Hosts: Any particular karaoke songs you DREAD seeing on your signup sheet?

Singers (especially regulars): What song do you see come up on the big monitor and think "NO! Not this song!!!"???

As a karaoke host, I hate hate HATE "Paradise By The Dashboard Light". I've never seen it performed well, and even if I did, I'm at the point where the song itself drives me crazy. Doesn't help that it's 8 minutes long! HATE IT!

Another of our most common threads. PBTDL is one of the most hated to be sure.

I tend to hate most anything long that seems to be constantly butchered. We are lucky in that we *never* see PBTDL. (Don't tell our people about it, please.)

Of these lists built up over the years, I would have to say Picture may overall be the most hated. For me, Total Eclipse Of The Heart and Wanted Dead Or Alive are up there, because I hear them done so badly so often.

I would have to say the 8 minute version of American Pie. I have a couple versions of the song, and one of them is only 4 minutes, but it never fails, the people want every sigh and spoken comment in the song, so I have to pretty much stick with the 8 minute redundant version.

If I were you, I'd find the 8 minute version and simply take it out of my books and pretend you don't have that version. I'm *this* close to pulling PBTDL from my book heh heh

Picture I'll have to agree with. As far as Total Eclipse and Wanted Dead or Alive, those two haven't been that bad for me. When they are performed, they're usually not half bad. I guess I get lucky once in awhile.

Yeah, that's the thing you find when you come here. Things are regional and even vary from there. And they may even burn out. For instance, where the heck is Margaritaville? I don't think I have heard it for a year.

Here in Cincinnati area, we hear very little Neil Diamond (beyond Sweet Caroline). If you go to South Florida in some areas, it seems like it is every other song. In the Northeast, I heard PBTDL done several times (twice rather well).

"Picture" tops the list for me.

There was a KJ in RI that did PBTDL with his wife quite regularly and I have to admit that I didn't mind at all... because they did such a fantastic job of it. But "Picture"... I don't even like the original!

I hate just about any song that is over 7 minutes long........when the rotation is over ten people long......especially if the person can't sing his or her way out of a paper bag. The real topper is the KJ's who allow duets as a turn for only one person and then John and Sally sing PBTDL on John's turn and then follow that one up with Total Eclipse of the Heart on Sally's turn, during the final rotation of the evening, and I have to sit through it because I'm up after Sally and I'm singing a 3 minute long song.

Looooooong songs should be banned during the last hour of any show.IMHO

People ask me at shows this same question and I give them the same answer:

"I don't hate any song in particular AS LONG AS it's performed well. It's all the ones performed badly that I really hate."

Trouble is that in this business, you don't hear "performed well" as often as you hear "badly."

I'm about the same way. Chip! Well said. ANY groaner can be a relatively enjoyable experience when sang WELL.

One of my hated songs is "The Rose". I dont even like the original that much.

BUT one of my closest friends sings it, and sings it superbly. I still have it recorded on my computer.

I've heard groans when "Turn the Page" as queued up for me, and then surprised "wow!" comments when I started off. Some people even told me they were JUST about to go for a smoke break and then sat and enjoyed the song. I will often do other Bob Segar songs, because most just can't stand the butchering of that one song! Well, and add "Old Time Rock n Roll" to that!

"Picture" is yet another. Too many people try to just BUTCHER it when it comes to the part "I WAS OFF TO DRINK YOU AWAY!!" and it just RUINS the good duet.

People who can't sing a complex song just shouldn't unless they have practiced it at home a long time. But then again, many people don't take it as seriously as we do... so who am I to really biyatch about it?

OMG... Picture, closely followed by Whiskey Lullaby.

Yes, Wanted Dead or Alive ranks up there too.

I used to dread "Crazy" by Patsy Cline but since I've heard a few people do it well, I've had to quit campaigning for its removal.

Picture used to bore me but last week we had a new singer come in and she did a really good job on it. I told my boyfriend that I hadn't realized that song had a tune.

I agree with PBTDL and Picture, it always causes a skeptical look on my face. I used to hate Before He Cheats, too... but that song has cooled off, thanks god.

Another song, I roll my eyes (in my mind of course) is Love Shack.

After last night: "Paranoid Android" - Radiohead.

This one comes up once in a while. Each time I say to myself "Oh no not again."

I hate it when a singer comes in week after week and sings the same 3 songs and uses a request slip for each one. Can deal with any song except when done this way.

I would say it has to be "I will survive" by Gloria Gaynor. It just leads to a lot shouting and the women acting crazy. It is such a man hating song.

My boyfriend hates "I Will Survive" also but I don't think it is really man-hating. Just "you did me wrong and I can get along without you." I usually see it done mainly by females who have never sung karaoke before and they just got dumped and they feel they have to do it not just as a revenge thing but as a survive-the- terror confidence regaining rite of passage--hence all the group singing/encouragement/shouting. Rarely see it done as just part of someone's regular repertoire.

But then again, I am not overly fond of "Under My Thumb" which men seem to like........
