Ya know Lonnie, I agree with all of that... in theory. in reality I have the hosting software setup so it does what I want and is consistent to a fault. Sure it can be changed but it's amazing how much easier it is for training and how I don't get the "So-and-so runs the rotation wrong" comments. I share my venue with the owner of the music and I did all the equipment setup. He's an old school guy used to less than optimal equipment (Think Vocopro) and this is a step forward for him.

Fact is without the software they're no making Karoake noise anyway since the collection is all on HD now and the disks are in storage. I'm more interested in making sure they can concentrate on the singer and the sound and not the stuff I can automate like the rotation.

That's all good, but they should know the fundamentals to begin with IMO. Let them learn what it really is all about in training then let them appreciate the computer but with the knowledge of knowing how to really run a show without one in their brain.

Training an ear is also next to impossible. They either have an ear for good sound or they don't.

Starting out putting your music on computer may be good, but we're not going to go out buy a computer or laptop, buy the software and transfer over 1,600 discs. That's time and money to buy more music and/or enjoy life. If we lose a disc and can't replace it because it's out of stock, no big deal. And in reality carting the music in and out with our set up is advantagous as two of the three towers are used to put our rig case on and our "office". See Photo Gallery.

Wow, so you believe all new drivers should train on a stick shift first as well?

Yes I strongly believe this!

What's the purpose of learning an outdated method of keeping track of roation if they aren't going to use it? If it works for you, that's great but why spend time training for something you are not going to use? It's the 21st century! Technology is there, might as well use it! No offense but you sound like someone that hates anything new that comes along. I'm 50 and I love to try new things! A newbie will be just fine with the software hosting program and will learn it 10 times faster than a paper system. Ever filed your taxes on your own with a paper version or the software version? No comparison.

I want all my hosts to know how everything works from a manual rotation to actually running with discs in the unlikely event occurs a computer goes down and I can't get down there to repair/replace for the night - no I am not going to keep a 2nd computer there, but do have all discs and the players (yes I would If I was mobile too) at every show.
I do not want an automated rotation being used in my shows, if they cannot learn how to do it my way, they can go look for a job elsewhere. It's like math in school today, kids are required to have calculators - what happened to actually thinking. Try to have anyone today count change back to you - WHY should they know how to do that, it's all in the computer/register. I was at a Walgreens the other day & the price to pay was 8.55, I gave the gal a $10. Knowing i'll get $1.45 back. She typed in the wrong amount & couldn't figure out how much to give back. They called the manager - HE couldn't figure out in his head & had to get a calculator.
Sorry I want my hosts to know 'out of date' methods just in case something arises where they will need to use them someday!

In my case, I will never need the disks. Not unless at some point digital is considered illegal and banned. I have a backup laptop, takes up very small space. I understand your analogy, I was a paperboy and can do the change thing in my head very quickly and have seen others struggle when the machine was not working or giving them the wrong amount. But the analgoy doesn't turn the light bulb on for me. I like the way my hosting program handles the rotation, I like the fact that I can manually override it if needed. Other than that, the rotation theory isn't rocket science and using a paper form imo does not or will not make me a better host in the long run for using it.
So may be we should just tell any newbie asking for the best program to just go with a player for a while and learn the rotation method on their own?

I am with you. This is why I keep a Mule & Carriage in the backyard. I want all my family to know how to transport themselves MANUALLY, in the event one of our cars breaks down and I can't get back home to help - no, I am not going to keep two cars, but I have the Mule, Carriage, feed, tack and everything there for them. I do not want some newfangled automobile being relied upon in my house. It's like pens in school, kids are required to use ball points - what happened to actually writing with quill & ink?

Sorry. I want my kids to know these so called "out of date" transportation methods just in case something arises where they actually need to use them someday!

 <---this means it's a joke Lon!

And I will chip in and say

Go with Sax 'n' Dottys - I do and I love it.

I 2nd that motion, I have 2 Laptops set up using S&D.

One other peice of advice for the OP....
If you do setup your laptop for Karaoke/DJ do NOT use it for anything else.
Also, rip your CDs/CDGs at 256 or better, you will thank me later.
