I think I got very lucky. I was checking craig's list this morning and I almost didn't click on the ad for PA equipment and audio gear, but out of curiosity I did. I scanned down the list and one of the items was a Shure Beta58 with an L4 diversity receiver. I zeroed in on that item. There were a couple of other items that looked like good deals too.
So I went over after exchanging emails, we hooked up the mic and it worked fine. I also got (2) 50' heavy duty power extension cables with an electrical box with two duplex receptacles on the end, (6) 1/4" patch cables, a 50' mic cable and a 100' mic cable and a light for a music stand.
The total came to $160. It actually came out to more than that, but he cut me a deal. The wireless Beta58 mic as part of the total came out to around $60.
I took it all home, hooked up the wireless Beta58 and I am VERY pleased to say the least. That mic sounds great and makes my voice sound really good. Now I am done buying microphones unless an amazing deal comes along. The receiver is rack mountable, so when I get a rack, I'm good to go.
He also had a couple of Yamaha CP2000 power amps that I REALLY wanted, but I just didn't have enough money.
Well, anyhow, now I have a REALLY good, pro quality, wireless mic. I'm a happy camper.

I just emailed him and the mic is really old. He said he thinks he bought it in '93, but it looks in good condition. I figured it was maybe 5 or 6 years old. The transmitter is plastic and has a thin silver/gray paint on it. I was thinking I might be able to spray paint it, but I probably I'll just leave it the way it is.
For as old as it is, it works perfectly and sounds very good. I checked to make sure it wasn't in the 700mhz band, it's 200 mhz so I'm OK. After I tested out the new Shure wireless I took out my Audio Technica 200 series wireless and tweaked the mixer, amp etc. and it sounded very good too, so I'm all set and good to go.

Glad to hear it, that was actually the first question that popped into my head. That mic should work out quite well for you. I mean it it's hay day that was a concert series microphone (in fact you may still find some of them in use on large productions). I'd imagine it's got many years of life left in it. Congratulations on the new gear.

Thanks.
What I REALLY wanted was a Beta 87, but I couldn't pass this deal up. I used a wired Beta58 a few months ago and I was impressed and that's when I got interested in the Shure Beta mics. Even if I knew how old it was at the time I was buying it, I would still have bought it because the price was so low I couldn't pass it up.
I wonder if I ever have a problem with it if Shure can still repair or refurbish it since it's so old? This is one of the first mics I can use without a foam windscreen. I was also able to walk out in front of the speakers with no feedback even at very high volume levels. I don't think it was used much because it's in such good condition.
Another thing I like is that because it's a high gain mic I can hold it away from my mouth instead of right up to my lips.
I might even let customers use it when I host.

I doubt it. I tried to get them to fix one ( a broken one I ended up with ) and they sent it back. Quote: Another thing I like is that because it's a high gain mic I can hold it away from my mouth instead of right up to my lips.
I do love a good mic. They just feel better on so many levels.

I still like my "cheap, crappy" mics, but now that I have this one I doubt I'll be using much else. It's almost like using a wired mic as far as sensitivity, gain and sound quality, but no cord. I also noticed it has VERY, VERY low handling noise like my wired Sennheiser e835s. I now have 17 or 18 mics. Maybe time to sell some on ebay or craig's list?

LX4 receiver they can still service, if it's an L4, than no you are stuck with what you got & most service centers won't even touch wireless mics.

I have this mic and the L4 receiver. Sounds great! Is rack mountable but the antennas are not telescoping. I will have my rack finished tonight, I had to put the mixer on the bottom and the mic right below the laptop and leave an openig behind the transmitter for the antennas to go up. The mic sounds great! The only issue I am having with it--I can't turn it off at the mic without turning the transmitter off first or the hissing noise thru the mains is unbearable. I tape the bottom up so customers can't turn it off.

I used my new mic last night for a show in a VFW on the beach. It worked great and sounded really good. I walked all over the bar at one point with it when they were having the 50-50 drawing to announce and get a few more people to participate and there were no cut outs, no dead spots, no interference, nothing, it was clear wherever I went.
I did forget one time to turn the receiver off first and when I shut the mic off there was a HUGE static noise for a second before I could turn the main volume down. Hopefully I won't forget again.
I'll be using the new mic again tonight when I do a show at an Elks club.
I keep a corded Sennheiser e835 plugged in on standby just in case the battery gets low or for some reason the wireless stops working BECAUSE-The show must go on.
I bought (2) 280mah 9 volt rechargeable NIMH batteries and a charger a couple months ago on ebay and so far they work great. I hated throwing batteries away before. The pay back for rechargeable 9 volt batteries is very fast and from what I have read they can be charged aprox. 1000 times.

I use a limiter on all of my mics for all the obvious reasons, but I have had a few instances when my 500-whatever-MHz Sennheiser G2 sets will produce noise when the transmitter is turned off. It's nice to know the sound will be limited by something other than eventual clipping in the signal chain or power amp.

I used it again at an Elks club I performed at Friday night. Really sounded great and sensitive, high gain, great sound. From now on only Shure Beta wireless for me. Fantastic mic!

Wow it never crossed my mind to go On craigs list or ebay... I'm gonna be looking to purchase speaker stands as well as a condensor mic sometime in the future... as of right now I do my home recordings using a Shure SM58 which is more for analog than digital recording & it picks Up every lil' nuance which isn't necessary... u r only as good as the tool you use, right? Now that I think bout it, I may just buy a brandy new mic so I get the warrantees and/or gaurantess that come with it... I think they go for bout $200.00... oh well, looks like I gotta go to work again so I can bring home da money
