And what you Timberlea can't get into YOUR thick skull is that I had, as a singer, been witness to new, fledgling shows that failed because of freeloaders. And since you insist management would have to know of such circumstances, what did they do for the karaoke shows involved other than fire the KJ?
And it would be a bad decision on the part of a KJ starting a new show to believe as, Diafel does, that a KJ should be intimidated by management's reaction to how freeloaders are dealt with. Why? Because any KJ who would decide to take matters into his/her hands would do so realizing that if they didn't do so that they would lose the gig anyway under the SPECIFIC circumstances that I KEEP describing! And it is likely that the KJ would do a better job of responding than would management.
So here's the point where most posters should find themselves, in retrospect:
a) you subscribe to concocted, hypothetical scenarios to justify ignoring freeloaders
b) these FICTITIOUS scenarios being presented and embraced are MORE important to consider than ACTUAL, EXACT and REAL circumstances that have been experienced by a singing member of this forum who, along with others, left a fledgling show because of freeloaders. And consider as well that Lonman suggested he's too preoccupied as a singer to be concerned with who is and isn't spending. Ironically, Lonman's mindset in this regard doesn't change the fact that under the worst of circumstances freeloaders can and have caused the demise of several new shows
c) while initially, argumentative sorts focused on and simply excused freeloaders, a majority of posters now suggest that that the problem should be left to management, although my specific details reveal how management did nothing to save the jobs for the kjs involved
And while I, as a KJ, have as yet had to deal with freeloaders or the likes of BFFL, I will give myself primary responsibility to deal with such problems, just as Topher suggested he did in the post he made two years ago. And, again, that post noted how he was prevailed upon by the staff, who didn't go to the owner, to resolve the problem of freeloaders
I have found it most interesting to learn that with time even more theories have been developed as to why it is best to ignore freeloaders, now including the admonition that the problem must be handled by management. Tell all of those reasons to the kj's who have lost jobs because of freeloaders. Tell those reasons to the kjs who have been closed out of venues that once had karaoke but now want nothing to do with it because management has come to realize, after several tries, that karaoke can bring in freeloaders.
And while most of you have indicated that you have no experience with freeloaders or that they are not a problem for YOU, you disregard the facts I have provided and compare me to a "conspiracy theorist". Who amongst us is working on theories? Me, or posts like these, of which there have been, probably, 75 or more over the last two years?

Let me try to describe a scenario where management might not mind some freeloaders at their venue. A group of people show up at a karaoke bar looking for a good time but they walk in the front door and the place seems like a ghost town so they turn around and go to a different karaoke bar hoping to find a place with some people in it. They get to their second choice and the bar is pretty crowded with a bunch of freeloaders that are singing up a storm and having a blast. They decide to stay because the freeloaders have created an air of fun in the bar that would otherwise be just like the first bar that they walked out of. The bar NOW has some SPENDERS because the freeloaders made the bar look like it was a fun place to be at instead of a ghost town. Bottom line is that warm bodies will attract more warm bodies.

Out of the 17 years i've been running karaoke - 7 nights a week & no not always in my club, I have never once experienced a one loner non-spender ever come into a show that didn't eventually make friends with the groups that were in there. However if I did, it still would not be my place to tell them anything, it would be managements.
I have used the previous quote because it has a subtle theory included -- the theory that if a freeloader socializes with others, he/she is no longer a problem. Meanwhile, I have clearly noted in my scenarios how the freeloaders socialize with most of the other attendees where they go. Nonetheless, they are still a problem.
While I have provided everyone with food for thought, many of you reject that there is a single thing to think about --- there's apparently nothing to consider or reconsider. None of you could never possibly run into a KJ who will have to deal with what I have described. So let none of you be confused by the facts... consider only your theories or lack of experience with said facts.
So, be as pigheaded as you want. You have your experience and refuse to accept that they may be more to the world of karaoke than what you have experienced. And you do so in spite of the fact that others, though admittedly relatively few, have concurred with what I have suggested can happen.
If it can happen to one KJ, if it can happen to two KJ's; if it can happen to three KJ's.... why can't it someday happen to a KJ you know?
I'll conclude with this recent post, it says much about closed mindedness of many, unlike the open mindedness of the following poster:

I get the impression that the "spirit" of the topic got lost somewhere , mixed up in all the personalities. "freeloaders" as been called should only be a concern to a KJ if he/she starts to see the "freeloader" effect the quality of the show.

There are hundreds of reasons why someone might be at karaoke night not spending money . AGAIN ...If mgt doesn't mind ....I don't care either
But seriously........ Are there really owners/managers that want or approve of someone sitting in the bar all night not spending money ?????? (excluding any special circumstances ).
