A few months ago there was a discussion about where to place books at the beginning of the show... In one location, or around the bar.
Since I started two years ago I had been placing the book around the bar, but after reading that thread I decided to try it the other way, and this thread is the result of that discussion.
I have to say, placing the books at a table near the KJ booth seems the way to go. I make announcements during the show that the song books, slips and pencils can be found up front by me, and people that are interested come up and get them.
This is much better then when they are scattered around the bar and during a busy show people are asking me where are the books... and I don't know! This way, I can just point and smile and boom... they've got the song book.
I've also found that folks will grab a slip or two, and look thru the book right at the table, or return the book to the table when they are finished with it! This keeps the books easy to locate during the show, and finding them at the end of the show a snap.
I love it, and the singers love it (once they make the adjustment from the old way).
Not that I haven't had complaints, but I had complaints about people trying to find books before, and they were covered with purses or crap from people who weren't even singing and I had to hunt for them during a busy show. Or, I'm trying to find an open spot on the bar to slip them into. I've also found my books stay cleaner and don't end up with a bunch of "karaoke splouge" all over them either! Don't ask my why, but people seem to take care of them better this way.
This is soooo much easier!

Hey Koyote! That doesn't surprise me a bit. I had both a karaoke show and a cabaret show where the whole show was based on what people requested I sing..both had books for them crowd to choose from...especially in the latter case- I sat on a piano inside a huge bar built around the piano. I left 6 books around the bar right there where i was and that was the best solution ever! When I tried to put them on tables through the venue- I lost the books...or many times they would cut the little LED lights I had attached to each book- so people could see them in the dim lighting- off! Thieves! Keeping your books close is - for me- the best way to go! Glad to hear it's working for you too!

Wait a sec... hold the phone. You've got blinking LED lights on your books??!
That's sooo cool! Did you make these or buy them somewhere? What a great idea! Pirate threads be damned, sometimes this forum actually comes up with a useful gem or two.

Koyote,
I think you can get those lights at a bookstore like Books-a-Million or Barnes & Noble.
Usually they're up front where all the knick knacks are. They're like night lights for people who read in bed, but don't want to wake their partner. Neat idea, actually!

We did that when we first started out and all were gone by week two. I even tried one that attached with a key ring and the LED part of the light pulled out on a little string but it was too cheap to work for even an entire night.
Now I just have several in my pocket and if I see someone squinting I either shine it on the book for them or hand it to them as a loan--makes them more likely to return it when you are obviously trying to be of help and they see you face to face.
At one time the bar had a lot of carabiner/LED lights made up with the bar's name on it and they handed them out to regulars. It was a really good and useful idea but if you left yours on the table it would disappear and I only held on to mine for a few weeks. But that is something I would like to look into as a PR gimmick when we are rich.......

I hand out a couple of books to tables that I know need them, singers who don't bring their own disc. I used to hand them all out, but now keep the majority of them on a table near me. The books seem to not get wet and just last longer that way.
I don't use the cheapest pens I can find, but pretty close. They still disappear at a quick rate. I thought about the little LED lights, but figured they would disappear like the pens. I do keep some $.99 Dorcy 2AA battery lights I picked up at Fry's. They are big enough that nobody wants to take them. I change my mic batteries whenever I think they haven't been changed in a while. I then rotate the batteries to my flashlights when they are dead.

Those LEDs will blink for MONTHS on a single battery if you get the right kind. When I was in retail we use to get those for displays... and they took forever to die. They were cheap as anything... I've just never seen them available commercially before.

Are we talking little beacons for book locating or little lights for book reading?

Little beacons for book locating. I already have a lighted magnifying glass.

I bought this light at walmart for 5 bucks (same exact light but no snuggie), not for karaoke books but it could be used. If they didn't close the light when they finished, batteries would die pretty early. Not a good option in my opinion but something to get an idea from.
