Hey...Just bought a hard drive karaoke player and one of the things I've wanted to ask ohard drive player and laptop hosts...what do you do if it crashes?
My plan is to keep a SCDG player handy and enough SCDGs and CDGs with me to run a show just in case. That's about 6,000 songs on 5 SCDGs and maybe 20 latest release CDGs; with a couple of songbooks.
Another KJ I know actually brings his CDGs to every show, but never takes them out of the trailer unless he crashes, which has happened.
Another KJ keeps a second external hard drive handy but has only one laptop.
What's your backup plan?

I always have all my discs on site to finish out the rest of the night in a pinch, but have a spare laptop at home that I can bring in the next night if a reboot isn't all that was required on the computer. It's happened before where I needed to reboot only, but during the few minutes that is happeneing I just pull the disc for the song that crashed & restart the song.

Nearly always bring the CDGs but if the PC crashes I lose the rotation (need to write rotation saving into my program!) Spare copy of songs HDD at home, backup laptop and other PC. Backup LCD monitor, multiple mics, spare cables etc etc.

Its not that hard or expensive to setup an older computer tower to do shows.

Right now I have 2 laptops and my reg computer which I took out of the rack and put it in a tower for backup. Any of these I can hook up in aminute.

I currently have 2 backups of my libraries but you should at least have one on a separate hard drive.

I have been doing digital karaoke for years and only had 0ne crash which lost me a gig. It was an outside $600 gig though.

What if it crashes? Right now, say goodnight folks and go home.

I know that has to change. I've been talking with my son about putting together a backup shuttle this summer when he visits.

Partly why I don't rely on the comuterized programs solely. I still use slips & have them in order as well. Old school may be inconvenient to many, but still does have some advantages!

I do agree with Lon on this. Once I enter the song, I put the slip in a small box upside down.

One great thing about compuhost, if computer freezes up, once up, compuhost holds the rotation and all the songs in que.

I have a spare laptop, my work one. It has CompuHost and most of my material (sometimes doesn't have the latest downloads). I just move the dongle and I am ready.

I did have a laptop crash last year..

Private party, and a drunk spilled a full beer in the keyboard..

Fried it..

The host had a laptop, so I downloaded S&D again and all the needed parts, and was up and running in twenty minutes..

Now I carry a spare laptop and external drive.

I always carry my backup laptop in the car when doing gigs. If I crash one I just boot up the backup and I'm good to go in minutes. Laptops are cheap these days and for $400-$500 you can pick up a new one. It is well worth the investment. I keep all my songs on a 1TB external drive and have a back up of that as well.

somewhat (well very) embarasing crash for me this week. I forgot to make sure the back of my pickup was closed firmly and it opened on the road. A box containing my gear including my hard drive fell out onto a busy intersection.....

Hard drive was killed allong with one of my two Tvs for lyrics display.

Fortunately I had backued up all my songs, but I did cancel that night. As I would have to do all of the re-sync of the hard drive as well as my backups were scattered around in several different places.

As parts of the circuit board controler for the hard drive had physically broken off it appeaers to be a lost cause as an external drive, but it looks like drive itself may still be functional, all I have to do is plug it into a desktop as a mainfraim computer...

As I was doing a free show, mainly for friends, it was no biggie to cancel (I do them every week). I had everything up and running for a paid gig 2 days later.

If by some fluke I had an issue with the computer i just would hook up the spare. Mp3 player would be running to keep music playing during the few min it would take.

The most I've ever had happen is some goofy error with the program itself, which required me to restart the program.

This took 20 sec at most, and compuhost restarts with everything (including rotation) but filler music in place so its no problem. I've never had a complete system crash.

I need to get a backup labtop, just haven't had the funds available, but I need to get one. Things are going good right now, I just added a fifth gig, so that's definately in the works.
