Guys, I still need to rack my set up. Should I go standard or custome? I have the yamaha MG82XC. 15.5" Laptop. Will be getting a furman conditonaer. 1 L4 wireless mic receiver. 1 small mic receiver for my other wireless. All my cables. Would like to have my wireless mics attach to the unit somehow. I bought some nice heavy duty table mic stands at ace karaoke. I realize with a standard rack, they are probably useless. I also want to be able to store my mic cables in here as well as possibly songslips case, a small case with my harmonicas, batteries, small lights in it. It is very small, like a small lunch box. Also if I could put 4 1" binder books in it. Can't forget wheels.

There is a store near me called Karaoke Korner that will help me customize if I want. I know doodly about racks and rackmounts but after seeing my dj friend set up in 15 minutes and run his show from his rack, I'm sold.

Ive been there and done that .. Just be aware of the following when designing your RACK

Overall Weight
When on the floor is it the right height? When put on a standard table is it the right height? -- Are (2) seperate units better than 1 compete rack - maybe keeping your HEAVY POWERAMP seperate. Will the cables and connections be connected when closed ? If not are they simple to connect and dissconnect.

Your post lists what you will be getting. What do you have now? Powered mixer or power amp? What other rack mount items do you have? No need in designing or building a rack until you have all the components to put into it. Also, the size of your rack will also be determined by what kind of vehicle you have to transport it in.

Here's a description of what I use:

My table itself comes breaks down into three pieces. First the bottom with the wheels. Then the three sides about 36" high. It has three piano hinges, and folds into a "M" configuration that stores into the bottom piece. The top is just the table top 24X40. When it's all put together, it stands about 38" high. When it's all folded down, it's only about 8" high. It's all on wheels, and rolls in and out of the club easily. The space underneath will hold two 12" speakers and a small suitcase with the books, wires, etc... Almost everything (except speaker stands) rolls in with one trip.

The equipment box itself holds my powered mixer on the right side, and the laptop on the left. The wireless mic receicers are hidden inside. The video monitor is attached to the side of the box, so you don't need a monitor stand. This requires you to plug in everything everytime you set up. The box with the components in it is 12" high so that the computer is completely hidden while you work. Everything, table and rack is grey carpet covered. When you transport it, everything folds down to about 20" high.

BTW what type of hinge/hinges are you using on that M configuration; are they all piano hinges?

All three 30" piano hinges. I forgot to mention that I also drilled holes in the table top, and sides for wires to go through. When it's all set up, all the wires are hidden inside the table facade, and nothing shows except for the two speaker wires coming out from the bottom.

mckyj, where did you get the rack, I like it with the tabletop side and all?

Well, first of all, my rack also has the side table that is also the door for the front. You take off the door, then attach to the side and it becomes a table. It's common on many of the larger racks.

As for the monitor and stand. The monitor is a standard 17" LCD computer screen. I use a rackmount computer so it's an easy connection. The stand, I built it myself because I couldn't find one I wanted. It's made from a wood base with a carpet cover then attached a flat panel pole on to it. It works perfectly because I put my audio monitor, powered Fender speaker, on the stand and it keeps the stand from falling over.
