I currently have a newer sony drive cd-rw I think it # is crx230e Im not sure if that is the problem or if I need a certain program. When I look on the net I see all kinds of different programs and hardware but I always look for the best deal without getting junk. Ive seen ways to back it up that cost anywhere from 250 to 1500. any help would be great.

sony will not consistantly write the r-w codes for cdg's and is not supported by a lot of programs for backing up cdg's. You need to get a Plextor drive, either a cd drive or their new plextor 708a dvd/cd drive.
for software I recommend microstudio by MTU. It is cheap, and they also sell the drives. cdrwin will also copy and is the same price, but it doesnt work with multisession, which is what most are using now. microstudio will.

what is the difference in these two Plextor PX-708A (PX-708A/SW-BL) DVD±RW Burner and Plextor PX-708A (PX-708A/SW) DVD±RW Burner. Im no computer pro so when I searched for the plextor drive there were a few different options.

THE BL HAS A BLACK FRONT , AND THE SW IS WHITE OR IVORY. BOTH ARE THE SAME BURNER.
