Oh wow Jam! Sorry to hear that.
Did business look slow to you? Sometimes bars are more a victim of high lease contracts than the economy and times.

Bill - I didn't get to the place until 9pm on Saturday - The bar Saturday night looked busy enough ... But I think they counted more on the RESTAURANT side of the business which never appeared overly busy. But then again I was only there 5 hours a week ?

Wow What a way to find out, by text message. Did you see it coming at all?
I guess it is better than going to work to find the doors locked.
I'm sorry this happened and I hope you find a replacement gig easily - Good luck !

Didn't see it coming at all !! - I really didn't know the CASH flow or Profitability of the bar -- It seemed busy on Saturday night in the bar ... But I guess not enough to pay ALL the expenses

Boy that's a shocker then. You're a great KJ and I'm sure you can get a steller reference from them. I foresee your Saturday night to be filled in no time. I'm just sorry it had to happen in the way it did.

So sorry to hear that. I can relate.
My company just cut my pay in half and took me out of my engineering role. 31 years with my company. Now I'm watching others walk around that have been with the company less than a year. Sometimes getting to the top of the pay grade has its disadvantages. Now I have to work Saturdays. Puts a damper on any kind of week job (now have set hours in the morming) and Fridays.
I'm in the middle of immigrating to Canada. Any Canadians on here from the Toronto area? I know the job market is bad there too but what about karaoke and dj business?

I think we all are thinking in the positive mode that in bad times drinking and entertainment would be the last to go. But in some areas, with rolling furloughs and high unemployment, people ARE getting to their last. In our area, Friday nights remain stronger than Sats because people are going out their first night off and then not having enough left to go a second night. But the sad thing about you being let go is , as much as attendance may have dropped from what it was, there may be NO ONE in the bar without you. Wonder if you will hear from him again soon.
But texting was sort of low. Makes you feel unappreciated but it was probably more his cowardice than anything wrong with you.

At least they told you. I was at a place that closed their doors and that was after I quit but I went back the next day to get some equipment that I had left behind and the doors were locked during a time the bar was always open.

I didn't realize they closed entirely. That is even more disconcerting. Maybe the owner just had too much to deal with at the time and that's why he texted you. But it has been happening around here also--even some casinos that have been around a while. Some of the high energy shows that appeal to young people are still thriving. We will get through this somehow.
We had the experience of going to check out a Thursday night show and when we arrived the PA system and rack were in place and the posters advertising it were on the door and walls. After we sat a while and nothing happened, we asked the barmaid when karaoke would start. She said she just got a call a few minutes before from the owners that they cancelled it due to it being "the slow season." Guess that KJ got a surprise call also.

I am very sorry to hear you lost a show, but I definitely know how ya feel. I really wish you all the luck in replacing the gig. Times are very tough right now, but if you persist in trying, you will always come out ahead. Good luck!!!
Scott
p.s. Here I am siting at my friday show thats been giving me such heartache,,and there are 7 customers in the bar, total. Its only 9:37, so it's early. Let's see what happens in the next 30 - 45 minutes.

If you had a following there, ( and you probably know this, but...) I would head to the CLOSEST venues immediately, before they disperse to other places.

Sorry to hear about your lost gig Jam, I just got my notice also, but the place didn't close down, he just couldn't afford karaoke anymore. I tried to work with him, but there were just too many variables to deal with, so when he said he had to cancel, I agreed with him that it was probably the best for both of us. I told him that if he changed his mind in the future, let me know. Ironically, I got asked to do a birthday party there next Saturday. So I guess we'll see what happens. I was only there for three months, for a trial basis. In my opinion, not enough time to build enough of a "regular" following. Oh well!

Im back over at the farm for mom's day and most of my reg summer party folks are tightening their belts. Their company party is one of the first things to go. This country is hurting and going socialism is on the way to destruction.
