Sounds like this fill in is causing enough stink about the matter that she probably will never get a KJ job in the area.

If she just let it go, and tried to learn from the experience on what a crowd like that wants she might have improved eventually for that type of karaoke crowd. We all started out with a few shows that didnt go as well as we hoped and, ideally we have learned from the experience.

As it is her theatrics will be talked about in the trade among bar owners, KJs etc and none of the local ones will give her another chance for a long time.

Maybe she does ok with a different age group/music genre but it sounds like a fail at your club.

A big part of a non-regular karaoke gig at a club is advertizing your regular show and your special events (parties/weddings etc) where you can get the real money as a KJ. She failed with the opportunity.

They're going to hire a lawyer to get $75 dollars from someone???? LOL Is there any written contract involved here? Is there even an oral contract regarding the price between anyone, or have some people just ASSUMED something here?

The only oral contract here is that I told this guy that I needed a fill-in. This guy used to work at my bar before me, albeit back in like 2003. The guy told this girl that worked for him about the oppertunity and HE told her it was $175.00, not me. He told me he had it taken care of with his girl, I didn't think anymore of it. She wasn't doing me a favor by being there anymore than I was doing her a favor by giving her the gig, IMHO.

I honestly assumed the bar would pay her the $175.00 too, as I have had countless fill-ins over the last 5 years there and they have always paid the full amount, even when they didn't particularly like the fill-in, which is what makes me think that this gal had to have REALLY done some things wrong. In that light, I think that if the bar management thought she didn't deserve the full amount, then she most likely did not deserve the full amount.

This bar even pays me the full $$$ is a football game goes into overtime or something like that, and I only work for an hour or two. The bar owner is by no means stingy, and has always been more than accomodating to me and anyone that has worked in my place, so again, I'm fairly certain that this gal brought this issue upon herself.

Yes, it does seem she brought this on herself. It seems like maybe she rubbed the management the wrong way from the get go....Another thing - I find that if a venue has a really great hosting company that they've had for an extended period of time, even a good company can come in and the expectations are the same but how they do their show may be slightly different. I'm always leery of covering for someone unless I know that THEY know exactly how I do my show and that it'll be a good fit.

I'm in the position of now dealing with a sub who covered two of my shows and I have a feeling that he went 'pirate' between the shows. He won't get any referrals from me at all if that is the case, and I'll never use his services again ... and make sure that any potential venue knows of the legal ramifications of using his services. Since ASCAP is now snooping in our area, it doesn't seem unreasonable that pirate enforcement could be too far behind. Hey, I can hope, can't I?

What is happening is that her and the guy she works for are calling me and texting me 8-10 times a day harassing me about this $75.00, threatening legal action, and being just plain nasty.

I'm not particularly scared by the threats, but it is a bit stressful. However, I'm not going to let them practically blackmail me into paying the $$$, either. I still contend that their issue is with the bar owner/manager.

Actually, it sounds like it would make a good People's Court or Judge Judy episode. That could be fun.

How they think it is your responsibilty to pay is beyond me. What argument are they using that makes them think you should pay? and why is the guy she works for getting involved. Is he getting a cut from this gig?

The bar didn't pay you to pay her. You don't have her money. If the bar only gave her $100, why didn't she take issue with the venue owner that night? And have they tried to contact the bar about this at all?

How many times have you actually talked to them? and what was the conversation like? Out of curiosity.

At this point I think all you can do is ignore the calls until it blows over.

Up until this afternoon, I have returned all their calls and texts, and even had a long conversation Wednesday night with the bar manager and bar owner trying to get the $$$. Once the bar said no, I was satisfied that I had done all that I could.

I told them that, and that's when they started getting a little nasty. Today is when they crossed the line with the stupid lawsuit/strongarm crap they are trying to pull, so I told them straight out that I am not speaking to them regarding this matter anymore.

Actually, here is my exact e-mail:

"I fail to see how I am to blame for this. The bar is responsible for paying you for the service you provided them. I have tried to help you collect the $$$, as I think you should have been paid more too, but the owner and bar manager contend that you didn't earn it. If you disagree, your issue is with the people who made that decision, and not me.

If you honestly think that your issue is with me, and not the bar, then I'm sorry, but I will not be paying you for the job you did for them. I really needed the work and couldn't really afford to lose the gig that night myself, let alone pay extra for it. Please do not contact me anymore about the $75.00."

Topher - I think that is all you can do at this point. It was nice of you to call the bar yourself. I think that is above and beyond since you yourself need to keep a good relationship with the venue. I just hope they don't now take it upon themselves to hassle the bar too.
