More money in private parties, but not as steady of work. If one could guarantee to be working every weekend with a PP, then you could theorhetically make more in a weekend doing 2 shows than you could in an entire week at a bar.
Bar work on the other hand is usually a fairly steady income.

I do both private parties and regular gigs. There is significantly more money in the private parties. The only problem is they are one-time shots, with occassional repeats. I try to keep a week night gig or two just to keep into it on a regular basis. Then keep weekends open for private gigs (most coming on Sat nights or Sun afternoon/evening). The couple regular gigs keeps your name out there and makes the contacts to get the private parties, etc.

I am into my 8th year as a KJ, and currently play 5 nights a week in the clubs. I started out with one set of equipment which was permanently set up doing club work 3 nights a week (still there). I have another rig just like it that I used to be mobile doing club work and parties. I now have that rig permanently set up in my other gig twice a week. Time is money, as is the work it saves. I don't have to load up, set up, play, break down, load up and unload the van, all I do is turn on and play. I bought a smaller third rig for private events and mobility, so I can take gigs during the day, afternoon or evening before going to my club jobs. Not having to set up equipment makes it easier to take outside jobs, not having to set up to play the club gigs.

I love parties, but they are not regular in occurrence or pay. Over time the club gigs pay more as they are week in week out guaranteed income. Both events are good, but as I am a full time KJ party pay would not be reliable income. For the part time KJ party income may be more attractive as a KJ would not have to put on a show and worry about attracting customers week in week out. Taking party work would also work into the schedule of someone who needs the time flexibility. With club work you are on whether you are sick well, etc.

My answer, there is more money over all in club work than private parties. On a per gig basis parties pay more over all they pay less than club work.

Debra, please use the standard font & color. Very hard to read.

I find that my older eyes have a harder time reading the standard size and font. I guess it is that eyes over you.

I love doing private parties and keep my weekends open for just that reason. The bar work is fine, but I like the diversity of birthdays, reunions, anniversaries, etc. - these are usually combination DJ/karaoke events and will often mix in games/contests. While most people will have fun in the bars, it can be a bit routine to me; the parties are always a bit hit with everyone. They also usually end a little earlier in the night which is also a plus in my book.

70% of our business is special events and private parties. 30% is club work. We work with over 28 talent buyers nationwide at the present time and annually are have booked in 11 states just for karaoke & corperate Audio/Visual. (not counting My personal shows & consultations)

We are not the usual show like most companies though.

I personally would rather have 3 CONSISTANT shows each week rather than just do private parties all the time because it's just that."consistant" I do DJ school dances, proms, weddingd etc, but I usually pay one of my DJ's to do them. I still end up making money off from the deal and if I happen to have a show that night, then it's just an added finencial bonus for me.
