I think it is a great way to show professionalism giving one to a new employer after a new gig to find out what their thoughts were. It builds good communication if you are offered the gig permanently and shows extra effort and concern on your part to do a good job.

If you are at a long running gig, your crowds are large, and your employer is happy I can see how you'd consider not using them. I don't feel the need to use them right now, but I'm not saying I never will. I understnad the sentiment of feeling you already know your crowd and owner after yrs of doing the same gig, but what if someone gave you a fantastic idea to use at your shows that you've never considered. It sounds like the people who have use them that have successful shows found them helpful, so I can't rule them out.

Has anyone used them and found them to be a waste of time?

I used them as a supervisor of 38 people long ago. I made sure they were comfortable that I would not know who was who. I didn't care to hear the good stuff. People will tell you that all the time and it doesn't help you improve (good for the ego though). The bad stuff, now after you get over your hurt feelings, you can use it to improve. Throw out the stuff you can't control or won't change because it will cause other issues.

As others have said however, how do you get them to fill them out if they are drunk and don't want to. Or will you be able to read the scribbles? I see some merit to this, but I don't think it will get a big turnout of form fillers.

Forget how it makes you FEEL ....Think about how important it could make the singers feel if you actually asked their opinion ?

That's all well and good if you're out to make singers feel important by asking their opinion... you can do that without a form and before they get drunk.

Otherwise, if everyone is happy and your club is busy, you should be able to tell if you're doing an acceptable job.

The singers will have no problem expressing their feelings if they don't like what's going on... some by complaining and others by simply not showing up.... If there are those that show up regularly, don't sing ever and don't like it then they are the alcoholics and are there to drink and don't really give a hoot what happens around them.

Acceptable job? who wants to do just an 'acceptable' job? I've never been satisifed with a C grade on anything EVER.

If there is an opportunity to continue to improve, I want to know about it. If a singer has a suggestion I haven't thought of, I'll give it creedence if appropriate and add/change something about my show. If the venue I'm at is experiencing a drop-off, I sure want the singers/people at my show to be able to voice their ideas about why. Why not hand that info to the owners? Give THEM an opportunity to improve things, too.

There are people/singers who would never risk making suggestions or voicing complaints, or even giving kudos...an evaluation or questionnaire is a great vehicle.

It might really be interesting to occasionally put out an anonymous questionnaire about your show - even though you feel pretty confident that it is the best it can be based on attendance, and the fact that these people are all your friends. Believe it or not, many of us have a roomful of friends at our shows...but when I ask them to fill out an eval for me, they're always happy to do it - that kind of friendship extends both ways. Many of them value the opportunity to say what they wish to anonymously.

I don't think Karen is saying everyone HAS TO USE them. She's just saying she has found them useful.

as someone stated earlier, singers are usually prettty up front if they have a problem with the kj or venue and are vocal about it. My point was to give them to your employer/manager. These are the folks that pay your wages and most of the time the evaluation forms are taken seriously. Sometimes an owner has a suggestion or two that really makes a difference. Also when its time to renew your agreement for additional shows you have these nice evals as a reference for you both to see. Again, everything is in writing and there is no "grey" area.
I've never considered giving these out to singers but you never know.........
