More people will die from Smoking today than from Swine Flue all year, yet nobody panics about that. I saw the ultimate in panic today on my drive to work. I saw a man in his car, alone, on the interstate...with a mask on. ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

we have the same vaccinations Tim, yet a school football team on the school trip of a lifetime have been confirmed as having contracted it...further than that, confirmed cases from others who travelled to NZ on the same plane from LA that the school team was on

OK I just got off the phone with the chief molecular biologist for the Center For Disease Control.
Just kidding. He was just on the news.
Anyway he said that the combination of genes in this H1N1 virus appears to be new and has never been identified before. Anywhere. Or in anything.
They haven't found any of it in pigs. Only in humans. He said that the CDC had until recently been calling it swine flu because the virus on record whose genetic material it most closely resembles is an isolate from a pig virus from the 1930s.
Is there a lot of misinformation out there or what? Why are they killing all these pigs off for?
Anyway he also said that the human component to the virus's genes kind of resembles an H1N1 virus from 1957, and it's possible that anyone who contracted that one might have some partial immunity. Otherwise, it's a wide open virus and our only protection so far is that it doesn't appear to be very strong. Yet.
edit: Oops this just posted on Yahoo.
OTTAWA – Pigs on a Canadian farm have been infected with the new swine flu virus — apparently by a farm worker back from Mexico — and are under quarantine, officials said Saturday. It is the first known case of pigs having the virus.

Morgan and if you check, those people have a mild case and not in any danger of dying. The only reported death in the US was a baby from Mexico. We have 17 or 19 cases here. They are home in bed, not dying in a hospital. I still contend that severe cases are not found in Western countries because of our immunization regimens.

Tim I know this...I dont sit with my head firmly planted up my...oh never mind
My point is that it is contagious and it is being contracted by those from countries where immunisation programs are carried out religiously. The fact that the virus doesnt appear overly strong isnt the case really...it should still be of concern and watched carefully. More particularly now that a human has passed it on to pigs.

My Doctor told me that this flu is no worse than any other flu that comes through every year. Since I was alive in 1957 and had the flu as a three year old (I haven't had the flu since BTW), I am pretty much immune. Plus being a diabetic, I am subjected to a once yearly vaccine shot.
