Hiya, I am about to get an Emu 0202 usb sound card.
Before I do, does the Lexicon Alpha give better quality.
Regards, Jerry

Both will give more than satisfactory results soundwise - especially over a stock soundcard. The EMU is a newer unit which supports USB 2.0 which the Alpha uses 1.1 - although runs perfectly fine on my 2.0 ports. Not a huge deal. The Alpha has balanced 1/4" outputs instead of the non-balanced connections on the EMU - again, may or may not be a big deal for you. The EMU being it's newer also cost about $40 more.

The reason I got it is that it was $40 cheaper than the Alpha.
54 Euro from Creative Labs in Finland on Ebay.
I wanted the Alpha but the price never dropped.

I don't know about the Alpha but the Emu comes with some great software bundle; Cubase LE, Sonar LE and Wavelab Lite, just that alone is worth the purchase
For the non-balanced connection, not a big deal if you are using good cables to connect to your mixer

It also comes with a very nice Lexicon reverb package plugin.

I did too at first (have a problem registering), it was something to do with the online registering. Went back & carefully re-read each step & followed them & finally got it.

Before you do, check to see if your computer makes good enough sound on it's own.
In the past most laptops had lower quality sound cards (5years ago or so). Now they are generally much better and an external soundcard will not provide much if any benefit.
I had a soundblaster external USB soundcard, but it ended up making the songs out of sync with the lyrics (a delay of about .5 sec on longer songs at the end with the screen lyrics compared to the sound).
I just stopped using the card, becuse it did not noticably improve the sound quality. It was just one more thing to worry about plugging in.
Of course good enough is subjective. My criteria is if I can't tell the difference listening to the song in an otherwise quiet room. If that is the case with the background noise normal in a bar you probabably are going to be doing great.

Unfortunately Soundblaster cards are not of the greatest - especially in latency. I can understand why it didn't sound much better then the built in & also the lag time. It's not made for pro use like that - although it could have been a computer compatibility issue as well. A pro type card like the ones mentioned above will typically give a noticeable improvement.

I agree with Lonnie's comment and your problem was related to the video acceleration in directX, it's an easy fix

Just installed my Emu.
Lon. was right.
It is amazzzzing. Like he said... Light and shade.
It gives punch that my Berringer USB module never dreamt of.
I know laptop sound has improved... But...
I am hearing better dynamics than I heard from my Aphex.
I am going to buy another just for my desktop at home. I run a JBL Radial from it.
My Stereo is going in the bin.
Can you tell I'm impressed ???
Less than 60 Euro's has made my £800 Mackies sound like $1000000 Mackies.
H.P Server engineer for 30 years and it takes a Karaoke forum for me to take the plunge. DUH...
So so excited.
Thankyou all that have endorsed a good USB sound module.
Thankyou thankyou thankyou.

As much as they have improved, built in sound cards will just not sound as good as a nice aftermarket, beit PCI for PC or USB for either.
