I've heard of bands having "followings", and yes some Djs and Kjs may have a "following", though I've always felt my job was just to entertain the people who had drug their a$$es to the bar, but I saw an add in the local paper today. It was looking for an experienced bartender, with a "following", and it sounded mandatory. Do bartenders have followings?.....seriously.....and JD, don't say "yes, they call them stalkers"

Yes, they have followings.. and yes, it's seconds away from being a stalker..

Many female bartenders have this problem/benefit..

Oh you just reminded me of something JD... years ago when I had my own apartment, I lived a few doors down from a girl that was a bartender, anyway 1 night she was walking Up the courtyard to her apartment door & was attacked, assaulted & raped... the guy threw her into the bushes & did it there & nobody heard a thing, it was even like 3am in the morning, ya think someone woulda heard something... I wasn't home myself that night. So I guess in a way u r right in what you said in a round bout way.

Sadly, that can happen.. even sadder, many gals are known to work the parking after shift.

(well, not at the better karaoke clubs)

This is a little off topic but I hope not much.

The manager of my band talked to a bar owner the other day about booking us into his place. His first question was about our "following".

I've been in this place a few times, enough anyway to recognize the regulars. They comprise nearly all of his crowd regardless of what band is playing. I'm not so sure that the owner is aware of that.

I don't know about other states but Wisconsin, where I live, has created very restrictive DUI laws that are vigorously enforced.

As the result, people don't travel when they are drinking the way they used to. Back in my early years it was nothing to drive 75 - 100 miles to see one's favorite band and to consume a fairly large quantity of beer in the process.

That doesn't happen today. People around here are concerned about driving any distance when they have had a drink or two. They tend to make their neighborhood bar their center of operations and they stay there.

Our manager could have answered that we have a large following but that it's scattered all over among the venues we play. We have a few fans who follow us around but even they have their limits as to how far they are willing to travel.

I've taken a long time to get to the point of this but here it is; I don't think it's unlikely that a bartender could have a following. It's just not likely that a bartender will have many people following from one job to another.

About 6 months ago a long-time bartender at a place on the north side of Milwaukee bought a bar about 10 miles away in a nearby suburb. By all accounts he was popular with the regulars where he worked. He didn't figure that he had to worry too much about impressing people in the new place because his crowd was going to follow him. He has a sort of strange personality and during his first days in business he explained this fact to some of the local people who came to give his bar a try-out.

Sadly, the crowd at his former employer's bar is the same as it was before. They didn't follow him. He never did catch on with the people at his new bar and they found somewhere else to go. A short time ago he had to close his doors.

Things may be different in other states.

Larry

I've never met a bartender I would follow.

Larry, it's the same here in Tennessee with bands, even before the stricter DUI laws. The bands around here can't draw the crowd or the following that karaoke does. Right now there is only one band that I would go out of town for and that's because their sound guy is a friend of mine.
