Maybe I am the only crazy guy here who does this, but every mic including mine is set exactly the same. The only thing I ever adjust is the volume as everbody does sing at different levels, and the echo if they specifically ask me.

I doubt you're the only one but there are different ways for different folks. Obviously we all have to adjust levels for the singers, as you said everyone has different volumes. For me at least, this adjustment also sometimes changes at the compressor. Soft singers get a higher threshold and then a higher ratio, louder singers lower threshold with a more gentle ratio. I also EQ for each singer. Many women have a real hot spot at 2k so often times I've gotta use the sweepable mid to pull a little of that out.

I have a separate microphone for myself that only I use. I keep that channel setup for me. I tend to have a loud voice and sing very close to the mic. As such I get a lot of proximity effect so my eq has the sweepable mid at 250Hz and with about a 3 db cut. Also, in my case my channel has a different level going to the aux send that I use for ducking than the other microphones, so that weighs in as well.

However, I'm guessing I'm probably in the minority and I also seriously doubt based on how you described this KJ that she would understand even a 1/4 of what I just said. Maybe she has a soft voice and feels she needs to be brought up a bit, who knows. It could just be that she turns everyone else down to protect her equipment because she doesn't have compressor/limiters that would give her that protection automatically. Regardless, not someone I'd want to sing with either, so I feel your pain man! :)

No crap Tim I got more more money invested in cables and accessories than they do in music and invest more monthly in petty stuff than they invest totally.

One of the shows I host at has what I call a "dummy" book. The book has some songs that are on the computer, some songs that aren't anmd only lists about 2000 songs including dupes. . . the system has according to the owner 20,000 songs.

It's embarassing telling the customers that the books don't match, especially when quite a few that come down to see me, come to my own show, with my books (which list everything I own which despite only having 6000 songs, has all the ones they sing because like most hosts, I buy as people request).

Because these hosting shows, help pay my rent in public I politely call them inspiration books.

I understand how you feel. We recently lost out a gig to someone with a loaded drive because the selection was larger than ours. Problem is, most venues don't really think it is THEIR concern whether or not the KJs selection is legit, they figure that is the KJs concern. So it is hard to make them care about it. They just see the selection and think "bigger is better".

A while back I started a post about dummy books. What I mentioned a dummy book was it that th KJ is trying to cover his rear end and has more songs in his laptop then what he has in his book. He even had some old disk numbers from manus that aren't in business any more. As far as I can tell it seems that that same kj only does dj music right now. Hmmmm. I wonder why that is?

So how are these "dummy books?" Seems like you are faulting things other than the songbooks.. I don't see what the issue is with the books. They are expensive and time consuming to update continuously, if you have any quantity of songs. If a host is a joke, or the computer program has the wrong track number listed, this makes the books "dummies??" Not sure what this means.

This does not literally mean DUMMY, as in IDIOT, MORON, it means dummy as in "not the real one".

In other words, they have put out a relatively unexciting basic songbook that does not interest the authorities because it seems like they could easily afford to legally purchase all the songs, but they ACTUALLY have purchased an illegal collection that is not legit.

Those of us who hand buy music, and don't just get online and procure tons of free music, realize that it isn't the sheer number of songs that you have but the quality and desirability of the songs you have. Said it before, will say it again, if a person knew the top 1000 songs, you could have those 1000 songs and do a gig anywhere, and seldom have to tell someone you didn't have their song. I always point out that if by appearances someone who is attesting to 100,000 songs doesn't have a VERY expensive car, extremely nice clothing, amazingly expensive mics and speakers, etc., that in all likely they are NOT as wealthy as 100,000 songs would require, and that it is illegal music. I think if an owner is looking only for the sheer number of songs in a library, they really have NO clue about the business anyway - it won't be long before someone else comes along and sells them another bill of goods. Lots of naive owners out there who get sweet talked by a nasty pirate! (apologies to all my real pirate friends!)

Sometimes it seems that people on the forum are the ones who care about quality, legalities, etc. but it doesn't necessarily go into why a singer would choose a particular place to go. Crowds/friends can trump sound, selection, etc. And you can make yourself look bad if you hint that someone else is not legal--as one singer said to me, "Who cares! It's not like the police come around and check hard drives."

The best I can do is say, "So if someone opened a bar next to you and didn't have to pay the fees for licesnses, etc. that you do and they get their liquour from hijacked trucks at a fraction of the price that you pay, then its ok with you as long as no one checks?"
