Quick question. By the way I will be gone and won't be posting until next Friday. Then I have my first weekend paying gig and this is looking promising.

So, I have someone with a song slip, they sing, they leave, they don't have another song slip turned in. At what point do I take them out of the rotation? Remember I have compuhost which is showing my rotation at the bottom.

When I see them gather up their stuff & walk out the door, they are out of the rotation. They want to come back later, they are treated like a new person at that point.
If they don't leave & they don't put up another song & are still there, I still keep their spot, if it gets to their spot & they haven't brought me one up before that, then they wait another round until their spot comes up again - but usually if they haven't brought up a slip in a couple of rounds, then they are probably not going to sing again, but will still keep their spot available until I see them walk out the door, not taking up any time by holding it.

Everyone has a different thought. I subscribe to you sing one you bring one. If you dont have one in by the time I get back to you you are out of the rotation. You would be back in at the end of the rotation if you bring me after where your normal turn would have been.

If they don't give you a new slip? I wouldn't go out of my way to hold them a slot... BUT for some regs that have alcoholic amnesia, I've held their slot and then asked them when it was coming up if they still wanted to sing. You'd be amazed how many times they go "OH!" and hurridly write one up.

For someone that leaves??? well, I'd look for 'em, but chances are I'm just way too busy to keep the night going. If somone leaves and then comes back and wants to stay in tieir old slot, tell them "NEXT time, let me know, and I will!"

You can usually tell if someone is just going out for one of those things or if they are actually leaving. And if that was the case, i'd put them back in where they were if I took them out thinking they were leaving.

I inactivate singers that either don't have a song in if they ask for it or if they tell me they have to leave for a good reason( gotta pick up my girl and bring her here). I will delete if you leave but don't tell me you're coming back. Most that come back make it a point to let me know. If they don't tell me and come back they get treated as a new singer.

If they're gone, they're gone. If they're still there, I'll check with then two singers before them. They may have earlier brought up or thought they brought up a slip or heavens forbid, it got misplaced. It doesn't take up any time and saves you from looking like a jerk.

If they leave and come back, then they have to wait until the next rotation.

Unless they or someone else have told me they are gone, if they are there when their turn comes up, they can sing. I use the active/inactive feature, and I am proactive about querying people for songs. (I work very small places, and can usually just point my finger and get a song from them.)

Some of our singers dont care to sing every round. It depends whether it is a regular or a bar hopper. I sometimes announce on the mic so and so needs a request in, Have no set procedure but we do take care if our regs,

Some computerized hosts don't work with request slips, once you're in the rotation you get your turn. If you are not there when your name is called, then you lost your turn.

If there are mitigating circumstances as to why you didn't respond when your name was called (e.g. in bathroom) you'll likely be put back in as the next singer.

I've seen people leave show "A", go to show "B" down the street and sing there, then return to show "A" without losing their turn.

I do find it interesting that Lonman notices people who are leaving and is able to easily determine that they had departed for the evening. Personally, I would find that a lot harder to do than to notice the more repetitive actions of some regular singers that Lonman has suggested to me is virtually impossible for him to do!

Well when you see someone paying their tab, grabbing their coat & walking out the door, it's a safe assumption that they are gone for the evening. You start to know where your singers are after you've been doing it for a long time. You can pick up on if they are just walking out the door for a breath or leaving. May have to do with the room as well. I can see everyone in the karaoke side. If you are on the dart side, not so much but then they usually are not singing.

I use Compuhost and have it set to turn singers without songs inactive after they sing. When they put a song in I reactivate them. If the rotation is short (under 9 people) then I'll ask them for a song if I can see them. If the rotation is long like last night, 44 sings with songs in at peak, then the ones without songs simply get skipped unless they're regular regulars who I know want to sing.

If folks have a song in I'll call their name unless they came up to tell me goodbye for the evening. I'll give them about 15 seconds to get my attention ("Joe going once, Joe going twice, Joe come see me if you're still here") and then rotate them down to the bottom.

NOT EASY to notice all the customers coming and going all the time or to keep track of them while running a show with 2 exit doors!

sing one and bring one..or if they're a regular, announce between singers that if "John" wants to sings again, he's up in 2 songs and needs to put in a request now.

I always announce the next 3 singers as a heads-up so they can go to the bathroom, smoke, or give/change their song request.

I will allow people to put a song in and sing in their spot in the rotation up until the time I get to where there name would be. I never assume someone's left unless they tell me they're going. If they have a song in and I call them and they're not there when I call them, I delete the song. If they come back later, they have to be put in the rotation as a new singer (which could take an hour).

We have one bar where the bar owner tells us to keep everyone's place, and if they don't give us another song when it gets close to their time, we have to go find them and ask if they want to sing, and what. I don't mind. It's never crowded, so it's not an issue, and then the patrons feel special because you sought them out to sing for you. But this would never work in the busier places.

I try to do the "sing one bring one" thing but it's not a rule and people are free to communicate with me in whatever manner they choose. I admit it makes it more dificult to establish a rotation but I'm not there to make and impose rules on people. I'm there to make sure they have a good time. Being flexible seems to work for me.

Once a singer is in my rotation they are in it. If they come up and sing again, great. If not, well it's not a big deal. If the next person up in the rotation hasn't submitted a slip, I go on to the next singer who has.

If you're in the bathroom when it's time to sing I go on to the next singer and then come back to you when you've finished your business

I haven't had any complaints. You only have to come to one of my shows once to understand that if you want to sing, you sing. And you sing as much as you want. My only rule is that everyone waits his/her turn.

At the venue I played on Friday night the owner and I have a standing rule, I keep on going as long as I have singers who want to sing, regardless of when the gig is supposed to end. If I go over the nominal stop time he pays me extra. Friday night I went 90 minutes over my ususal stop time. I made extra money. The bar made extra money. All the singers got to sing everything they wanted to sing and we all walked away winners. What more could I ask for?

Once in a while someone wants to go out of turn and they always have a really good reason. It happened twice on Friday; both times with good friends. Both times I explained that there were a lot of people who were waiting patiently to sing and that I wanted to be fair to everybody. I also explained that I wouldn't be putting anybody ahead of them either. That made sense to both of them and they were okay with that.

One of them stayed later than he really wanted to and he wasn't quite as sharp as he probably wanted to be when he got to work on Saturday morning. But he made it through the day.

The other one plays is in a band that will be playing the same venue next Saturday night. I'm not working so I'll go to see them and during the course of the evening they will ask me to come up and play a few songs with them.

I guess I'm just lucky but for the most part I seem to be dealing with reasonble people.

Larry

understand too that Lonnie had a very expensive wireless walk out the door once.... ONCE! LOL!

I'm guessing that's a bit of how he's trained himself to watch constantly and be aware a bit more than the average Yogi!

Exactly! Sometimes people walk out the door to smoke a cigarette, or to pick up a friend and bring them back to the bar. There are so many people at my show, there's no way I would notice when someone left let alone when someone comes back. (Others who do this? How do you know if they've left for a few minutes or left for the night before you take them out of the rotation?)

Although I ask for "sing one, bring one" occasionally singers will have me 2-3 slips. Easy enough to manage...they sing and the rest of their songs go to the back of the pile. I only take someone out of the rotation when I call their name and they don't answer. I call their name three times within about 60-90 seconds then move on.

As far as blending in new singers with singers who gave me a couple of slips when they arrived early? My take is if someone is going to come early, they deserve that courtesy of maintaining their position.. (Some singers get there an hour before I start!) Now that's not to say after the rush, there might then be 20 singers until their next song, whereas earlier in the night there might have been 5.

Only when I'm sure they are gone. If I see them leave, if they tell me they're leaving, if the table they were at is empty and abandoned, or if I call their name and half the bar gives me the no-go/gone sign with their fingers across their throat.
