I don't know how many people on this board watch American Idol - this is the first year I've really paid any attention to it ... but I'll suggest there'll probably be a mad dash to pick up "Mad World" after watching Adam sing it last night on Idol. This kid is truly, truly amazing. I feel badly for the other great singers participating in this show - to have hit it on the year when Adam is on there. Even if you don't watch the show or appreciate the whole concept, make an effort to catch this kid singing. Truly an inspiration for any singer - karaoke included.

Just had a look on youtube, the kid is good, no doubt about it!

There's something so wrong in people with this kind of ability having to prove themselves to Simon Cowell. Its like a discerning chef having to seek the approval of Ronald McDonald to get his career started.

Another tenor, sigh. It would be nice to see a baritone or bass able to compete, but it is unlikely to happen. Just like in opera, in pop music the tenor is the royalty.

Wow I guess I'm going to have to watch AI more. This guy's really good!

I've never heard the song. But I don't think there'll be too many who will want to sing it. As I'm sure you're aware of Karen, it is really hard to sing broken triads and fourths that quietly, that high, and still stay in tune.

What a performance! Thanks for the link. This guy's going places.

I usuallu watch every week and this year there are some really GREAT singers.
There is a 16 year old girl who is also fantastic, but Adam is a real artist.

He is either a natural with some imagination or is getting some very good advice !

Every week he raises the bar. Just a consummate star. Yes, Bill, very difficult to do those intervals. I have loved that song forever and to hear him sing it was just amazing. Love this kid! Humble, too - has never appeared cocky about his performances. Other performers to watch: Danny Gokey and Alison Iraheta (who is 16 years old).

I've been wondering how a song I don't remember was picked for AI (which usually deals in the familiar) when I stumbled on this Youtube clip, a cover from a few years ago. This version of Mad World is one of the most watched vids of all time with 12 million hits.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4

What a beautiful song. Sung by a mere mortal this time. Maybe even more powerful because of it. It must be very well known and I've just missed it.

Simon can kiss my arse!!! There is talent at karaoke shows worldwide that could compete on AI.

On myspace there are singers that blow me away.t I would suggest supporting them and buying their albums.

Here are 2 of my friends. Listen to their songs.

Carissa Bogan

Susan Hickman

Eh, I love A.I. Been watching in for about 5years now, every episode possible. I do NOT however like the fact that "Karaoke" gets slammed in the show so often. It has turned so much more into a "talent" competition, than a pure singing competition. If it was the latter, a great karaoke singer who "nailed" the song would always do well. They are looking for the whole package though, there is a lot of people with lots of talent, that can't sell records....hence the problem. I'm not so in love with Adam, he's hugely talented. I'm much more for Danny Gokey. Gives the nation something to talk about....besides politics and recession! MrD

Danny G is a different kind of performer - both of these dudes just exude "soul" which is what makes their performances so incredible. I am like some sort of emotion meter - a great song performance will cause the tears to roll and last night Alison did it but Adam just blew me out of the water. I have gone on Youtube and watched some of his other performances (off idol) - his stage experience is definitely helping him here. He is an amazing actor. In fact, he seems to have everything that it will take to win this competition.

I at first was a little ticked at the way they refer to a singer's performance as "karaoke" when they don't like it but the fact is, Lil Rounds last night did just that - a karaoke performance. If she survives another week, maybe she'll get that she needs to find a song and make it her own. She has a lot of singing talent but just doesn't seem to know how to break through and demonstrate who SHE really is. We've already got a Tina Turner out there.

I, too, have singers that come to my shows that are amazingly talented vocalists but I'm not sure any of them could get on a stage with a live band, make a song their own, and entertain with it. I think we can get too stuck on song reproduction and lose sight of the soul part of it, which is what makes a song belong to the singer for those 3-4 minutes.

I see and hear the talent of Freddy Mercury in Adam.

More info on the Gary Jules remake of Mad World. It was originally featured in the cult thriller Donnie Darko and then picked up for the Xbox promo for the game Gears Of War. From there it was used on several TV episodes. It kept growing in popularity and by late 2006 it was the number one download on iTunes.

All this was from Wikipedia.

And somehow I missed it until today! Haven't seen Donnie Darko though and don't have an Xbox either.

Now... after hearing the much lower keyed and wavery pitched Gary Jules version, practically anyone could sing it. Even you Mickey. Highest note's a D4 (whole tone above middle C). I wonder if I'm going to get any requests for it.

That's Mickey the "Big Brother of karaoke" watching over us all, his disapproving visage looking for any violation to karaoke etiquette. :D

I love Adam. He is, in my opinion, one the best vocalists and possibly the most interesting performer to ever appear in the live shows on Idol.

Been watching Idol since the first season. I am surprised by some of the past final winners, and how they slowly disappeared from the charts after all the hoopla. Some of the runners-up have gone on to achieve bigger things.

Adam is truly the star this season. I enjoyed his version of "Ring of Fire" as well as last weeks "Born To Be Wild." Danny Gokey is a great singer, but never challenges himself.. its the same thing each week.

Danny G is alright. He is so much more than his singing. We in this area are really plugging for him. He's from West Allis and it's a blue collar suburb of Milwaukee. Home to the now closed Allis Chalmers and Briggs And Stratton and other factories. He is no LA/New York/San Francisco type of celeb wannabe.
