After I recover from my heart attack, I say thank you very much.

Personally, I don't drink alcohol on the job, whether it's karaoke or solo performance or the band. I'm not able to give my best performance if I'm imbibing, so I don't.

To me, though, it's the the thought that counts. If you were to offer me a round at a gig, you'd get: "Thank you so much for offering, but I can't drink alcohol on the job and I get soft drinks for free here. You've made my day just by letting me know you're thinking of me though! Not many people do that!"

Tips: If you want to hand me money because I entertain you, I'll gladly accept it. If you want to bribe me to alter the rotation, I'll give it right back to you.

Right On! :hi5:

Listen for the amount of times someone is going to hand me a $50 to be bumped
If one of the REGULARS at my show had a problem of waiting an additional 4 minutes to sing.. You could have them. I doubt any of the regulars would have a problem. We are talking about a $50-$100 BRIBE not $10 or $20 which happens all TOOOOOO often ...those I do not consider !!!! What do I look like LOL

George Bernard Shaw once found himself at a dinner party, seated beside an attractive woman. "Madam," he asked, "would you go to bed with me for a thousand pounds?" The woman blushed and rather indignantly shook her head.

"For ten thousand pounds?" he asked. "No. I would not." "Then how about fifty thousand pounds?" he continued.

The colossal sum gave the woman pause, and after further reflection, she coyly replied: "Perhaps." "And if I were to offer you five pounds?" Shaw asked.

"Mr. Shaw!" the woman exclaimed. "What do you take me for!" "We have already established what you are," Shaw calmly replied. "Now we are merely haggling over the price."

We get free drinks when we host but usually don't have more than one alcoholic one per night. But if someone were to offer to buy one for us it would still be appreciated as a nice gesture. In fact it would warm my heart greatly. If we couldn't drink it right then (maybe too close to driving home time), the bar tendress would give us a soft drink so we would have something to thank the customer for and then a token so we could enjoy the drink at a later date. That way it also adds a bit to how much we took in and anything that adds to our bottom line is appreciated also.

We once got a $50 tip but it was sort of an all inclusive for the year thank you and not a bribe so we expressed gratitude and took it.

Guess it's all on how important one person may be. If I lost one person because I bumped someone for cash, that is one too many in my eyes because chances are the money giver isn't going to stay as a reg. I've turned down $100 bills in my face.

If someone were THAT stupid to pay $10k to be up next, sure I would take & give a couple hundred to everyone in the bar or at least the in the rotation that he bumped into. But since you are giving unrealistic hypotheticals that would never actuall happen in reality, guess I am safe!

I am not telling you anything. I'm quoting George Bernard Shaw and I think it is instructive.

I would call the police. Either the person escaped from a mental ward or the money is counterfeit.

LMAO

From my memory, which isn't great LMAO when I was given large tips, $50. $100, it wasn't to bump someone up in rotation. I know I have turned down $20 tips to bump someone up though.

I've had patrons pay me an extra $50 to stay later and still won't change my rotation. I explain my terms before I even take the money. If it's a problem I won't do it. It isn't worth ruining my reputation by giving special treatment to a select few while ignoring everyone else. Having 50 people in a bar and only allowing 3 to sing for an hour is rediculous. It's like turning down a big tip for screwing with the rotation in my mind.

didn't know my post was still alive and kickin! :)

I play at a restaurant with a big bar. Start out the show, just me singing with my guitar and some backing tracks. This goes on for about 2 hours, followed by 2 hours of Karaoke.

Most of the big tippers are tipping before Karaoke just saying how much they enjoyed the solo music. Thank god for rich old people!

The big tippers who tip for Karaoke are generally parents with younger children who are allowed to sing at my show - apparently young kids are not allowed to sing at other shows. Some of them have excellent trained voices and would even do me to shame.

I especially encourage the younger kids to get up and sing because I think this really helps build self esteem and confidence. It worked for me when I was younger.

Sorry to stray from the original topic all, I just felt like I had to say something.

Hello All,

my other job is a professional magician. My policy USED to be never take a tip. Now, I do and simply say it is not necessary, but thank you.

I've been tipped at Karaok too. I always accept it and say thank you.

It is very VERY clear that I will never take a bribe to put up a singer sooner.

There is one exception, and this happens ONLY with the bars approval.

If it is the end of my shift, and people still want to sing, I WILL pass the hat to get guests to keep me to stay. I don't expect the bar to pay me extra, but my shift is over and I do expect to be remunerated for that. The night has ended, so the songs are done. If you still want to sing, it's a NEW ROTATION where ONLY the people who particpate get to sing.

You just bring up the money witht your slip and we start the first song.

I don't make a big deal about the what amout they give even if it's a buck. You'd be surprised what you can make for 30 minutes extra. Sometimes I'll announce that the songs are in MONETARY DONATION order ... sometimes not, it depends on my mood. Dueling Piano players do this all the time.

I'm really staying because I want to (and sometimes I will stay w/out passing the hat) but if it becomes to frequent, then they EXPECT it.

Jason

I work hard at what I do... harder than most other KJ's in the area.

I put out a tip jar and I am not embarassed about doing so.

Just as singers know that I won't ruin their experience if they don't tip me they also know I won't play favorites with people who do

We provide a service. Thus the title "KJ Service". It is customary to tip service providers. I always tip the KJ well when I go out on my off nights given they have done a good job. How do we know if the KJ is the company owner or an employee of the company making $50 a night. I always tip when I leave because I always hate the tipper that places his $1.00 in your jar in slow motion or together with his sign up slip to make sure that you see his attempt for special treatment. We work hard and are the reason the bartenders and servers are making a ton of money. If we weren't there it would be crickets and a few bar flies.

I have FAQ's on the cover of my book and one of them is "How much will it cost me to sing next?" The answer to this question is $10,000.00. Sound rediculous? So does your request to sing next.

I've had people come up inquiring when they are up and when I tell them they are still 10 songs away they say "but I tipped you 5 bucks" which my response is reaching into my tip jar, handing then back there 5 and saying "this is tip jar not a bribe jar. I don't negotiate for rotation spots". Most put it back but some don't and honestly I don't care either way.
