I run powered PAs but I have run into an issue in the past that I want to take care of in the future. The venue has passive PAs and wants me to use their setup. This could actually be a good thing as I won't have to lug mine along. Problem? If their PAs are passive, I have no amp. I need some guidance in shopping for an amp. As far as wattage, I don't know. I'm guessing I should shoot for something in the neighborhood of 600 per channel? What can I expect to spend and what specific ones are worthy?

Well first you need to determine what their speakers are, what the program power rating is, ohms & then match the amp to the porgram power at the ohms required.

Depending on the speaker 600 watts per channel could be overkill, just right or under powering.

Carvin, QSC, Crown, Yamaha, Peavey, are all good amps.

That seems kinda odd, the venue providing speakers but not amps. If you ask me that is a plan to get their speakers blown up. Whoever is in charge of the sound equipment at the venue should be able to give you guidance on what amp size is appropriate. If not, look at the labels on the speakers AND find out how they are wired together (if it isn't one cable per speaker) and post that information.

Let me clarify. This happened to me at the first gig I went to. They did provide the amp. In fact I ended up using their mixer. Now I felt uncomfortable with the set up since I didn't know it. So basically what you guys are saying is that most likely any venue that has pas already set up, also has an amp?

House systems vary, but almost any venue that has house speakers will also have house amps, cross-over, and room/speaker-tuning EQ. They may offer a house mixer and other gadgets, but most places will be just as happy to let you use your own mixer.
