Give a look/listen to the Peavey PR10 and PR12 speakers. For the last 22 plus years, I designed and built my own speakers, to get the accuracy and clean sound I desire, but three years ago, I bought a pair of PR10s and have been happy ever since. I have been QUITE happy with the sound of f my PR10s, and that is from someone who is ABSOLUTELY anal about accurate, clean sound.

They are available both powered and passive. Passive PR10s can be had for less than $150each, and much less, if you shop around.

For one vs two speakers, I am a purist and prefer to tun in stereo, what is recorded in stereo. For sound level and tone quality, one speaker would be fine, but you do miss some of the details in the much when you run in mono. There may be some who would argue that point with me, but they simply are not as critical of the sound as I am.

Micky - that's a nice system I'm sure

$600 passive speakers + $300 power amp + $300 passive mixer = $1,200 brand new
This is way, way, way over my budget.

Through this forum, now that I had discovered studio monitors (suitable for future recording if I wanted to), I was thinking $200 power monitors + $100 passive mixer = $300 (quality used equipments via eBay).

This is the price range I'm comfortable with!!! Thanks for clearing up the ONE vs. TWO speakers system.

This is almost hysterical. I'm sorry I don't normally call people out directly on their equipment recommendations (we've all got our opinions and I try to keep that in mind) but to claim that the budget line of a budget manufacturer are somehow absolutely accurate and clean is beyond laughable.

I've seen the PR10's and PR12's in action and have even had the opportunity to play with them a bit. They are exactly what you'd expect to get for the price. They sound ok. However, they're in a very light weight molded enclosure so the first thing you notice is they bleed sound out the back and sides horribly, worse than either of the first two generations of the JBL EONs which were horrible for this as well. These cabinets also introduce a great deal of distortion in the low and sub-low frequency ranges.

The other painfully obvious weakness with these speakers is the lack of quality in the passive crossover. Frequency response around the crossover point is completely out of control and if one is not versed in correcting for this on the EQ the results with the PR series can be horrible.

One other notable weakness is the reproduction of bass frequencies below about 80Hz. The woofers in the PR series are Peavey's cheapest line and it shows when you ask them to perform anywhere near the Sub-low range. As the woofers get close to their excursion limits, the harmonic distortion they generate becomes pretty audible.

In a roomthat one can benefit from stereo reproduction (especially in a home situation with a small room), i'm all for it. In most 'club' situations, it's a waste IMO.

Guitar Center sells a 15" Harbinger powered speaker for $249.00. Allthough these are a little large, they have a very nice appearence, are light weight, and they sound awsome in the the house.
They are often on sell for $199.00, so look for the sell.
You can use these with either a powered mixer, or not.

O.P.

Here's what you do ---Get yourself a powered mixer from BEHRINGER like this one
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/na ... 7c0&rpp=20

I used the same one professionally but traded it up for YAMAHA EMX512 for added powere and built in compression. THe BEHRINGER IS A GREAT MIXER

Then pick up a couple of very liteweight speakers frim Behringer like these:
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... sku=501603

I also have used these for small venues and they will fit your needs perfectly

THE ENTIRE SYSTEM WILL COST YOU $600 AND you will have more than you need for a home system
