OK I tried an experiment last night. Fired up the rig with the 13" CRT for the singer monitor and resized the graphics display on the laptop to 6.5" (the size of that 7" LCD we're discussing). I played two songs. First was "Kiss This" by Aaron Tippon, the words are pretty typical size. On the TV they were readable from over 10 feet away, on the laptop screen, I had to move closer to about 7.5 feet. Then I tried "Paradise By The Dashboard Lights" where the lyrics on the screen are very small during the point where both vocals are going simultaneously. From about 8.5 feet I could still read the words on the 13" monitor, I had to be almost sitting in front of the computer (i.e. 1.5 ft) to actually be able to read the words on that 6.5" display.

From this I've concluded I and my singers have no use for a 7" LCD display and I really want to get a 17" or larger LCD for my singers.

Hope it works for you Eric. I'll stick to my free 15" flat panel. I can read it from a long ways away and I have terrible vision. I see no advantages to a 7" except that it might fit in your pocket!

I have personally sang on one of the 7" lcd screens, about 6 years ago. One of the places I sang karaoke, the kj got the flatscreen, had it mounted on a mic stand, at that time I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I wear glasses, and with bi-focals to boot. I'm 6'8", so the screen was set to the height of a "normal" person. I could see the screen with no problem, if I stood at the stand, and didn't walk all over the place. Everyone else was still using the crt 13" on a stand. I have to admit, I liked the fact that it ALMOST seems that you're singing without a screen, no visual obstruction between the singer and the audience. I liked it so much, that I was going to get one when I started my karaoke business, but they were way too expensive, I got a 15" lcd hdtv for the same price I would have paid for the 7" monitor. So, naturally everyone loves my 15" screen, but I STILL liked the feel of not having the APPEARANCE of a monitor in front of you. That's my opinion as someone who has actually used one of those monitors.

So size does matter LMAO

I have people that have trouble seeing a 13" screen let alone a 7". I personally wouldn't use a screen so small, but that's me.

If I was sure all my singers were able to read from such a small screen without a problem, I'd use one that small too. Heck why not it would be easier for me.

If no one is complaining and you aren't losing patrons over it - why not go smaller.

Forgot to ask, Eric, where did you find a 7" for 100.00? Was it new, or used? Also, welcome back Babs, nice to see your logo again.

Probably something like this
http://www.audio-discounters.com/plvhr75.html
These are usually AC/DC operated & have composite video inputs.

{edit}Looked at this one again, it is not AC, DC only. Most likely could be adapted however.

Serenity,

I had asked someone to forward the info to you, but I can't be sure that happened. I got it on Amazon; it's a Haier. It has an A/C adapter an accommodates RCA video.

I haven't had a single complaint at my weekly gig about the small screen, even from those drinking. But most notably, I did a birthday party for a 92 year old last night. Karaoke was the main attraction! In attendance were dozens of his friends and a few younguns'.

While I had taken my 17" monitor for audience use (and the resulting sing alongs), everyone who came up to the "stage" used the 7" monitor. Not a single complaint about any problems with SEEING the little thing=== not a one!

No,

It's not good new for me.... it's good news for whomever is interested in "the latest thing" and can benefit from it's:

low cost
small footprint
light weight
nicer appearance

Never said 'good news', I said good for you!

Still prefer what I would like to see as a singer & that's what I will continue to offer - old school or not.

AND AS A SINGER, I initially rejected the small screen.

But when other singers who were using it weekly indicated that they had no problem with it...I opened my mind and re-evaluated the equipment.

Was it too small to see? NO!

Was it too small to keep up with the swipes? NO!

Did it I have ANY problem with it? NO!

Did it seem strange to use? YES!

Why should it work for others and not for me?

Should I consider it for my show? WHY NOT??

Worst case for me, if it didn't work for my shows I'd end up with a nifty PORTABLE TV that I could make good use of, at a very reasonable cost! Though, in fact, once I had opened my mind about the equipment I never really believed that it wouldn't come to good use during my shows! And, it DOES work and it is being put to good use where it was intended to be used.

So, for those of you who are open-minded, consider for yourself why it is that the a 7" TV wouldn't work for you while it is working for others? And if it works and is already being used by KJ hosts, why not consider it for your show? After further consideration, you might decide that it isn't for you, but what if it CAN work for you?

Never said YOU shouldn't! Not ONCE! I said I PERSONALLY find a 7" screen hard to read, I have 2 of them as cue monitors behind the booth for me & they ARE HARD to read even for me. So I would never subject MY singers to one.
Funny thing is, you may never hear the complaints! I've been in this business since 91, and I rarely hear complaints to my face. I hear them later through other sources if there are any~!

My new singer video monitor.

Wall mart- $99. 15.6 inches and only 4.4 pounds.

The only dislike I have about the new monitor is that it has an AC/DC converter and runs of of DC and that means an extra "box" in the chord (that box is about 1 pound of the total weight).

No way I would ever use a CRT again on anything trying to be mobile.

It replaced a 19" widescreen LCD. The smaller size is more convenient for me and it seems large enough for the singers, but maybe a bit small on some songs.

I have a 21" lcd widescreen for the crowd.

Do you have a link by chance? Or was it in store.

Definitely agree with that.

Since most singers are used to a 13" CRT, a 15" would be the equivalent to a 16 or 17" CRT. A 15" is a nice size.

I'm curious about your $99 WalMart monitor too Dr Fred. What kinds of signals does it accept?

It was in store at the computer section. It has regular VGA input, but not the DVI-D.

One disadvantage is that it did not have some of the regular positions on the back plate to use the regular flatscreen TV wall mount kit, so I had to take off the regular desktop stand and drill a small hole in part of the mount to bolt to a bar that fits into my monitor stand. It is so light I do not feel that I really nead a heavy duty stand...
