been looking into the compressors and from here there seems to be alot of positve to DBX 266xl,166xl and so on and on other forums ive seen some slating them and that the behringer mdx4600 is actually better. just a bit confused and not trying to say that you guys dont know your thing.
ive also come across another that is available at the min for £200 but it will go up about 283.352 US dollars. Klark Teknik DN504 quad comp ,anyone know much about this unit please.

Which forums, never heard that stated on any 'pro' sound forum i've frequented. The Behringer will work, but not great, you want a quality compressor, yes the dbx for the price is probably your best bet.
If you can get the Klark Technic for under $300 SNATCH IT! It retails for around $1200-1600 new. Yes it will blow the dbx away.

http://www.blue-room.org.uk/index.php?s ... =dbx+266xl
so the kt504 unit would be totally suitable for karaoke. not shour i will be lucky enough to get at that price as it has about 10 hours to go but no bids as yet.

Yeah that doesn't convince me of anything. I've owned both & know what I kept & what I GAVE away. Sounds like the few in that thread are like the few here that diss the Mackie & JBL names as being overpriced as well.

Lonman what the main differance between the dbx 266xl and the dbx 166xl is the 166xl worth paying the extra for and the 1046 is a quad but does it have as much control as the other two?

The 266 is more of a basic compressor only. The 166 also has a peak limiter built in which is nice because you can set it so even if the screamers get through the compression, the limiter will not allow their volume to go any higher.
The 1046 quad is actually a much better compressor (with limiter) than either of those, it's based on the 1066 2 channel - another very good unit. The quad controls four mics as opposed to 2.

Because you can set a compressor to be a limiter only with hard settings, but then lose the compression ability. This is better for a main output for speaker protection, but not as effective as a good compressor with a separate limiter built in.
