The tax check came and the tax check went. Once the dust settled I had upgraded my equipment and added more than originally planned.

The Peavey 115Dl was replaced with Mackie SRM450's

The Yamaha MG12/4 board was replaced with a MW 12/4CX

Driverack PA was purchased

Audix OM2 mics are now front and center

The P2500S is in bridge mode pushing a Peavey 18" sub

IMO the sound is really good.


I do have a couple questions about my new equipment.

I play music through Itunes. I have changed the audio output on my computer to USB but the sound comes out of the computer speakers. When I play songs in windows media the sound is routed correctly through the USb to the mixer. Any ideas how to route Itunes through the USB?

When doing auto EQ on the Driverack PA with the RTA mic the test completes and says Auto EQ not done. Any ideas why this is?

The last question may seem stupid but here it goes. This new equipment, especially the mics, are so clear that an average singer actually seems worse than they did on my old equipment. Any mixing or effects suggestion's you may have to help these singer's sound better.

It would be my guess that you probably just need to raise the "Pink Noise" level during the procedure. I've done several rooms and have only run into trouble when the level was set to low, even when using the "precision high" setting.

You might want to try using "Response Curve C" when you are pinking the room. This may help relieve the "sterile" sound you are apparently getting. If it still sounds to clean to you try cutting you highs a bit and maybe play with your frequencies 315hz thru around 600hz. The lower frequencies will bring out the depth of your sound and add some warmth to the mix. Experiment with it, that's what basements are for. I've never EQ'd Mackie speakers so I can't be specific with numbers. Others on here use them, perhaps they can help there.

Just to confirm my set up is right I figured I would ask a dumb question. Since the Mackie's are powered and biamped and I am running the sub in mono I have a 2X5 set up. Is that correct?

If Jim isn't back yet, I should be able to answer that. No, you want a 2x3 setup because the crossover in your bi-amped power speakers is done in the speaker itself. This is confirmed by it only having one input connector -- there is no place for two outputs from the DriveRack to go to it. 2x5 is typically used when you have non-powered bi-amped speakers using three amps -- one for the highs (one channel for each spaker), one for the mids (one channel for each speaker) and one for the sub (usually bridged).

If I remember right you are running the SRM450's, do you use a custom setting on your DBX or do you use one of the factory installed speaker's that emulate the 450's?

Nope, not running them. I run a pair of Yorkville YX215s, or Peavey PR-Sub/PR-10, or Behringer B1520, or Tapco TH-18/Thump combo. None of those are in the presets, so I use custom.

No, like Mike mentioned a 2X5 would not be appropriate for what you are doing. The proper setup would be a 2 way or a 3 way depending on if you are running stereo tops or mono tops. Your going to want to use one of the "User Spaces" and do a custom configuration. I don't know if you noticed or not, but there is more in depth explanations on the DRPA on the DBX site. I know they are intimidating at first but with a little practice you'll soon figure out what everything does. Feel free to ask any questions.
