Excellent idea. Where's the best place to get them at the best price? With good quality.

Time and place for children, yes.
But not all bars are like in the movie Roadhouse, with fights breaking out every 30 minutes.... or drug dens etc...
Some bars are just social settings for adults acting in mature ways and having fun.
Some bars should never have children in them, but others it may be acceptable before the late night (if it is legal in your area). It is all just to say that there is no absolute generality here.

I just buy the disk from karaoke.com. They are put out by Disney. There are two disks.
I also got a couple of Sunfly Miley Cyrus from tricerasoft.com. The Taylor Swift I have from my Big Country disks, and a couple from tricerasoft.com.

chartbuster has a taylor swift disk or two. I use express karaoke, but there are a number of online karaoke dealers.
I recently booked shows all five days at our county fair in one of 2 entertainment tents. all but one day the karaoke will be done by 8 pm when the main stage gets going. im really looking forward to the kids having there time to shine as there is no beer in the tent this year. (too many underage drinking problems). Saturday I will be doing sound for 2 bands, then when the second is done i will do karaoke from 8:30 till whenever they shut us down. reading this thread i am thinking about looking for a show in a restraunt / bar that could be early and geared more to kids.

Many of you have given me some great ideas and food for thought. Thank you so very much. After thinking about this last night, and reading your suggestions, i'm pretty sure what I need to do. Giving an extra "family" night is out of the question because of my other scheduling. Starting a bit early is probably the way to go. It will most likely have to be my own doing, no pay. This is already a 5 hour show so a few extra minutes, maybe 30 won't do any harm. I will probably also give this little girl the sound check and NOT count it as a turn. I think that alone might make her a happy camper. She is so adorable and patient, I am so impressed with her and her parents on how they all are so polite. If I start even just a few minutes early, we might be able to make an extra rotation , even if it's only a rotation of a couple of singers.
I honestly believe to cultivate this child and others like her is a good thing. This particular show is family oriented, just like the establishment. And to see the future of karaoke in these children is very promising. Giving any special consideration to these type of children, I believe might backfire is it's viewed as being unfair to the regular rotation, but making allowances for extra time for them is in my opinion the way to go. Wish me luck everyone, and I hope you all have these type of problems of your own. Because if this is a problem for you, it means you are doing your jobs as a karoke host, and bringing in the customers.
Thanks ya'll

I agree with starting earlier. Allow more of a family show between the hours up to 10. But wouldn't make any exception in the rotation at all.

By starting earlier word WILL get around that you have dedicated kids Karaoke(the kids will see to that themselves) and the parents will talk it up too.
I'd strongly suggest having a sit down with your owner and try to drum it into his head that it makes sense to go 6-9 and that he should hook u up with some kind of compensation for the efforts. At the very least he should see an uptick in food revenues from the NEW FAMILIES that bring thier kids specificallly for your family karaoke hours.
Also put a sandwhich sign out on the sidewalk announcing it(make one yourself if you have to--3/4 inch plywood painted and then stenciled in loud obnoxious contrasty colors should do the trick-USE BIG LETTERS)
"Kids Karaoke
Sat 6-9 PM"

We have what I call elevator music. It is background for dinner crowds. I would play it and mix with kids karaoke which wouldnt have to be as loud. Like I said you have a wonderful opportunity.

I was checking out Walmart's karaoke section yesterday - they have a Taylor Swift 16-song disc for I think around $10. You can probably order it on line.

I'll check that out. I found 3 hannah cds with 24 songs (not counting w/vocals) on eBay $22 total, all from same seller who combines on shipping. Think I will go that route.

The with vocal ones are nice for when you get 6- or 7-year-olds, since they have a hard time carrying the vocal on their own. I lean down close to them and conspiratorially ask if they want a little help on the vocal, and they whisper "yes" and I put the w_vocal version on. They usually leave the stage beaming.

I have to say , it would annoy me if I saw anyone getting preferential treatment, regardless of age.
As for going the 'family night' route, consider that many who might have showed at 8 and stayed until close would probably look for another venue or not show until 10 when the kids cleared out .Not everyone enjoys that kind of atmosphere.I'm one who wouldn't. I'm not saying it wouldn't work, but be prepared to lose some customers as you gain others.
One idea that might work , given that the girl can't stay past 10, would be to ask her to 'help' you at the start of the show by singing a song or two as a 'sound check'. That way, she gets her full night's singing in, and you get a room full of non-annoyed singers.

Yes, I have some songs for kids and the vocals do come in handy.
I would still opt to start 15 or 20 minutes and let the kids sing. Not a bad marketing ploy.

Let me get this straight ..show starts at 8PM sharp and the minors got to leave by 10pm. There is nothing more irritating to me as a KJ in a bar as when "children" get up and scream songs into the microphone. BUT !!! If this girl is ADORABLE and well liked and a regular customer I would use my better judgment and try to get her ONE LAST SONG before 10PM -- assuming she just didn't sing 2 minutes ago. Anyone who would have a problem with a 9yr old girl singing an extra song has some serious issues. IF this girl waited her turn like everyone the 1st 2 hours I see no problem and making sure she gets to sing her spot in the rotation before she has to go to bed

Referable to my post above, when I faced this very problem years ago, we moved the kids to a separate night and made it family night because the adults really started to resent the kids being there at all - ultimately they just started coming in later and later - the bar lost out big time because they lost 2 hours of drink purchases (since the majority of the families didn't buy any booze at all). As soon as we moved the kids/family show to the night before, the Thurs night show was packed again, standing room only if you arrived after 7:30 p.m., all the way until we ushered everybody out at about 12:30 or so. Often the bar would do $1600-1800 in 4 hours, not including food.
I'm not crazy about having kids at an adult show because the last thing I want to do is tinkle off the adults. They go to karaoke to relax, let their hair down, have a drink or two or three - and some adults just don't like to drink in front of kids. Often they're going to get away from their own kids - why would they want to deal with other peoples' kids who are taking up THEIR singing time?
Better to do a show dedicated to kids and families on a separate night. There aren't that many kids i'd like to hear singing for very long anymore. I'm not sure how I managed for four years, in fact. BTW, if you decide to speak to the place about doing a separate night for families/kids, it's a good idea to put on a 'family dinner' special that night - like all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner or something like that...not too expensive. You may be amazed at how many families will go along with that.

BFFL -- What kind of places are you singing at that you have to be worried about getting MOLESTED in the bathroom - I understand that BAD people can be anywhere at any time ... BUT GEEZ ... I don't think its a reason not to have minors in a restaurant at night ! ( assuming they leave by 10pm)
Assuming the parents are responsible and the Restaurant Bar is respectable
Let the little girl sing the extra song and those who have a problem are the ones we should be worried about

Jam,
After reading this entire thread, you finally said what I was thinking. I totally agree with starting a few minutes early too, if possible. I also would let her sing the last song of "her" night, right before she leaves. I don't care where the rotation was at. I don't think the op said anything about have a kids rotation problem, he had a girl that comes with her parents and stays till she has to leave. There is no special treatmeant here. I agree that you don't want it to turn into the kids overtaking the show, but I don't think that is the problem here. Make execptions where you need to make exceptions. This is one of those times....MrD

I played at a restaurant/bar and had the same situation. A family started coming in every Saturday night and wanted their two kids to sing. Okay...it's a bar and grown ups are out to have a good time. They may have had to get a babysitter to get away from their own kids for the evening.
Depending on the number of singers you have waiting to sing when you start I would suggest letting the parents know you can let them sing only one song early in the first set. Discourage them from staying to wait for another round and talk to the bar owner/manager. I'm sure they don't want them there either.

Miss Kitty,
This place is a family restaurant with a separate bar in the back. it has an adjoining hallway and doors, but other than that, it is 2 separate business'. The owner is a family oriented lady who really likes the idea of families, including children to attend. She would never go for the idea of stopping the kids from coming. Besides most of the patrons are very accepting of the children as well. There are a few exceptions, but mostly are congenial with the idea. My next show there is this saturday and I am gonna show up a bit early and be totally ready before start time, and will let this little girl get the sound check. That is what i've decided to do in handling this "situation" (it's really not a problem, it's a "situation") Then I will do my usual "get the party started" song that I sing, and then whoever is in turn first will get first song. Usually this child is jolly on the spot with song requests and is in line either first or second. If she is there early enough, I might even let her have an extra before all the others arrive,,,that is to be seen though.
For all of those who put your thoughts and ideas up here, I thank you all, truly! I've been at this karaoke stuff for several years, and by no means do I feel like I know everything. Each day I learn something new, thanks to good people like you.
Peace out ya'll
Scott
