. What the kiosk HAS done is to free up a little more of my time because they can use the kiosk to actually enter songs into my hosting program, not just search to see what I have. It even automatically puts them in the correct slot in rotation!
Those that use it tend to be of the younger generation and they like it.
I prefer the books myself, which is why I won't give them up. I can't comprehend a time when books won't be used, but I'm sure that 50 years down the road that will be so.
