Let's say for arguments sake you legally purchased SOUND CHOICE Foundations and all bricks. Now you take those CDG's and "rip" them to a digital media format like MP3+G and now have them on your computer hardrive.
I would "guess" that most KJ's keep MORE than 1 copy of this library. ( for arguments sake we are talking about a (1) KJ karaoke company not a multi rigged )
I know I keep a back up "just in case" something with the one drive goes wrong.
To be totally honest I have a complete copy on 2 extermal Hardrives PLUS my home computer.
Keeping copies like this is the NORM ???? or is it considered Illegal and could I be subject to FINES or IMPRISONMENT ?

I have my disks, but due to the ripping time involved, I have a backup hardrive that only includes my music, both karaoke and DJ. I something ever happened to my laptop I could be back in business the next day simply by cutting and pasting the tracks on the new laptop.
I could also go disk based if I needed to, but I have no disk numbers in my books, and haven't for over a year. I also have downloaded tracks from Karaoke Version, SBI, and Tricerasoft that weren't disc based to begin with. Without backups I would loose those tracks completely.
When I went computer last year, it took me a month to rip to my harddrive! That's not a task I wish to repeat!!

After years of working in dives, putting up with drunks, trying to promote and infant industry which by the way I received no help from the folks I bought from, this is the aftermath of paying for the foundation and bricks. I present 2 photos. I call them junk1 and junk2.
This represents almost a decade of blood sweat sacrifice and tears. They can put it where the sun doesnt shine.
The 2 white bags on top are instant nonfat dry milk which I get from the food bank.

I,have a laptop, A tower with hard drive and a spare hard drive with backup for a 14k karaoke library and a 10k DJ library. I'm gonna go fly my chopper.
My new host and I went out to scout some prospective bars last night. While we were waiting we played some Texas Holdem. The owner of the bar was sitting at the end and all of a sudden cops were busting him for snorting coke on the bar. I looked at TJ and said well I think we can cross this bar off the list.

I only have one hard drive the rest is at home on my computer. I've been thinking of making a back up to carry with me, but just haven't done it yet. I like having backup everything just in case something goes wrong. I'd dread having to rip all my CDGs again. What a huge huge headache that was !

exactly.
I have my karaoke library on one hard drive, and it's backed up on another. One not in use. It's there if I have to use it, just like the discs.

I actually have 3 hard drives. One I use on a regular basis. The next is my backup that I carry with me in case something goes wrong. The third is never used and stays at home as a backup to the backup, so to speak. who knows? My van and equipment could be destroyed in an accident or something along those lines. Without the backup to the backup, I would be toast. It's kind of like the royal family. all 3 never travel together in the same vehicle. I must stress that only ONE is ever used at a time (really only my main drive as the backup is just that - a backup).
I had a drive crap out on me once. Lost everything on it and hours and hours of work. Second time I had a drive crap out I had a backup, but boy! was I nervous using it! Kept praying it wouldn't crap out too. Now I will feel secure and not worry if I have one crap out on me. I'll just carry on as usual and will buy a new drive the next day.

I ripped my CDs to a hard drive and fortunately backed up the drive.
My primary drive got damaged and ruined, and due to the back up I do not have to go back through the major time burn of ripping the CDs again. It fell out of the back of my truck onto the road when i was driving, due to a failure to secure my truck tailgate.
I bought a second hard drive as a new backup as soon as I started using the former backup.
I know of another KJ who had his hard drive stolen, and he did not have a backup. He had to stop his weekly show for a couple months before he had them all re-ripped into his computer.

I also keep 2 copies of my ripped music.
Prior to having a second backup copy and 2 1/2 months into the ripping "process" I had a harddrive failure, had to start all over from scratch. Ever since that I have maintained a second copy.

I am in the process of transferring my CD+Gs to MP3+Gs myself (BTW, any one recommend a good GD+G to MP3+G /.zip ripper?) but I have had my DJ MP3s on HDD for a while now.
I keep the primary HDD as well as a back-up to divert any major issues if the HDD goes terminal mid show.
I do keep an additional spare in the form of a drive image housed on my home machine. Should the primary get corrupted or need to be replaced, I am able to restore the data from the image in a fraction of the time it would take to copy from one to the other.

Power CD+G Burner.
Hands down the best $39 USD you'll ever spend.
Not only does it rip your discs, but your discs are listed in the freedb database, then it will name your files correctly for you too. A real time saver!

Running 2 rigs. 3 Hard drives.
1 HD with rig 1 songs only
1 HD with rig 2 songs only
1 HD with rig 1 and rig 2 songs (for nights when I only have one show)
One backup HD at home with rig 1 & 2 songs
CD case with 800 capacity for rig1 (HD matches discs)
CD case with 800 capacity for rig2 (HD matches discs)
If I were ever served with a warrant they can verify the tracks on the HD in use at the time match up to the CDs and receipts for all downloaded songs (currently not backed up - need to do that some day!)
I think I'll actually start saving the email receipts in the same folder as the DL file on each rig, that way it's both backed up and instantly verifiable.
My software is set up that I tell it which rig's music I have available so even if I were forced to use the dual rig HD temporarily on a two show night, it would only let me select the appropriate songs from the database.
I also maintain a complete play history of each track played and this could be cross referenced back to the rig as needed.
Finally I plan to make an emergency set of CDs for each rig with maybe 1000 of the most popular songs available on that rig. In the event of a complete computer crash (it has happened) the show will go on!
I have lots of data (evidence if you will) to back up my claims of one to one ratio. I'll probably never need it!
