I am buying a new Mackie PPM1008 1600W power mixer. Which 15" 2way speakers would you buy and why? I want to stomp my competition in sound Quality. I'm thinking about Mackie's passive S215's

If your goal is to "stomp your competition in sound quality" then you might want to rethink your power source to start with. I don't find the Mackie PMP1008 specifications to be to intimidating. Especially if your going to use S215 speakers with it as they are rated at 8 ohms. I think you will find you are short on power.
(Both channels loaded and driven at 1 kHz.)
Peak output power @ 4 Ω: 2 x 800 W peak
Average output power @ 4 Ω: 2 x 400 W rms, 1% THD
2 x 500 W rms, 3% THD
Average output power @ 8 Ω: 2 x 250 W rms, 1% THD

The compitition will literally be running three times more clean, stable power than you would have. They also would have a much nicer mixer and very competent speakers as well. They would have done all this and only spent less than 100 dollars more than you did. Probably even less with some smart shopping. By the way the specs on the Yamaha Amplifier are:

This is just one alternative, I was going by the mixer you chose had eight mic pre amps, built in fx and I think compression. There are many other choices out there.

You may not have enough power to drive the ZX5 but in case you feel like upgrading your amp

I have a pair of the electrovoice speakers with peavey pv-2600 amp.
I also have a pair of peavey sp2x's with peavey pv-2600 amp.

My Favorite are the yorkville nx55b speakers, 550 watts per speaker with the amp built in, and are lighter and have better sound than either of the other setups.

Anyone use Yamaha speakers? Pros/Cons on the BR or V series?

Barry -- I used a pair of Yamaha SV115 for a few years and I would say they are considered by many to be a work horse and a GREAT Mobile KJ /DJ speaker.
For the money one of the BEST BUYS ...if there was such a category in Pro Audio.

I don't think you could find 2 KJ/DJ/Musicians to say something negative about them !

The BR series is a lower or entry level grade of speaker

Micky my friend and now fellow Allen Heath user, obviously there are better speakers, better amps, better mixers. I was trying to keep the price at roughly what OP was already intending on spending to give them an idea of bang for the buck. Hooking EV ZX5's up to a Mackie PPM1008 is kind of like putting leather interior in a Chevy Vega. (my apologies to any leather interior clad Vega owners out there) We know you love your EV's and we all know I love my Yorkvilles, but neither one fits the situation. Besides when the OP mentioned "stomping their competition" we know they weren't talking about us.

I'm a Yorkville fan myself, I wouldn't trade my U15P's for nothing, well within reason.

As jamkaraoke mentioned they are just a good cost effective workhorse type speaker. You could get by with the BR if all you did was small venue's but for the price difference the added power rating and the peace of mind that goes with it, I would go with the S***V series.

The Yamaha S115V are very good sounding speakers. The problem is they are REALLY heavy. You're going to spend more, but your back will thank you with the Electro Voice Zx or Sx series. Peavey Impulse are work horses too and lighter than plywood or particle board speakers. I've been reading a lot of good comments about FBT and RCF speakers.

QSC is coming out with some compact, powered speakers in a few months that have had some great comments when they had their debut recently in front of an audience of DJs. I own Electro Voice and I think it would be hard to find better sounding, better quality speakers. I've read MANY positive comments about all Yorkville products too.

I used the Yamahas, and they are awesome. They also weigh frickin' 61lbs! I'm now using the Eon 315 POWERED speakers which weight 35lbs, and they sound as good if not better then my yamahas.

So, not only are they lighter (Which IS a factor to consider if you're mobile), but my rack is light too as I was able to take out my amp!

That setup would kick serious booty. You would be the envy of many, but I don't know if that amp has quite enough juice to provide adequate headroom. Those speakers can handle a couple hundred people easily or more depending on the room.

Those speakers are rated 600/1200/2400 so ideally you would want an amp that can dissipate at least 1200 watts per channel @ 8 ohms. the Yamaha puts out 700 watts per channel which is certainly respectable and can drive those speakers, but more power would be better. It also will allow you to add a subwoofer later from the same amp if you should need it.

Amp.......Still shopping???

That amp would be more than adequate if he bridges it to both speakers and not run in stereo or dual mono mode.

The P7000s is more than enough amp for those speakers. It'll throw out 1600 watts a side at 20ms bursts and not clip.

I have that amp and it has all kinds of headroom above it's RMS rating.

OK, I admit it, I really love my EV But, I did try the Yorkville NX55 and loved them, very generous bass and also very flat response but where I tested my EV, they didn't have Yorkville, these 2 brands are usually not sold in the same store, what I was told...

It's kind funny seeing the Canadian guy promoting EV, an American brand and an American guy promoting Yorkville, a Canadian brand Well, I guess there's no more frontier

You are right, nice reading out there about RCF but since Loud Technologies (Mackie) loss the company, yes, the Italian's bought it back... it has not been the same Loud Tech has hurt them and they are probably still making the best driver on the market but their own brand is not so much recommended anymore...

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the high end speakers at Yorkville are using RCF drivers, so no surprise they are good But, I too believe EV has the best sounding speakers overall with the ZX series, but I wouldn't mind having a nice pair of NX55
