A challenging insult isn't going to garner an "only positive" response... at least not from me because I can't speak for anyone else. Besides, not all responses are guaranteed to be "positive." IMHO, if you're only looking for "positive" responses, then it appears you want some sort of "validation" and not discussion. There is a very big difference between CAN not and WILL not. It has nothing to do with being "naive about working with a bar and making your business work" or that there is "a lot to learn."
I, too, found this statement "interesting", Chip.
Not sure why he would only say that ONE person responded because if you read my first post in this thread, I DID respond to his "survey". Maybe he missed it because I had additional comments. Not sure. As for only POSITIVE statements, wouldn't that skew the results of the "survey"?
As for not know how to work with a bar, I use to RUN a bar and I am very well aware of how things work and I run my business VERY successfully.
I have absolutely no issues in this regard, save the one immigrant venue owner I have to work with. But that's more of a cultural/language barrier than anything.

And you wonder why a majority of people didn't post answers to your questions? If I had a dollar for every time you tell us all we have a lot to learn or are amateurs or have no business sense I could afford a new rack with all the best equipment. Your attitude is obnoxious and overbearing and I didn't feel compelled to post something that would simply give you an opportunity bloviate and tell us how wrong we're doing it. The people who answered are the ones you don't knock on a regular basis. You even managed to knock those who don't respond your call for answers.
If you're really out to help folks the real positive way to encourage discussion and learning is to post what *your* answers to those questions are and invite discourse on the subjects. Have a reasoned debate regarding it and at least let others see the other side of the glass. Telling everyone here how great you are and how much more everyone else needs to learn is tiresome at best.
I do applaud you, you even got me to post in the thread, something I hadn't planned on doing. I only read it to see what others answer. Looks like most folks think like me and that's why you're a bit light on replies.

I'm not going to get into the POLITICS of the discussion, that's not why I read, or post on this forum. Having said that, the venue that I play in IS a restaurant. I start just before the dinner kitchen closes. The DINNER kitchen closes at 10:00pm, and I start at 9:30pm. Hopefully there's not a conflict between the dinner costumers (too many) for me to set up. It is still a work in progress, and we are still figuring out ways for me to make the best TRANSITION from dining room to KARAOKE show. The kitchen stays open until my show is over at 1:30am for appetizers of all kinds. The bartender does her job, the waitstaff do their job, the owner is the main guy in the kitchen, and may have one other guy to help him. I advertise several times about the appetizers, drink specials, there is ALWAYS free chips and salsa. Together, we are trying to creat an atmosphere where people can come to drink, eat, sing, watch people sing, dance, and generally have a good time. If this answers the OP, it's all good.

I don't think it should rely completely on the bar to advertise, sure they should use their standard means - banners - usually can be made by liquor/beer distributors, plenty of free sites to go. I feel that as my own company I should do more advertising for myself to bring in customers for the shows I perform.

Oh Gosh I am sorry. The next time I will not spend thousands of dollars and brag about having the best system in town. I am an engineer and take pride in anything I do.
I started this thread with the best of intentions and you all hung back in the bushes ready to attack. you remind me of my girl friends daughter sitting across the table and showing no respect whatsoever and rolling her eyeballs.I am the best in what I do and if you do not believe it come to Greeley Colorado.I do have the best show and system in town or the state. If that bothers you then F&^&*k you..

Now Ollie, no need to get snippy about it and start with the foul language.
All we're saying is that while it works for you, your way may not be the ONLY way. You need to realize this.
You stated you wanted only POSITIVE statements. The truth is, we can't all give only positive statements. That's reality.
And you chose to ignore those of us that did respond completely, save one. Then you tarred us all with the same brush. Not exactly equitable, in my books.
What works for you in your area may not work for me in mine. We've been over this a thousand times in this forum. Accept us all for what works for us and don't try to force your way on someone else if they feel it won't work for them.
Time to live and let live.

Really mate you overestimate your power over anyone. Do you really feel like anyone planned to do anything to you? If so please get help. You having the best show/system in the state, nation, world or universe doesn't mean a hill of beans unless you're going to share the knowledge. Proclamations on how much you've spent or what type of engineer you are are fairly hollow. Go to any computer site and you can find 15 year old kids saying exactly what you're saying.
Lonnie or London Live are the perfect examples of people folks listen to because they're straightforward, provides answers and don't do the whole boasting thing. If you really want to help folks you might just assume their manners on it. I wish I had the restraint they have posting here.
I apologize to everyone for crossing swords with karyoker in this thread. This will be my last post on it. Karyoker , you can ping me on private if you need to tell me how much I should respect you like some karaoke god.

That doesn't bother me at all. The only thing that bothers me is your condescending attitude and that you insist on acting like a pompous *ss at the expense of everyone else here.
Is it beyond your comprehension to fathom the possibility that others here have also spent thousands of dollars on systems, have extensive knowledge in how to run sound, are fantastic hosts and understand what makes business work?
There's no reason to belittle others in order to try to elevate yourself. That is the act of a very insecure individual, and will not earn you any respect.
I'm not saying that I, or anybody else has nothing to learn from you, BUT you won't get anyone to listen by behaving like this.

"bothers me?" Nah.... But it is interesting that while you seem to have no problem blowing your OWN horn, I don't happen to see others willing to help you in your task... nor do I see them verifying that what you say is in fact, the truth.... Let's take Greeley, CO as a "for instance"..... Wikipedia re: Greeley, CO: Quote: According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 87,596. Here's my competitive area: Wikipedia re: Detroit, MI Quote: In 2007, Detroit ranked as the United States' eleventh most populous city, with 916,952 residents And you say you have "the best system in town?" Gee, considering your city is SMALLER than 10% the size of mine, that certainly makes it easier doesn't it? (OR does this mean that you have "the only" system in town? Certainly makes it a lot easier to substantiate that boast.) AND IN THE STATE? Wikipedia Re: MICHIGAN Quote: As of the July 1, 2008 population estimate, Michigan has an estimated population of 10,003,422, an increase of 64,930, or 0.7%, since the year 2000. Wikipedia re: COLORADO Quote: As of 2005, Colorado has an estimated population of 4,665,177, which is an increase of 63,356, or 1.4%, from the prior year and an increase of 363,162, or 8.4%, since the year 2000.
Let's see.... If I get out my engineering sliderule, that would indicate that your state's population is only about 46% what mine is.... So that would be that your CITY is less than 10% of mine and your state's population is only about 46% of mine.
I think you'd be an international rockstar if you lived in someplace like, let's see..... Delaware would be good....
You appear to be a single operator in a very small college-town sized place... feel free to boast all you like, I'm sure you're proud of your sideline hobby "mr. engineer" but keep in mind that a little humility will go a lot further.

We're doing six shows a week for the last seven years, and anywhere from 5-7 a week for the previous 11 years. Yup not successful because we didn't answer your questions.

Chip,
All you ever do since you come back and become active here is argue with people. That is what the majority of your post are. My advice to people with huge experience like you is, to help out in the Tech Forum. Don't waste your time arguing about petty and unimportant issue.
Most of us here know Karyoker enough to ignore his posts, but at least he does help a lot of new comers in the Tech Forum.

WHEW Thank you Jian. This forum is the most popular on the net because of the petty arguing and BS. We are a typical family that argues and spats. But put us together and we would stand together against any thing that threatened our love which is karaoke. I show no disrespect to anyone here esp the ladies. Whether drunk or sober I guarantee you will want me in your corner. If you cant stand the heat then stay out of the kitchen..

Please do not confuse pride with vanity. Music and karaoke in my later years is my life. I use it to supplement social security and from life long practises I do it to the best of my ability. I take pride in my shows and if I get drunk once in awhile and blow my horns and brag about it then laugh with me. I did not mean to put anybody down or show disrespect to any here. We share a love here and tend to get emotional at times and I do respect the strong opinions here even if I do not agree. It only shows me someone I would like to sing with for they sing with their heart.

Actually reading what he says every morning here in open forums is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine.
My advice to everyone is to read Ollie's musings as entertainment. As such they are pretty good!

Whatever.
It appears that when I have a disagreement - even if I'm expressing an opinion - you're quick to label me as argumentative. If I don't agree that you have to have eight millions watts of power for karaoke or dancing then I'm obviously "picking a fight" somewhere.
Yet, you're just as quick to defend karyoker when he says "F(&& You" to you and your entire forum membership because they didn't jump the instant the demanded them to; that's apparently "fun" for some reason. And it doesn't seem to matter at who's expense.
So let's just take your stance at acknowlegding everything Karyoker says as the gospel truth.... he MUST be the best in town and state because HE said so... Pardon me for asking that he substantiate his claims to fame, or put his money where is mouth is. Because he doesn't have to.... you'll be there to protect him.
I'm sure if someone questioned his judgement in the tech forum, they'd be wrong for daring to question his great authority and you'd be right there to defend and protect him again. Your current membership it appears, is free to verbally abuse anyone with foul language or to start some tirade against a new member; (case in point would be mckj57 argument with birdofsong where he ADMITTED he was simply "having a bit of fun", and you as a moderator, did NOTHING.)
But that's apparently perfectly acceptable here to dish out whatever you want for any reason, at any time.... but when it comes back to you, you get all bent out of shape.
Of course this is all just my opinion....
