By the way Sunny...there are 2 other Karaoke contest posts I did that go with this one..Look for "KARAOKE CONTESTS scoring etc and KARAOKE CONTESTS-repeat songs etc) .as well as the original one that a poster called King Turi posted- it's called "Looking for opinions" that is the thread that got all the others started. I never realised there was so much interest in the subject though. Nice to know you liked it! :D

 Thanks Kameragurl...I just hope it helps you...Laughlin is a terrific contest. Even if you by chance didn't win your regionals...it's worth it to "self sponsor" and go to the finals. You'll have BLAST and- you'll also see up close the best karaoke singers in the world. Until you've been there and watched how serious these people are about it all- it's really hard to understand how to prepare for it. Talentquest is the biggest contest I've seen- and as far as "karaoke contests" go...it is in another LEAGUE! Most of the winners are pro's and even if they aren't technically "professional" then they are "pro quality". It's an eye opening experience for anyone.

I went in there all cocky the first year--took one day for me to completely change that attitude! I went to hobby shops - bought everything that could possibly help me- feathers rhinestones etc...and spent the entire week fixing up the plain clothes I'd brought to be "costumes" I also worked my tail off doing choreography. I wasn'y ready to have 4 songs and 4 outfits- so I crammed a LOT of work into a short time! I've never seen karaoke done quite so well and I have to admit- pro though I may be- they can be DAMN INTIMIDATING! These singers reminded me there is a LOT more to a "performance" than just singing the notes. I was embarrassed when I realized how lazy I had gotten.

If it can light a fire like that under someone like me who sings all the time for a living...I can't imagine that it would be anything less than inspirational for anyone with little or no experience. Even if you aren't a singer(or have a friend or relative whi isn't) ..the talent alone is like a concert. One of my little proteges has a aunt that goes every year just to listen. So again...if you don't win your regional- I'd strongly suggest going anyway. It's also a really good deal. I haven't been in a few years- but last time I was there is was 300 to enter and that also covered the hotel room. I rented a car and bought a huge cooler with fruit yogurt etc. The hotel also allows you to rent appliances like microvaves and mini refrigerators for something cheap like 10.00 for the week. If you don't eat out every night- you can go, enter the contest as a self sponsor, pay your travel expenses and have the room for the entire week for less than 800.00 for a week. THAT'S darn good deal. If you want a relative or friend to go- then you'd porbably be adding less then 100 total to the trip- So if you split expenses that's 400- 500 a piece. They have a beautiful pool and hot tub. The caboose lounge has karaoke going all day and night in the lounge area. There is also a casino...plus you're right on the colorado river which is unbelieveably GORGEOUS! And there are lots of other hotels/casinos around. it's like a less expensive smaller Vegas! The chippendale dancers and 'thunder from down under" are also usually there-- if that's your thing... hum-in- Nah... hum-i-NAH! :brows: :brows:

Some additional expenses to consider- they usually have a videographer filming the contest. When I was there is was 25.00 per song to get your performances. Dunno what the rates are now- but I think they are in the same range. I can't stress what a help it is to be able to see your performance as the judges would. I would also reccommend getting the top 5 in whatever category you compete in. if you win you'll want to have it...if you don't it's a great thing to compare your performances to the winning ones so you can see where you can improve. ( I heard they offer the top 5 videos for a package deal of 25.00) Again..not just for you Kameragurl, but for anyone thinking of entering a national or international contest...OR if you just want to see how to "up your game" for a local competition. This is a terrific learning opportunity. And you also have some SERIOUS bragging rights if you do win! Oh yeah! :dancin:

I don't have big big bucks to be super duper fancy shmancy. But I do have a nice long dress and shoes. I am almost ready for the event but now I need to tighten up and get finished. I just need to time a couple or so of songs to see if they won't go over the time limit.

Thank you again. :D

Hit the local thrift stores in your area - there is an abundance of great costuming material. I did musical theater for years and built up an amazing wardrobe of costumes and accessories that way.

Tanks for the tip. I don't like to wear a "costume." I just like to look real nice without breaking the bank.

I think Karens tip would also apply to "nice outfits" One of the girls I'm teaching is in the finals at Laughlin and she got some seriously gorgeous evening gowns and dressy pantsuits from the thridt store for less than 15 bucks! Juts remember Kameragurl- you'll need at least THREE songs and outfits to compete if you makes it to Laughlin. Don't let it sneak up on you. There are 2 songs you will DEFINITELY need to do as preliminarys during the week. If you make it to the top 20 you need a THIRD song. If you get to the top 5- you acn either do a new song or they allow you to repeat one of your old ones. But they will NOT allow repeats for the first 3 songs. Thrift stores are a great thing! You should check them out!

Thank you. I already have a nice outfit for this weekend. The letter we got is that we have to dress like we're walking down the red carpet. So, I'm good to go.

KameraGurl, how did you do?

Also, I was the KJ that ran the show, that day. I always love to hear good talent, and more than that, love to get the best sound I can. How did you like the sound?

Hmm. Your hair in the picture here is much shorter then it was that day.

Your highs needed to be cut back just a little. Otherwise the sound was ok.

Thanks for the input. There's always room for improvement. What song did you sing?

As for my picture? Yep I need a new one. That was twenty-five pounds and a whole lot of hair agoo. LOL

There are too many comments for me to make here, being the nice person that I am. Myself and many other people had the same comments. The judges were fair to the contestants with the exception of 1. During the group discussion, we were all advised as to what to do and what not to do; what words we couldn't sing. I will say that someone made it through when a certain word was sung in a song, and that person made it. The rest of the story about what happened that night I'd rather not mention. My scores were very good though. There were alot of very good singers and I was surprised that nobody did the same songs as another one. That was great. I had a really good time.

somebody dropped an F-bomb? In a contest???

hmmm...they'd be cut at Laughlin if they tried to do that.

Are you thinking about self sponsoring?

BTW- that was a VERY ladylikeway of expressing yourself!

Thanks for being diplomatic. That ROCKS! Contests can be fun, but so often the politics and emotions are so thick that you can't breathe without worrying about upsetting someone. I see more of that at the club level than at Regionals, though. In fact, that is one of the reasons I chose to participate in the way that I did, rather than as one of the singers. All in all, I didn't see any of that all day, but I spent most of my day in that corner with my equipment.

I do know that some of the people from the club where I regularly KJ, thought they should have done better, but as much as I love my regulars, a few of them weren't at the top of their game. We all have our days, and I was cheering for EVERYONE, from everywhere--no favorites.

I must have missed the language issue, somewhere, but I was listening more to the mix than the content or the words. I know some of the judges, personally, and am surprised that something like that slipped by them.

If there is anything I did (or didn't do) feel free to PM me, or even call me out, here. I promise that I'll take it all as constructive, and even thank you for your time. :-)

Regardless, thanks for sharing your views, and doing so diplomatically. I REALLY admire your character. :-)
