As eric stated, I think we all have our opinions on what a true ballad is. Having said that, and since "That's Life" was mentioned, this is one of MY newest songs that I've added to my repertoir. I do it in more of a Ray Charles style, and I can tell you this, EVERYONE in the place, including the people in the bar area come into the dining area when I sing it. So, I guess my point is, that it ain't the song, it's what you do with it. Although, I'm sure there are songs that you CAN'T do anything with.

I actually like singing ballads, but I don't do it at my venue- or I should say rarely- a pretty girl....

Anyway, I have no problems with ballads if they are timed properly. If the room is rockin', and full strength hi energy, a ballad can kill the whole mood. I know that karaoke singers are not pros, but a little crowd reading should not be a bad idea....

'Course that audience-reading can be tough, especially in a long rotation. We'll be having a great party, I'll put in for some Green Day, and by the time I get up I've got three 70-year-olds in the bar;-)

I can relate to that. I get into a rotation a bit late and thinking the crowd will go for some Rocky Horror, and by the time I get my turn....tumbleweeds are rolling across the floor.

Last time I did the Time Warp (again!), the only ones in the bar who danced along were men over 60. What was THAT about? They had a great time, though.
