You make it seem like these sorts of bad "divas" show up all of the time. I just don't see it that often and I go to a lot of different karaoke shows.

Where are you from? Again I say, this could be a UK thing?

It is everywhere, but very limited around here. It doesn't matter if you *are* Mariah Carey at my show, you are going to wait your turn like anyone else.

We did sort of have one the other night at my favorite show. She walked in right after I had my turn. She had her daughter there, and talked the host into letting her sing twice "because her daughter had to go home". I just pulled my own slip and waited for my wife's turn and we left. I drive 30+ miles to get to that show, and spend $50+ dollars when I am there. I might not be back for a while. I have been going there for three years now, several times a month. I probably spend $1200 a year there, with another $300 in tips. If they want to make me listen to that woman twice while she doesn't have to sit through me once, well they can find some other person who is willing to sit for that deal.

*That* is the problem with giving into head cases like that. As long as you just tell them they have to wait their turn like everyone else, without any editorial comment, then I think the problem diminishes greatly.

Wow, it was that quiet that you heard her tell the kj that or can you read lips?

I read lips quite well when they are 2 inches from a microphone. The host announced that was why she was letting her sing again before her turn.

I pulled my slip when she didn't leave immediately after she sang -- she and the daughter that supposedly had to go home were still there when I left 20 minutes later.

That DJ is just as much at fault as the woman. I would be tempted to explain to him the issue.

LOL ...

Hit the nail right on the head there Micky

I wish I had a pound (£) for every time I've seen this scenario.

"Just ordered a taxi so need to sing now"

"Got to get back for babysitter so need to sing now"

I've even heard - "We're going somewhere else so need to sing now"

Gets me every time !!

She is more at fault than the woman. I don't blame the woman for being the way she is, as young as she is. A lot of kids in the US today are taught they are special. Then they get out in the real world and discover not everyone is going to treat them like they are special. Here she was just getting the treatment she expected again. It will end.

You have just made a friend for life with that opinion - it's not just the US though, trust me! I would love to open up that particular rant, but it's not for here and now!

Hmmm...maybe there should be a little more....sympathy for the Diva.

Sympathy for the Diva by Mic Grabber (extended play version)

Please allow me to introduce myself
I’m a singer of style and taste
I’ve been around for a long, long night
Those other singers here they such a waste
And I was ‘round when the rotation
Was just 5 people, it's 30 now,
Make damn sure that microphone
Makes me the star, of this here show
Pleased to meet you
You should know my name
Yeah I’m better than you
It’s just my nature, you’re song is lame
I stuck around for another round
Tipped the bartender big nickel's change
Drove 'em all out for a long long smoke
But cheap beer pulled them back in
In this bar
I'm the only star
Cuz mic is hot
When they hear me sing
Pleased to meet you
Yes Diva is my name, oh yeah
Ah, you’re wishing now
You could cash in on my fame, oh yeah
It took so long
While other singers
Sang rap and country
I belched and yawned
I shouted out,
Hurry up folks
Cuz After all
It should be my turn
Let me please introduce myself
I’m a singer of style and taste
Each round I sing three times or more
Your song’s a duet, before your done (Ha!)
Pleased to meet you
Yes Diva is my name, oh yeah
Ah how you wish
You could cash in on my fame, oh yeah, more echo please!
Pleased to meet you
Yes Diva is my name, oh yeah
And you’re wishing now
That your name was just the same
Every one here calls me crimminal
Other singers lodge complaints
But the spotlight's on me
Call me Diva yeah
Hold the applause, show some restraint
So when you hear me
Show me full respect
For my vocal range and my taste
Please sit straight and listen quietly
Or I’ll lay your song to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Oh Diva is my name, um yeah
Aren’t you wishing now
You could co-star in my game, um mean it, more reverb please!
Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
Call me Diva, that’s my name
Let me hear you, can ya say my name
Call me Diva, that’s my name
I always sound good, you sound lame
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah
Whats my name
Tell me, bartender, whats my name
Tell me, waitress, whats my name
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah, more applause please!

I don't care what lame a$$'d excuse they try to pull on me, bat they're eyes or how hard they rub they're boobs against me (well maybe the boobs trick will work  ), they have to wait they're turn.

"But we're getting ready to leave!"

"I'm here every week, at the same time... see you then."

An hour later they're still in the bar.

Agreed. Since when is "We've got to leave" (and thus stop spending money) a good reason to give prefferential treatment? LOL

I love parodies. I like to write them.

Yours was brilliant and it was posted at the most opportune time.

If it wouldn't be insulting to some, I'd sing it from time to time. And, in fact, if the day should come that some DIVA p's off everyone at a show, I just might sing it and take my chances!

The key is these are A-HOLES, so it doesn't matter whether they are a Man Or a Woman, they are self centered A-Holes. Some people may resent the fact that you are appearing to be picking on the Woman Version. That is a weird word, because some women will just LOVE IT, and some women will just get upset if they were referred to by Diva.

I thought it was excellent, also. I would love to do it .

We have one person who qualifies for Prima Donna status. Guess she is an ex-Nashville back=up singer. The first time she sang, my boyfriend told her, "You're good!" and she replied, "I know."

She had no problem with our mics until I told her she would probably like the corded mic better and was welcome to use it over the cheap wireless Nadys. Ever since she found out what brand they were she always makes a face and a comment like, "I'm not gettting enough volume out of these" or something but she won't use the corded mic. Then, instead of playing to the crowd, she takes the wireless back to her seat and sings while reading the book to pick out her next song. After two songs, it seems we are never good enough for her and she leaves.

The bartendress says that she is just misunderstood and is actually very nice but we haven't seen that yet. But I always pretend like I don't notice.

That's funny LL. I get people in occasionally who walk in and all of a sudden everybody sees them coming in and they all feel obligated to run up and tell me that "that person" has won this contest and that contest, and has been to Nashville or has been to LA...Well, I say, they're back now....wonder how that worked out for them? Just another singer to me. I find it VERY interesting that there are people who should have HUGE egos who don't, and there are those who have HUGE egos without any obvious reason for it.

I'd rather see a great singer walk up, sing, blow everybody away, be humble and say thank you (e.g. Adam B on Am Idol right now, among others) than to have a whole room totally intimidated by them and their talent and feel obligated to jump up and down and cheer. Something about that attitude....

:D Karen I am one of those that can blow the crowd away with any genre. I used to love to go into a strange place and "steal" the show from the divas nonchalantly and use a humble demeanor like it is nothing. It has an affect on the crowd and atmosphere that is unexplainable for they know a pro is there and someone that sings for the pure pleasure it gives. Owners and hosts love to see me walk in the door because they know the show will have more energy.

Karyoker: I have to say that I have never intentionally done what you have described but there are songs that I sing that have that effect - and I am not one to ever brag about my singing abilities - I just think everybody can get BETTER ... but it is interesting to watch the local divas when that happens. Last Sat I was in a new room and I did "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet - but change it to "...My Guy." The beat is very infectious...and of course until the chorus comes and the lyrics are "he's so sweet with his get back stare" they don't know it has been genderized. I"m just coming off of six weeks of almost a laryngitic condition, where my voice would all of a sudden just quit three-quarters of the way through a song so I let 'er rip with Barracuda last night by request. Felt GREAT....I sing more for me than I do for others, though as a host when someone requests that I sing something I will do it under certain conditions (as in last night). No one should doubt the ability of singing to get the endorphins rolling...I think I'd burst if I couldn't sing!

Great song. always gets the room moving. But most of the guys can't hit the high "C". Haven't had a chick try it but that may be the answer.

Bet you nail it Karen.
