Interesting that you used the word "WHEN" and not the word "IF". Everyone will make the occasional mistake but it seems that you know that you will intentionally make "exceptions" for certain people and you don't want to be called on them.

No it's a recognition the rules are going to get bent and broken on occasion. Using the word "If" seems to indicate you believe the rules you have cover all instances. Using the word "When" indicates I know they're going to be broken.

I don't know where you get the "exceptions for certain people" thing, it's "exceptions for unforeseen circumstances". The person is very rarely the reason, the circumstance is. Had a regular singer just get shipped off to Iraq. Yes I did let him sing more than his fair share the night of his going away party. No one "called me on it" because I told folks what was going on.

Yeah I break the rules, I do so with the full knowledge on how the crowd will accept it.

As I do every format from the conventional karaoke common here to formal weddings, our rules change with the situation. Even at our regular venues they change with the size of rotation, type of crowd, ratio of listeners to singers, age of the crowd, ideas and wishes of the owner and management and many other factors. I have done wild parties where there are no rules other than dont abuse the equipment.

I could not possibly have printed rules in the books.

I hate to say this but ...ooooo. if I offend anyone by having rules then what......these people that attend our karaoke show are suppose to be adults..but then there are those who have not grown up yet and need to be "SPANKED "...Although I have rules and inforce them to the max doesnt mean i like it but common sense tells me that there are those that need rules..therefore I put my foot down

You're right. I don't have rules, I have guidelines that I run the show by. People have fun so why change it?

I have mine printed on the first page with the schedule of gigs. I call them "tips".

KARAOKE TIPS:

• Please fill out the slip completely, and include your first name and last initial

• "Stage Names" are fine, but please continue to use the same one all night so the rotation of singers can flow smoothly. Trying to trick the KJ may result in a loss of turn.

• Duets/Group sings do count as a turn. Please list both singers on the slip.

• Microphone Technique is key. Please sing into the mic, approx. an inch or two away from your mouth. This allows for a full clear sound. Singing over the mic, or too far away makes your voice sound thin and tinny. DO NOT hold the ball of the mic in your hand. It will distort your vocal making it muffled and hard to understand.

• Showtunes are listed under MUSICAL- (Name of the Show) ie. MUSICAL-West Side Story

• Please respect other singers, the equipment, the employees, and the KJ. Everyone is here to have fun. By damaging the microphones or song books it just makes the night less enjoyable for everyone.

• If you have a song request for something not in the book feel free to go to (web address) and send an email.

Chaos? You don't have general rules for society that folks conform to already? Seems most of the rules posted in this thread simply reinforce what you already consider polite; wait your turn, don't cut the line, be pleasant to all the folks and don't break things that ain't yours.

If some folks don't know those things society takes care of them already. If this isn't the norm then I guess folks *are* just nicer and a bit more civilized in Texas :)

I find it interesting that there are actual posted rules. I must live in a very civilized area, too, because I have NEVER posted a rule or a suggestion or a tip ... whatever. I've never had to. If it seems like there is going to be an offense commited, I'm quick to jump on it and quell the situation before it requires making someone feel really stupid. I can honestly say in 12 years I have never posted a rule ... or suggestion .. or tip, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've had to deal with an untenable situation. Must be the company I keep.
