I am three hours from home in another state when the karaoke bug bit me... Got online and found what appeared to be a great place about a mile from my hotel. Showed up early, got a good seat, even met the KJ. Problem? No book. Everything was computer based and all I had to do was ask and he had the song. I immediately thought bootleg. Me being the newbie, I got called up first. Everyone said I sounded great, but what I heard was speakers that were so loud, you couldn't talk to people at your own table. The KJ also had the mike so hot, I held it out at arms length just to not bust people's eardrums. I literally heard every "T" and "P" that came out of my mouth. In all, it just wasn't a good experience. Oh get this, he says he can't sing. Yet, proceeded to sing anyway, REALLY BADLY... So now I know where karaoke Hell is...

I'm always leery of attending a show I know nothing about, just for reasons like that. And I HATE when there's no books, OR a way to look up what's available.
Yep, sounds like you were at a pirate show... worse yet, they didn't know sound, either. It's one thing to have an illegal library, but sheesh!

I'll never understand why some bar owners don't check out their entertainment before hiring them and not just hire a KJ because the price is right.
I've seen this with bands too. Then they wonder why no one comes in. Our bar owner will hire any band if the price is right. They will have a crowd the first night because all their family will attend then they're lucky to get 5 people in the bar after.
I'm frustrated with this because we used to have a band at least once a month, so I'd get a break. But he has built a reputation now of having crappy bands, so people don't come in for them. Your not going to hire a decent band for free or $300.

Curious --What was your perception of the REGULARS or other singers ?
Did they seem to be enjoying themselves ?

I dunno, I'll take an overly hot mic over an ice-cold mic any day. Even if the mic is so hot I have to hold it between my toes, it is better than that ice cold feeling....when your lips get frozen to the mic. ![Mr. Green ](./images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif) It's a rare day when you have to tell the kj to pull in the reins a bit. Whoa hossies!

I agree ! I have a very strong voice. I usually have to adjust when I hear myself in the monitor as to be not loud. But when I go to a place where I feel like I have to eat the mic to hear myself I get mad. I'd rather pull away then eat the mic. Eeeew ! That sounds gross. ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif)

No books? Hmmmm sounds like this guy is "Lazy" and simply dosen't want to take the time to make sound adjustments or anything. It reminds me of a show I seldom go to where the kj's (yes two of them) simply use the show as an excuse to drink beer get drunk and never compliment a singer on thier performance. The only reason I go there, is that it is at a casino and my girlfriend likes to play the slots every once and awhile.

Jamkaraoke,
There was a mix of people, but I noticed the KJ only hung around three tables. I stayed long enough to sing twice. The rotation was about 10 singers and maybe two of them were good.
Seattle,
Like you, I LOVE a hot mic, but this was crazy. If I'd have done some Aerosmith or Bon Jovi, I probably would've blown out the windows in the back of the room. When I practice at home, I don't even use the mics.
You know, another thing that hacked me, was there was no monitor. The dude had two large speakers at one end of the room and that was it.
I really have respect for you KJ's that know how to set up a room. Maybe some day in my travels, I'll get to meet you.

No point being made... Just sharing a bad karaoke experience. I've sang in some dives back in the day, but at least they KNEW what being a KJ is all about. Having books on hand, no slips, no monitor, no sound check, nothing. The guy running this show was not very professional.

I have been through the same experience multiple times. Horrible sound, one even with a blown speaker...It's a shame because it gives all Karaoke a bad name/taste in the area...I've heard numerous times that Karaoke doesn't work here ect. ect....but bad Karaoke doesn't work anywhere! I take alot of pride in my sound, and in my show, and I've had to explain to soooo many owners that If I have to do it myself, I will set a new standard for karaoke in the area. When my show is over, they agree that I have raised the bar for other hosts! I'm not trying to toot my own horn, trust me when I say my eight year old could have run better sound and shows than what is the norm here.

Actually I think I went to your shows at Stevie Tomatos and Applebees in Naples area recently, and you do indeed have a good show. Compuhost user, as I recall. With Shure SM58 wireless mics and JBL Eons or the equivalent.

That's right. They are very good. I very much appreciate it when karaoke shows care enough about their singers to 1) give them pro-quality microphones and 2) have a monitor for the singer to hear well.
We pretty much decided to buy in Cocoa Beach, so we won't be staying there gobs of time. But we have a couple of close friends in Naples and I have your web site saved for when we do visit.
