Hey, I'm trying to see if anyone has done this. Ideally it would be cool if I could do it on the computer.

I'd like to have some sort of noise meter for a singing contest I'm going to run, and I'd like to do it this way rather than use judges.

Anyone have any ideas??

Just get a "db" meter about $45 at radio shack. Of course it is looking at a broad range of sound not just the frequency range of clapping.

www.applausemeter.com Might give that a look is your PC based. Looks kinda fun to me.

One thing you might want to take into consideration is it's going to measure the loudest obviuosly. If your contestant has a group of friends close to where you measure, they are obviously going to be louder than another contestant in the back that might actually be better & only has a couple people with them where the front people won't get as loud for the person in back - even though they may have been better.
It will seem to those in the back it's not really a singing contest but either how loud can you get or who brought the most people in will win that catagory.

I went to a karaoke singing contest and the person that brought the most people with them won, because they all voted for their friend/relative. I didn't think that it was a fair way to judge singing talent. At another karaoke singing contest, they had three judges who decided who won the contest in their respective age groups. The judges were former accomplished singers and singing instructors. They had the contestants broken up into groups of twelve and under, twelve to fifty five and fifty five and older. An applause-o-meter would be a cool visual effect, but not a good way to judge singing talent. IMHO

Actually, while there is money involved, the point is to get as many people to "come for you" as possible. This isn't to be taken TOO seriously, and is all in fun. I think the "applause meter" software with the 1 to 10 rank will be perfect.

The bar owners loved the idea as soon as I pitched it too them, as they had had issues with judges in the past... not showing up for all the contests, perceived favoritism, etc.

This will be cool because I can put it on the big screen for everyone to see, and I think will inject some excitement into the contest by its very nature (folks need to get rowdy for their favorite singer). 100% fair?... hmm, probably not. 100% fun? Yep.

I for one am tired of seeing the "American Idol" formula used at every singing contest, and this is something unique. Remember my motto "...howling good times", this fits the bill I think, heh, heh.

This will be an advertised event, and we all know there are those ringers who "shop the contests", and I will never see them after that... this contest isn't for them, its for the locals and their friends who are the bread and butter of the bar. If the ringers hang cool, but if they don't like the way I'm doing it and leave... boo hoo.

Went to a contest Friday. I thought it sucked, I left and went next door where regular karaoke was being performed.

My partners and I do contests regularly. It seems like we change how we do it every time. Hopefully we are making it better. People always complain about contests when they don't win, but it is fun for the singers. I would like to think of a way to make the rules so it discourages the "ringers" you mentioned. Budweiser had a ping-pong tournament in this area and all the people who won from each bar were those type of people, not the bars' regular customers. Some of the bar owners were not happy about it, but what can you really do?

So anyway, our contest is usually a few weeks of "first round" and one person each night can become a finalist, whoever gets judged the best each night. Then the final night has all those people, a whole lot of judges (last time we had 9) to try to increase fairness, and a busy night with good prize money.

I thought about a different format where you get some score each night, so the people who come sing every night have a better chance of winning than people who are only there 1 or 2 times. So there would still be a final round but part of the score for each person would already be decided by their previous performances.

Hopefully we will try this within the next month or two and see if it works better. I want outside people to come sing in the contest, the whole point of it is to increase business; but I don't want the "ringers" to win the prize money, I want people to come and turn into regulars and win that way.

my hope is to make the contest fun not only for the singers, but for those not singing as well. I plan on have three ways to place: Best performance, best costume, and best overall.

As the first contest, I plan on running it for three weeks. The first two weeks will be gauged on "overall"... costume and performance. First week eliminate down to nine, second week down to five, and third week down to top three: Best overall, costume and performance.

Contests can be fun, if the participants go into it with the right attitude. (I didn't say "always fair", mind you, I said "fun")

An applause meter may add to the enjoyment and really get your onlookers (onlisteners?... didn't think that was a word) more involved. Throwing in a "best costume" category is a fun idea too:)
