And CHIP, what is the point of your above post?

The point is that more often than not, (IMHO) KJ's these days use waaay too "overpowered" equipment. Like it's some sort of badge of courage or bragging rights. Their logic must be that if their systems are bigger and more powerful, somehow that makes them either "better" or "more professional."

There seems to be some sort of unspoken "my amps are bigger than your amps" competition going on. Ever notice that KJ's (even on this forum) never talk about making their "sound systems" smaller and more efficient? Sure, they talk about not carrying heavy cd's and converting to an easy-to-move and smaller laptop, but the speakers and amps just keep getting bigger.... and more powerful....

I think there is a distinction between "quality sound" and a "quantity of sound." I'm not saying that everyone can do their job effectively with an just Ipod, but you certainly don't need 2000 watts and a pair of B-52 subwoofers for the average club that seats 150 people even if it is "dance night."

We have installed jukeboxes with 75 and 100 watt amps.We did it with speaker placement and distributing sound with several speakers. An amp runs best at mid range and if you have to run it close to max you need to consider more watts or speaker placement. A speaker against the wall or next to the ceiling esp in a corner will put out 2-3 times the volume sitting in the middle of a room.

I dont judge bass by ear I sit down and see how far away I can feel it in my bones.

I am sure with smart speaker placement and a free reign on equipment you can do a lot of things. This is not possible in a lot of places.

I know that some of the jukebox installations I have seen have nice sound. But they have *lots* of speakers, not the typical two of a karaoke setup. And I am sure most of them have a subwoofer, too, nowadays.

Young people want the thump that hits 'em in the chest. You aren't going to get that with 100 watts to speakers on a stick. And if you want that kind of experience with any presence at all to the sound, instead of a din that removes all possibility of conversation, you need plenty of power to a 15" speaker.

I couldn't agree more.

Plus you're not going to get the lowest half octave of the bass guitar, even with 15s if they're in a two way cab in free air on a stick.

All you're going to get is harmonics. Those harmonics may may sound full, but you're missing the actual notes. As soon as you hook a sub into the system you can finally hear the whole frequency spectrum. Even if it's set fairly low it's very noticeable.

But if you're providing karaoke for younger singers you're not going to set your subs low. :P

Heck, I bring a small 15" sub even to my fairly quiet lodge gig. All I'm using for tops in there is Bose 802s, but I'd bring at least some kind of sub no matter what.

I was waiting for you to respond MckyJ before I threw myself into this thread again. :P

Then you should spend more time in the Tech forum giving advice there rather than picking an argument with a member here.

One more thing before this gets moved to technical. :P

I think the bum rap subs get for karaoke is that a lot of providers have their sub upper crossover point set too high. For karaoke I set mine at 60Hz! Way lower than where most bands and DJs set it.

This is to get them completely out of the way of the vocals, and to make sure there's no mud whatsoever to interfere with the singer's performance.

Some rooms I bump it up a bit, but for karaoke never over 70Hz.

I rarely get out to sing myself and I only read the 1st post made.

My crowds are all 21 to 30. I'm 30 myself.

When I sing, I don't go to older host shows, why?

Older people have lesser equipment they bought their setup 10 years ago and still thinks it works fine. Or they bought the minimal needed to get things started.

Older KJ's generally don't use subs.

Older Kj's generally don't run their system a loud a a good rock concert.

Older people generally go to older KJ's shows, If I wanted to hang with my parents I go over their house.

You can disagree with what happens in your locale based upon your experience Bill, but you cannot disagree with my experience. And as I suggested in my first post on this thread, let's not lose sight of how different, different parts of the country can be!

I pulled in twenty-somethings with my Fender Passport. And I don't pull in anymore of them with my 12" QSC's and my 18" sub! The mix I provide is the same and the fun and energy I help generate is the same!

You can't expect to pull more in overnight, it will take a little time for the word to get out.

Ouch Liquid..... When you say older, you may mean in their 70s? Hubby and I are probably what you consider older but we draw a consistently YOUNG crowd. Oh, btw, we upgrade equipment when we just can't live without the newer version of what we have...And yes, we use subs, and yes, we have up-to-the-minute stuff. INterestingly we not only draw the diaper crowd but can also easily draw the depends crowd....so there ya go. All generalizations are false...LOL.

And another btw, you may want to check the ages of some of the hosts on here who have run successul shows for 10 years plus --- many of them are probably decrepit old skeletons in your mind...but we've made a handsome living off this for a good many years, and often joke about being in an old folks home, rolling our system down the hall to the recreation room...doing karaoke in our 80s in exchange for room and board.... be very careful when you discuss age on here.
