I just heard from a friend (who said she heard it from another friend, who said they heard this directly from one of the Managers of a place where I do a Friday night show) that the Management of that place is not happy with the KJ couple that I currently have filling in for me (for the next 2 months), because they refuse to hook up to the Big Monitor up front (for more people to see).
When I first had them come down (so I could introduce them as my possible Fill-In), I showed them how I set up, and one said that she did not feel comfortable hooking up to anything that was not theirs, and thus said that she would not use the big Monitor. I told her that it's a very simple hook-up. All she needs to get is a Tag-a-Long RCA Jack/Attachment, and an extra RCA cord to stretch from the Big screen to her screen. Then the two connected RCA's will act as one signal (no splitter or RF/Modulator needed). I told her that people look at the Big Screen from the Audience, and it sometimes encourages them to want to sing. While she was there that first night (watching how I ran the show), she said she was scoping the people there, and claimed that nobody was even looking at it (to justify her stance on this).
Should I e-mail her and inform her that Management is not happy with her decision not to hook up to the Big Monitor? On a side-note, it's funny/ironic coming from me... especially since I took the stance of refusing to give Management a 15 or 20 minute Dance-Break set during this very same show.
I feel that if I do say anything to her, I should point out that they are representing me, and it could effect me being hired back in Mid-July. Then again, if I don't say anything, the place may be ecstatic to have me back (when my nights switch again). Of course, that could also backfire, where Management may be too disgusted with it, and not want me back either.
I feel like I'm in a Damned if I do, Damned if I don't situation. What should I do???? And, if the advice is to say something to her/them, how should I word it?

I don't understand what their hangup is. Hook up the monitor and be done with it. If they won't, that's strange - find someone else. Recommend calling or doing in person, not emailing.

First of all, don't act on the old "a friend of a friend" told me routine. Go see Management yourself and ask them how things are going and see if there are any problems and what is going good. Then talk to your fill in to rectify any problems and to tell them what they are doing good. It's best to tell them what they are doing well, so it will make the things they have to change easier.

Exactly! Go to manangement first. On the other hand, these people are filling in for "YOUR" show, so they need to hook into everything you connect to & if they refuse, get rid of them!
You can even leave them the wiring they need with a diagram, if they still don't do it, dump them! They obviously aren't there to help YOU.

I agree with Lon,
Do it all yourself as the owner of a show, or system I would not jepordise the gig by letting second-hand talk mess up the show.. get the who's who's first hand. and then fix it yourself. Then set the proper people straight, before it really gets out of hand.

Not much that can be added here ...It is important that you speak directly with management if you think there is a potential problem..It shows management that even though you're not hosting the shows you are "over seeing" the quality and out put of the FILL IN KJ.
If management insists on hooking up the BIG monitor than you have to insist your fill in comply or look else where !

Cue,
First, talk to the management, and find the story. I agree with everyone else.
Secondly, ANYBODY that fills in for you has to do the show the way you yourself would. You got that gig based on what you were doing at that time.
If they won't do it, find someone else. Tell them that.
Are they using your equipment?

Thank you all for the advice. I did half of what you all suggested, and did not need to talk with the KJ filling in for me.
I stopped by the place earlier today, and paid a casual visit with one of the Managers there. I just told him I was stopping by to see how things were working out with the people filling in for me. He told me that things were a little slow there, but that they were OK. I just reaffirmed that there were no complaints, and he told me, "No."
Then I mentioned that my nights change back in Mid July, and that I'll stop by 2 weeks before to see if they want me to return. The Manager then told me that he won't be having the Friday night Karaoke show during the Summer (because he feels that things are too slow around there, and Friday is their deadest night... They have Karaoke there on Saturdays as well, but one of the Managers runs that show). The Manager told me that after next week, they will drop the Friday show. I asked if my fill-ins know this, and he said that he did let them know (so it won't be a shock to them). He told me that they would start up the Friday show after Labor Day, so I said I'd keep in touch.
Since the Manager didn't say anything about the TV screen issue, I won't bring it up to my fill-in. I don't feel there is a need to create a tension between us when they'll only be there for 1 more week.

Sounds like an REO song "Heard it from a friend who, heard it from a friend who, heard it from another you've been messing around......"
Good idea going to the source.

Yes it was, DBK. And I'm glad I asked here first.

Cue- I can't believe what I'm reading. They're going to stop Karaoke on Friday cause it's a slow night?? What's going to happen to your regular crowd of singers?? Sounds like Fridays will be slower than slow. Our business slows down some for summer time but, I'm thinking of adding a weekend DJ in addition to my Sunday night Karaoke. I'm even going to try a Karaoke weekend, Karaoke on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, just to see what happens.

Although it sounds like the issue has been resolved, I have to disagree with some of what's been posted here. I agree with finding out first hand whether they are hooking up as you showed them. However, if they are, it matters not if there are complaints. It matters that they are basically working for you. They should run the show exactly as you would. If they're not hooking up the big monitor, they should be given an ultimatum.
Of course, now that you're losing that show, I guess the problem has fixed itself....

I'm shocked. I would be furious if the fill-in had that scheduling information and didn't pass it on to me IMMEDIATELY.
