All of those are sound pretty familiar.

Where I come from you don't put your brand on another man's cattle; or any of this other property either.

You've described a world that I think is pretty much gone . . . and the world is a lesser place for that.

What you said about stealing horses reminds me that while horse stealing ought to be a hanging offense there are times when there is a very fine line between stealing and borrowing. It's kind of important that you don't let the concept of punishing the thief get in the way of finding out whether the horse was stolen or borrowed.

I'd still rather do an honest day's work and get paid nothing but meals than just have somebody feed me. That kind of thing kind of offends my sense of self worth.

Larry

You can borry one of my horses any time. Just dont bring him home tired, hungry, glazed eyes, with a shoe missing, or still wet with lather. If you borry my saddle you will not lay it on the ground right side up and bending the flaps up. If a rail is not there lay it on its side to let the sweat air out.

If you borry me horse you will not let him stand at the rail with a tight cinch whilst you drink or make merry. (these movies drive me nus) You will never put him away wet. I am a cowboy lad!! i have never seen a mo.vie with the blanket and saddlle on the sidewalk the way it really was. It is BS.

Although I had a lot of issues with mental/physical abuse from my mother growing up, I was fortunate enough to have a father who balanced out the negativity she inflicted on me. He spent a lot of hours talking to me about life and about how to cope with things it throws in your path. Of course, I still had to live and make my own mistakes in order to learn for myself. I married at 20 to a man I'd been living with for 3 years prior, despite the fact he called me names and treated me like a dog - because I thought at that point he was the only man who'd ever want me. I stayed for over 10 years after being married, at first because I hoped he'd change... instead he just got worse.

Among the things I've learned along the way:

People don't really "change", they just become more who they are.
There is no such thing as "normal" - we all carry scars. It's how we deal with them that makes us who we are.
You don't carry grudges, grudges carry you.
Prejudice (of all kinds) cause more damage than any of the folks people carry them about.
Words cause more damage than any stick or stone does... even in anger, try and think before you speak.
Everything has its time and place. It's better to lose something for a while than to be a victim of bad timing and lose it for good.
Don't worry about if you're going to heaven or wherever you believe you will go when you die. Concentrate on what's around you while you're alive, that is what will make a difference in the world.
Never underestimate your effect on the life of a child.
Screw conformity, always be you.
Believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see.

Of course there are tons of things you learn in life... new stuff every day. My dad was kind enough to give me a start with open eyes and and open mind, and I try and apply it to my own life as best I can... and pass it on to my kids.

Dang, really? And I thought I was being a bit overbearing. You're easy J. (not... that kind of "easy", but, you know what I mean) Okay, life rules list# 2 coming your way.

(just hope it doesn't make you blush...)

That's a good set of rules there Lisa! Most people don't figure these things out until they're 50 or so, if ever. :)

Well, lets see if I can be "serious" for a minute or two, and quit spamming J's thread:)

I don't have any "famous quotes" I live by. My parents more or less just tried to instill in me and my siblings to stand up for what we believe in, no matter who may disagree with us. And I think I do. But throw on top of that a bit of stubborn pride, and I can cause a hell of an argument when I believe strongly in something:)

And they also taught us to give to those in need without expecting anything in return. We were pretty poor. Dad had a good job being foreman of a cattle ranch, mom sewed quilts and stuff for money... but we had 9 kids in the family, so there wasn't always a lot of "extras". We were a close family (still are), and we had each other, and we had our music we played. But, what material things we did have, we were taught to share with others if they needed it worse than we did. Dad would never pass up a broken down vehicle without stopping to help the people out (he is a very good mechanic), mom used fabric scraps to sew baby blankets for women who didn't have money to buy new ones.... and even if we were flat broke at the time, my parents would NEVER have taken money in return for something like that. Those kinds of life rules have taken me a lot farther in life than.... something like "money" would have.

In some ways I grew up too fast... in others not fast enough. When I left my ex, I crash learned life.... because I was suddenly faced with things I'd never dealt with before. I never really dated before him, I was only 16 when I moved in with him. I learned a lot in the last 5 years, and I'm still learning. The man I am with now has already been a great influence on my kids... he reminds me of my own father in many ways - I am hoping that some of him rubs off on my children as they grow.

I have many other rules I live by... but those are what sprung to mind immediately hehe. I should also add "Never pass up jumping in a puddle." ;)

haha, that's a good one. I'm a spontaneous sort of person who will do most anything on a whim just because the thought crossed my mind, and often do silly things that most adults would think they are "too grown up" to do. But, it keeps me young:) Jumping in puddles? Most definately.

My boyfriend (who I have nothing on in the goofy spontaneous department) took my kids and I to dinner on Saturday. We came outside and there was this very deep puddle just off the curb calling my name. I stomped in it as hard as I could ... got completely soaked lol. I realized at that moment how cold it actually was outside!

Haha, you're totally someone I'd hang out with:) I never could get along with prissy, uptight women who just don't "get" me... but you'd be fun to go karaoke, and puddle jumping, with:)

Yeah... I feel totally the same. You'd fit in well at our table at our karaoke joint... we've managed to round up several super cool/non prissy girls. You're on my facebook... you should check out the videos I have posted lol

Fiery, I just wanted to say that we have similar backgrounds and I really like the list of rules you’ve posted.

I suddenly feel like doing some puddle jumping. :)

I try to remember that I may not be responsible for the problem, but I am surely responsible for the solution.
