Aloha from Hawaii! Tonight we had 15 different Michael Jackson song requests and had the busiest monday night in 4 years!!
It seems that people from all over the world, including a 25 people wedding party from England, 9 Aussies on vacation, a huge birthday party from Japan, and another local birthday party all wanted to sing Michael Jackson songs to honor the memory of him.
Our show was 5 hours long and tonite only we allowed "repeats" of songs and no one seemed to mind, but rather sang along to every single song. At one point i turned down the mics since everyone was singing! The dancefloor was packed all night and we had several moonwalkers, sidewalkers, crotchgrabbers, etc.. hilarious!
Despite the haters and naysayers, there's NO DOUBT of MJ's talent appeal and the contributions to the world of music and to raising awareness to poverty striken third world countries of the world. It was VERY awesome to see all these people who don't know each other, or the japanese who have extremely limited English, get along like best friends and hug and dance with each other ALL night long! WHAT a sight!
I personally AM a big fan of MJ as his music has been around my whole life, kinda like a soundtrack to my life, all through school and adulthood. I was fortunate enough to have seen 3 of his concerts over the years, and watch him sing "Heal The World" at The White House in DC on stage.
Just as Elvis Presley has personal problems, drama, medical issues, etc, i believe Michael Jackson will be eventually remembered NOT for allegations or for those eccentricities, but for his musical legacy and inspiration to dance, just like Elvis is.
I just wanted to acknowledge a great entertainer, dancer, and humanitarian. I didn't know him personally so i'm not qualified to judge anything OTHER than what i've seen or heard with my own eyes; his incredible talent.
His funeral today is going to be the most watched memorial in modern day HIStory, as was Princess Dianas' and Elvis' in their time. There's no denying his incredible success at appealing to nearly all cultures, colors, and types of people.
I ASK as OP that if you don't have anything nice to contribute to this post, to please not reply at all. Keep this thread positive and add any positive contributions that Michael Jackson may have added to your life. Thank You. Mahalo and Aloha! J.R.

Yes I also run a 6 hour show 4 nights a week, and the requests for his music has been incredible. I am not a huge fan of his, however I did grow up on his music. I do respect him for his music for sure. I also allow my customers to sing what they want and if there are dupes. I have no problem with that. Some hosts only allow people to sing the song once. I don't know, I look at it this way, the customers pay my wage and if they want to sing a song thats already been sung I don't care to tell them no

It depends. For Michael, since his death, I've allowed the dupes.
I do have a 2 "Picture" requests a night limit, however, and that rule is unbreakable... .

Nope one song a night - first come first serve. There was a time, but got tired of the "Hey I can do it better" attitude. Put it in earlier tomorrow then! Only possible exceptions - 2 hour wait between the songs & the original singer is gone.

Yeah, Lonman, you are correct. Nothing torks me more that some smart a$$ putting in a song because they think they can do it better. The answer is always, "absolutely not!"
If the bar was empty, and it was early in the night when the song was done, I might make an exception... unless the song is "Picture."

I got off work early so watched the memorial. Wow, very emotional and moving. Especially when his 11 yr old daughter Paris took the mic at the end. If you watched and and weren't moved in someway, I don't know what to say.

Well no way would I take off work to watch it. That in itself is rediculous IMO - I mean geez he wasn't family or friends, he was a person who made music - sad yes, but my gawd! That's what a VCR/DVD/TiVo recorder are for. I know people that are taking today off - the entire day for sick leave to watch this.

Can you imagine the nerve of ABC, pre-empting One Life to Live? Oh man, what is more real I ask.

I guess All My Children was preempted too.... I won't find out until I get home on Thursday).
I heard that he was brought out in a 24K Gold Coffin.... Was this a Memorial/Funeral or a Show???
At least 1 positive thing I can say... Rev Al showed up to pay his respects... That's 1 day that NY doesn't have to deal with him.

I found it touching and real. As a dad of 2 girl 11 and 13 I completely went to tears at the end When Paris got up and talked about how much she missed her daddy.

The real talent and the ones that were the best were those that left their marks with classics that transcended all genres and times. They did not use hyped up crap that insult to the people that made this industry out of the back seat of sedans and getting killed in small planes in snowstorms.
Roy Acuff had several degrees in music and formed Acuff Rose Productions. Many of the cd's you play has credits to this company. This is only a small example of the many sacrifices and real deads that allowed him and others to get rich off the rest of us with smooth hyped up media crap.
Thats all it was A hyped up media crap that elects presidents now In other words if you have the money then you are the best. I considered that production a direct insult to the real artists that are gone. He even departed and left a bad taste in my mouth.

I admit that was probably the most touching part - that did hit me a bit as well. The Brooke Shields speech also hit me a bit.

No different than when Elvis died.

Michael Jackson was more than a singer or performer. He was a true artist because he touched the hearts of so many people, across all racial and language lines... Only the greatest one can do that, because they literally put a real part of themselves into their art. While we didn't know him on a personal level, if you heard his music, you knew his heart. With his words and music he tried to make people see something better in themselves. Its understandable why people would feel a very real painful loss of such a thing.

I didn't get off work early so that I could watch the memorial. I just happened to get off work early and when I got home it was on. I couldn't pull myself away however since I grew up with him, loved the J5 stuff and his 80'sstuff.

Let's not forget what a great humanitarian he was. He gave away millions, raised millions, visited sick kids and vets and also is giving 20% of his estate away.
Paris at the end was a real tear jerker. Brooke, Marlon, Usher, Jermaine all made it tough. It was apparant that Mariah struggled a bit at the very start.
This was a memorial, not a funeral. It was put together very well, was not cmmercialized in my opinion and showed us the person behind the mask, not the celebrity. I thought it was a very classy memorial, the only problem was that there were many others that could have easily spoken, but the time frame was probably good.
A person in my hometown won a ticket, decided not to go because of the cost of an airline ticket and was lambasted by people in the community as he took up a seat that someone could have had. He for sure has a good souvenier.
Having said that, he will go down as one of the greatest entertainers of all time.
