I really like this $20 USB audio connector made by StarTech, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829128002

I bought it before I knew about more professional products like the M-AUDIO stuff. I believe it's really mono, not stereo; but I use a stereo 1/8" to two 1/4" TS cables into a stereo mixer channel.

Those adapters are 2 a penny now, all over Ebay and all Chinese made. They're definitely 2 channel out but mono mic level only on the input.OK for webcam type applications.

Shame they don't do a line input version. The Griffin i-Mic is a similar product but with selectable mic/line levels with good reviews and reasonable performance.

CUT OFF THE GROUND PIN on your plug and your problem is solved. I have done this, and have had no issues whatsoever.

Cheers

I have had this problem with all of my laptops - the quickest way to get this fixed is to CUT OFF THE EARTH/GROUND PIN ON THE PLUG OF YOUR ADAPTER. I think they call this 'lifting' the ground/earth.

Don't worry about dying from an electric shock. All the new DELLS are plastic and do not conduct. :)

I have fixed the same problem on an HP, ACER and Dell laptop by doing this.

Good luck!

Just curious why you should not plug sound through the head phone jack and use an external sound card instead?

an external sound module will mostly give a cleaner sound. I used a little cheap one that looked like a flashdrive for about a year...it cost $20 and it eventually failed. I have a soundblaster external that I sometimes use, but since I too got rid of the earth pin on my plug, I have never had sound issues bad enough to warrant using another external....except for one place. It is the restaurant I regularly sung in...I would have one active speaker over the other side of the room and one close by. Rather than run an extension cord across the floor back to me, I always plugged the far away speaker into the nearest socket. I would always have a hum. For ages I put it down to the antiquated dimming system they had on the lights which made a similar hum. I only got this problem at this venue.
Then one day someone told me it was because the speaker across the other side of the room wasnt being run off the same multiboard as all my other gear. I seriously doubted that could be the issue...he went and got a long extension and proved he was correct. Since then I always aim to have both speakers coming back to the same multiboard. Sometimes it means using extra cords, but I prefer that than having my sound compromised

a board with multiple sockets on it...you plug it into a socket on the wall and it has another 4 or 6 sockets.
