As most of you know... if you read any of my posts, I recently redid my system and got powered speakers.
Previously, I ran my monitors of a small amp, and use them the traditional way... on the floor, facing the singer.
I am now using the Behringer B212a as my monitor, and after playing around with it I've started to tripod mount the thing, with the speaker elevated to about 61/2 feat off the ground!
This has worked well in several intereating ways. First off, I get less feedback as the mics don't pick it up when the singer hold the mic down. Second, I can use the monitor myself to verify my mix, and Third, I think overall I can hear myself better.
Anyone elso doing the same?

I hardly use a wedgie anymore. In this setup we put a JBL Eon10 G2 in the corner of the dance floor on a table (to the right) back towards the stage.
In my reg venue mains towards the singers no monitor. Some singers a monitor intimidates and most dont know how to use it anyway and always bitched. They need to hear the full EFX and get used to it and hate a stage monitor.

I have just started using a powered 10" Peavey which I place on the floor on it's side. What I like about that arrangement, aside from it being a traditional set-up, is that it is front of me so I can more easily control the mix heard by the singer (which is why I got it)
I am anxious, like Koyote, to hear other opinions!

I put a little effects in the monitor. Most amateur singers (like me) sing better with them.

I personally like a little "depth" to the vocal, and adding a hint of reverb effect produces a genuine sound, especially in a bar which is traditionally a small to midsized venue.
The biggest issue with the floor monitor I've found is that amateurs will hold the mic head down when not singing. Combine that with those that sing so low you have to turn the gain up, that's feedback waiting to happen.
Reversing the position... i.e. putting the speaker high instead of low fixes this. The audio dynamic for karaoke is different than that of a full band where you have a group of musicians trying to balance their instruments with each other.
The instrumentals are already balance, you just need to mix in the vocalist. Doing it this way I've created a "curtain" of sound that is perceptiable when you walk through it. In the singer area, the vocalist is just slightly more prominent then what the audience hears on the floor.
As I've said earlier, the bars I'm in don't really have a nice "stage" area... I'm forced to set the mains forward of the KJ/Singing area, thus the elevated monitor provides a "snapshot" of what is heard in the main area of the bar both for me and the singer.
I imagine, that if I actually had a Stage area, and could get nice speaker seperation, and keep them parallel with the stage, turned slightly inward, I would go with a more traditional placement. But unfortunately, My gigs are in "L" shaped rooms... .

As a singer I like a dry monitor placed where I can find a spot on the stage that I can move a few feet either way and hear the monitor or mains or a mixture that I like. With a dry monitor most karaoke singers are struggling because they are frozen in front of the graphics monitor and cant find their spot. Aim a full mix at them and they relax and start singing.
I cannot get a proper mix sitting anywhere near a singer. I have to run FOH to get the right levels and adj the EFX properly. In the pic above the station is to the left with the corner of the table in view. I have a 50 foot and a 100 foot snake.

I normally don't run effects in the monitor but put a tad in for Mickys visit last time & left it in ever since. Not overbearing, but noticeable.

Yep,
I add whatever effects I have going through the FOH speakers through the monitor, as well. I just assumed that, that was the way it should be done. In short, I thought that the monitor was to let the singer enjoy what he/she "sounds" like through the FOH speakers? And, of course, if the singer requests something different than what I want to send through the FOH speakers, I can deliver that request through the monitor only! Yes? No?

Normally a monitor is to give an accurate representation of what you sound like so you can be able to hear yourself & correct pitch when needed. Having regular effects in a monitor as like the mains doesn't really help anyone better themselves, but some singers do feel better with the security blanket of effects making them think they sound better when in actuallity, they really don't need it alot of the time.

Well, if the effects aren't required after all, that should basically eliminate the opportunity for much feedback!
That being the case, I have a nice stand that I constructed that raises the monitor up two feet off the floor which I am thinking about using. Besides looking neat, it is on rollers. Most important, it seems to be easier for the singer to hear the monitor at that height!

I have a little powered monitor that I usually set on a table near the singer and aim it at them. It works fine, but it would be MUCH better and more logical to mount it to my lyric monitor stand.
Anyone every seen a mounting device that would let me do this? I could probably fabricate one with SS hose clamps, etc, but fear it would look tacky.
I seem to remember a combo LCD/Monitor stand that someone sold. Anybody?

Thanks for the input Barry
I have seen small (very inexpensive) monitors that are designed so that they can be mounted on a mic stand, but i have never seen any type of contraption designed to attach a monitor to a stand in the fashion in which you hope to use it.
Try, as you suggested, playing around with your own fabrication. If the monitor is not too heavy (making the stand top-heavy), you should have much flexibility in what you come up with. Maybe you could provide a picture and get some ideas from others on the forum? I have fabricated many homemade devices for my equipment and other members have done the same!
