Hi,
I'm finding some problems with my PC running a bit sluggishly. There are loads of programs advertised that claim to make big improvements.
Anybody tried them? And are there a few that appear genuine, and, at least, won't do any harm?
Ian

I doubt there are any that are good in that regard.

Most systems that run slow have a configuration problem. Either too much software runs on startup -- disable it all or remove programs you don't need. Or the one that I see cause the most grief -- scheduled anti-virus runs that begin as you come out of hibernation. The cure for that is to do a weekly run manually, and turn off the auto-scheduling.:w

Personally - I distrust any of these "wizard based" apps to keep a computer supposedly "healthy".

My karaoke laptop has the apps on it that it needs. I do not put anything on it that's not been tested elsewhere. Moreover, it NEVER see's the Internet.

THAT is how I keep a computer clean.

Now, assuming damage has already been done to your install... Run a GOOD virus scanner, run a GOOD malware scanner. Delete temporary files (use the disk cleanup). Defrag (for what it's worth). Use MSCONFIG to stop unneeded apps at startup...

Thanks, I use the machine to stream Karaoke from Sing To The World, and upload to Singers Showcase, so Internet connection is necessary, but I will check out the links suggested, and continue to try and keep it running "lean and mean"
Thank you for your help.
Ian

You run your show entirely streamed? Wow!

OK, ensure you have good protection on that :)

Of course you can use software that will improve...

First, you should run this software on a regular based:
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Secondly, you should defrag your drive on a regular based:
http://www.defraggler.com/

And finally, remove those Spyware:
http://www.superantispyware.com/?tag=GO ... NTISPYWARE

All of the above programs are FREE

And most important, you SHOULD use Firefox along with some add on and NOT IE when surfing the net, THAT will help keep your system clean and safe
