What DK does for you is lower the key 1 step automatically, and provides a "guide track" for the singer.

It doesn't do that at all. On a *few* songs it lowers the key a half-step. I do dozens of songs in the DK versions, and it doesn't do it on any songs I do. Mostly songs where the vast majority of people do need the key lowered. It also raises the key a half-step sometimes, i.e. on Folsom Prison Blues.

I can say on a significant number of songs it does exactly that. I'm a high singer... doing journey, styx, bon jovi and hair bands frquently. :D early on i noticed when I sang DK it "wasn't how I was use to singing it" ... as when I used SC. A simple half step up brought it back.

I've also found that the tempo on many of the songs are slightly faster.

It is what is what it is. I'm not critisizing it by no means, I'm simply pointing out that DK is great for the new singer for the reasons I mentioned, and should be in a beginning KJ's library for those reasons.

80% or more of men are not high singers, which is probably why they do that. (And also why you hear so few men doing Journey.) I do baritone songs -- which is why I learned country after not knowing it -- and DK doesn't change the key of any of those.

Even a borderline tenor song like Precious & Few they keep in the normal key. I did note that they lower Don't Pull Your Love, though.

I am one of those who absolutely love DK. My range has diminished over the years, heading more for the low side. I also have no ego problems and will be the first to admit that I find the guide midi helpful on occasion. I have ALWAYS preferred them above others though, even when I had full range.

For those of you who remember back some, DK was THE gold standard of karaoke until SC and some others went with more aggressive marketing. DK was the brand for a host to have, and in my opinion, still is.

Keep in mind that karaoke is for amateur singers- DK did.

See I would disagree with this wholeheartidily, but it's only because I was weened on the Pioneer library which was the only other choice when karaoke first appeared here. We were going to karaoke clubs in 89 that only had cassettes & printed lyric sheets. Our first experience with words on the screen were Pioneer popping out around later 89-90 & they were pretty much the main format out this way for anyone who had karaoke. When DK finally appeared at a club locally, many of the laserdisc users didn't care for the DK sound and usually avoided the 'cdg' because there were no videos.
I still have my original Pioneer laser library in use & it's funny when I get someone that has been around awhile really surprised to see them & specifically ask for the video version. I think for the most part they were closer to the original song - you want to drop a key, ask! Going into a song blindly that was recorded in a different key can be a bad thing for a singer.

I agree. And, there really are some tracks on DK that are better than SC. There are some clunkers as well, but most of the time, if you compare a song by playing all THREE, (the original, DK and then SC) you'll find that DK will win when compared. Not saying that this is true with everything they did... and it's true that SC also has some "clunkers" as well as plenty of spectacular tracks...

As far as "SC and some others went with more aggressive marketing"... the aggresive marketing is simply a matter of licensing... DK dropped out of the U.S. market because their competition wasn't licensing the music they distributed... it was an unlevel playing field that they refused to participate in....

SC is good, because they use real studio musicians who are dedicated to reproducing the original track... down to using the same insturment brand (i.e. if the original guitarist used a 70s les paul then that's what they use).

Listen to War Pigs, or Renegade, or a variety of seriously produced tracks... SC really goes into production mode and puts out a quality product.

SC just doesn't do it right when it comes to the lyrics. They have four versions of Faithfully and have yet to get the lyrics right.

not really.

Do some shopping around. I've seen Foundation 1 for $375 a few times.

I'm one of those that got weaned on the Pioneer Lasers and cdgs. So DK was a change for me. Not bad, not great, just a change. Some tracks were phenominal. Some not so much.

I have a few I sing nowadays I prefer the DK listings for them!

When it comes to lyrics, I really have to wonder what these people are smoking.... and can I get some? :D

Sound Choice is better than most. DK is also out there sometimes with the lyrics.

Sweet Georgia Brown, Legends, All Hits, among others are down right scarry when it comes to "sound like it, but not exactly" lyrics in songs....lol.

Personally, I don't care too much what the lyrics say, I'm gonna sing what I want anyway. It can mess up the newbies though.

1) Been there and ran that kind of show!! :D :D :D

2) I liked the Pioneer lasers as well. Some nice tracks there.

If you REALLY want to here some nice tracks with full rich sound, one of the best and most under utilized out there- MEMOREX. Some of these tracks are just so rich and full sounding it's almost hard to believe. If you want a sample, try listening to there version of "At Last". It'll spoil you....

Anyway, as far as DK is concerned, it's more the way they were made- specifically for the amateur singer- that makes them my favorite for karaoke.

[quote="karaoke koyote @ Mon Mar 23, 2009 8:45 pm"]my friend not only is each town different, each BAR is different too. All you can do is write down the request for things you don't have and get them in the following week.

If you have internet access you can download on the spot. I do.

This website is pretty helpful for that:

http://karaoke-singles.com/

Listen to the top 40, go to karaoke bars in your area and write down what people are singing.

That's the best way to build your library really. Even then, someone is going to ask you for something you ain't got. Howev

This site is uk. How much do they charge american money per song? Can you just buy one at a time?

Just a warning -- that site is in all probability not legal. They have every single karaoke track ever made, including all Sound Choice and Chartbuster. That makes it almost certain that it is illegal.

Not sure what the bricks cost and sc site is down right now but I bought both foundations including s/h for $400 on eBay. They were used but had no issues ripping anything. I was very fortunate as I won series 1, and the guy that won series 2 backed out and seller sold both to me.
New vs used and how patient vs needing them right now is going to determine the money you will end of spending.

Ok, site back up--brick 5 sells for $109. I personally wouldn't buy for $1150 but again, depends on your criteria from decisions mentioned above.

I think the consesus is that that site is illegal. You can pretty much guarantee that if they have Sound Choice songs, then they most likely aren't legal.
As for American $, go to XE.com and do your conversion there. It will be pretty close as to what exchange you will get.

As long as we're speaking of brands again, I'd like to throw a recent bad experience.

It seems Chartbuster, Sound Choice, and some other mfrs. did sample packs for VocoPro. They can be recognized by a "VP" in front of the regular disc numbers.

Well, I found some of the SC pack ( VPSC8046 - VPSC8054) for a good price and purchased them. Bad Idea. I don't know if the problem was SC or VocoPro, but most of these versions are pretty bad, except for 54, which is a latin disc. The versions on this disc matched other SC versions, but the other discs seemed inferior to me. I tried switching them with a few of my regulars who sing SC versions and they picked up on it right away- not pleased.

This is only a small sampling of singers plus my own humble opinion, but I would pass if you run into them.

I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with the VocoPro Chartbuster samplers.
